“Do you have the patience to wait

Till your mud settles and the water is clear?

Can you remain unmoving

Till the right action arises by itself?”

I'm becoming increasingly mindful of the need to temper feelings of impatience and anger in my life. Disruption and disappointment are all part of the human experience. Not much we can do about it. I'm sorry, But developing coping skills is definitely within our means. I find myself continually sucking up news feeds like a vacuum cleaner. It's yet another compulsion (like watching YouTube videos) that has been enabled by technology. and is fueled by the accessibility of the tablet. The irony is the more I read (or watch), the shorter my attention span gets. The "what's next?" mentality guides my every click. Quite often this leads to frustration, particularly when I get consumed by rampant political discourse that is based on the relentless pursuit of power at the expense of any meaningful benefit to the general population. Nothing wrong with keeping informed. But I'm finding it extremely therapeutic to modulate the amount of coverage to which I expose myself. The collective anger and frustration of the nation will lead you down a rathole if you let it.

The day after the solar eclipse I found myself with model Jill at the site of a controlled burn of ornamental grass. It's burned off each spring to make way for new growth. A wonderful metaphor for regeneration through destruction. And a strong echo of the eclipse which represented themes of beginnings and endings. Beyond all of that, it's an opportunity for dramatic portraits. But the scenes that result exist only for the duration of the flames which is mere seconds. As is often the case, the entire session boiled down to just a single frame.

This little old man impressed me with his strength and grace across the water... he caught up with our motorized boat!

You can see his pets onboard his boat, there are 4 of them, and you can see a basket full of fish in the middle :)

Explored on flickr #267, thank you my friends for your visits and comments :)

Finally managed some nicer photos. They turned into a (rather dull) photostory, too.

The full thing in my blog.

Minimal architecture

Lissett Airfield, 10m SW of Bridlington on the East Yorkshire coast was the nearest Bomber Command station to Germany. It was built in 1942 and home to the 1,800 personnel of RAF158 Squadron for the duration. The Memorial depicts the seven crew members of a Halifax 4-engined aircraft. Each figure supports the other reinforcing the Squadron motto 'Strength in Unity' and the sculpture is inscribed with the names of every one of the 851 members of 158 who gave their lives for our freedom today. Santa Fe Railway Depot

Strong City, Kansas

From the Emporia Gazette:

"The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Depot in Strong City was built in 1913 for a cost of $20,000. It included two passenger waiting rooms, a ticket office, telegrapher’s area, main office, and baggage room. The west end was used as a freight office.

The depot closed in 1938 and for the last 70 years has served as Santa Fe offices and railroad storage. After several years of negotiation, BNSF donated the building to Strong City in 2006. In 2007, the depot was listed on the National Register of Historical Places, and plans to restore it started in earnest."

Hi everyone!! Determined not to let another weekend slip away without getting back to flickr, I'm finally posting a trio of shots (Strength, Solace, Power :-) from last year's trip west with the kid. This week I'm coming to see all of you! I've missed you, big time! : )

Session at Praia do Bessa. Freddy demonstrated his strength being able to hold his body.

. . . Saw a female Snowy Owl resting on the north side of a building, out of the wind, and giving me the proverbial "stink eye"! She seems to like this spot, as I believe this is the same bird that was spotted here many times last winter.

Have a great week Facebook, Flickr, and 500px friends!

Several beech trees have grown so close they are merging into one.

Le contraste entre le fond noir et cette luminosité de coucher de soleil est beau ! Je voulais prendre ce moment en photo.

Great view but a perilous home. The strength of spider's webbing never fails to amaze me. To survive in such an exposed area is quite a feat as the pedestrian bridge has no walls to block wind or rain, only these narrow struts to build upon.

"Get yourself in the midst of an encounter: shoot a picture with people, rather than of people." - Tiffany Jones

-------------------------

I get a completely different reaction from strangers when I'm dressed casually versus being dressed formally in a suit for work. Today, since I was out sick, I happened to be dressed rather casually (corduroys and a sweater, mind you, not Sean John's and Timberlands), and I wandered into a bookstore (location withheld because I'm a classy cat) while out grabbing lunch. The expression you see on this guys' face? That's the look he gave me the whole time I was there, from the minute he looked up from his own book to greet me.

I wound up choosing the two books on the counter, Gordon Parks' Half Past Autumn and a Japanese dictionary. I used my debit card to pay. Now, a customer before me had just used her debit card, and his machine worked fine. But when it was my turn, he had to "make a call first."

That's when I shot him. With my camera. :)

Stroll in the lunchtime sunshine led to Joe having to show off. Must be like how an Ant has a high size to strength ratio....

Didn't get out to look for poppies this year, fortunately I have my archives to look through for some
