May 2016 CreativeMornings/Raleigh event (global theme: Reality) with guest speaker Jedidiah Gant.
Jedidiah Gant is a Digital Urbanist living in Downtown Raleigh, NC. He is currently involved in several projects focused on media strategy, creative urbanism and community engagement for New Raleigh and Myriad Media.
Jed comes from a design background, receiving a Bachelor of Architecture from UNC-Charlotte in 2003. Afterwards, he moved to London to work for Dutch firm Erick van Egeraat Architects. After working on design projects in Russia, the Netherlands, Spain and England, he moved to Raleigh to work for Clearscapes, an art and architecture firm based in Downtown. At Clearscapes, Jed helped design residential buildings, art centers and other projects across North Carolina, including being the lead designer of the Shimmer Wall on Raleigh’s Convention Center.
In 2007, he helped start the Raleigh-based news site, New Raleigh. After co-running the site for 5 years, the project began focusing on sharing information on other new media platforms. The brand has continued to grow and move from standard news articles, to opinion, urban strategy and community conversation.
Other urban-based projects started by Jed include the Cooke Street Carnival community street festival and urban-art catalyst Raleigh Murals Project. Serving as a member of the Raleigh Appearance Commission for the past 5 years, Jed has helped give advice for upcoming urban projects in Raleigh. As well, he has been a lead organizer for the yearly Sir Walter Raleigh Awards, which is now part of Hopscotch Design Festival for a second straight year. And, a few more projects are also in the works for the streets of Raleigh.
He is interested in the intersection of technology and communities, developing his Master’s New Media thesis on how Raleigh could use design thinking to create a Hybrid Media Infrastructure to improve and increased urban engagement by citizens.
Including his urban initiatives, Jed currently works with Myriad Media in Downtown Raleigh, doing media strategy for the firm as well as clients including the IBM Corporate Citizenship programs Smarter Cities Challenge and World Community Grid.
Special thanks to our host CAM Raleigh and sponsors CompostNow, Remedy, for video production, Counter Culture Coffee, who generously provided us with complimentary coffee, and Raleigh Raw, who provided the raw, organic, and cold pressed juices.

Well, it's been really super busy lately and I have just begun to work on the plans for my next Alaskan vacation - fast and furious. Want to get the necessities completed ... so that I can relax a bit. One of the adventures that must be planned, since they involve flights, etc. are the bear adventures.
Each year, we have flown over to Katmai NP & Preserve for some quality bear viewing and, of course, photography. It's always a highlight for us. It's hard to describe the closeness that I feel when I'm around these magnificent creatures. Now, their size, strength, and quickness should instill an element of uncertainty when we're in their environment, but in reality, nothing could be farther from the truth. It's like time stops .... cares go away, as do any other competing thoughts .... it's just us, our guide, and the bears. A sense of calm invades my body & mind and I delight in their presence. Much like a runner gets that "runner's high", Tom & I get a "bear high", if you will. They are so fascinating and the sense of being so secluded with them - in their world, as a non-threatening visitor, is very real and very welcomed.
This image is from last year, where we spent time with the bears at Kuliak Bay. It was such a thrill to photograph them as they chased down the salmon, or should I say, their dinner. What a rush at times, as they seemed to be running directly at us, though we knew that we weren't the object of their pursuit. Still, your heart would accelerate as they neared.
This upcoming year, we're planning to spend some time with the bears in Katmai NP, but also we thought that we would visit Lake Clark NP. That will be a first for us - every trip to AK must have something new. :-) As they say ... variety is the spice of life! Of course, we will also surely get bear interaction and images from Denali NP and areas on the Kenai ... can't forget those. All in all our side trips are planned, our Denali time is set, but of course, there's lots of time to follow the spirit of the moment. Always exciting, always an adventure, always leaves me thirsty for more.
Thanks so much for stopping by to view and especially for all of your thoughts and comments.

... hot on the heels of my last purchase I picked up this book. I don't like to use strategy guides as they give away too much. It's tough to ignore all the give-aways in this one, but I bought it for the Sinnoh pokedex reference, the battle type charts, and some basic strategy stuff on pokemon that I wanted to make sure I understood.

The interfaith EarthKeepers II Team held a strategy meeting on April 5, 2013 at the Big Bay Point Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast in Big Bay, Michigan to plan the 30 faith community gardens.
EarthKeepers II is an Interfaith Energy Conservation and Community Garden Initiative across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Over the next two years, at least 30 interfaith community gardens will be planted that include vegetables (some fresh produce will be given to food banks) - plus native species plants.
EarthKeepers II has representatives from 10 faith communities involving 250 churches/temples in northern Michigan: Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Jewish, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist, Bahá'í, Unitarian Universalist and Zen Buddhist.
These gardens will serve as a pollinator central for all plants in the area.
Native species plants are pollinator friendly - and that is important as one-third of America's pollinators have died in the past 7 years.
The reasons for the pollinator disappearances (bees, butterflies) are varied but most of which are human related especially a new and deadly pesticide/fertilizer powder that is used to coat seeds.
Humans cannot live without pollinators.
A presentation on native species plants and pollinators was given by U.S. Forest Service Midwest Botanist Jan Schultz.
Schultz is the Head Botanist at the USFS Eastern Region (R-9) Office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and we are fortunate she is the EarthKeepers II Technical Advisor for Community Gardens
EarthKeepers II Project Coordinator Kyra Fillmore Ziomkowski explained the community garden plans at churches and temples across the U.P.
Funded by the EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, EarthKeepers II has a major goal of reducing toxins in the Great Lakes including airborne mercury - through energy conservation audits and grants for churches/temples - and educating their congregations on ways to reduce energy consumption at home - while getting financial incentives to do so.
An EarthKeepers II contractor has completed 17 of the 40 energy audits at churches/temples in the U.P. - and all will be completed by this fall, according to Delta Green Ex. Dir. Doug Russell, Executive Director, EarthKeepers II Energy Conservation Consultant.
Grants of up to $500 (in a few cases more) will be offered to these congregations to help make energy conservations repairs at the houses of worship
Those attending the Big Bay meeting included faith leaders and representatives, project organizers and the EarthKeepers II Student Team from Northern Michigan University.
Attendees included:
Longtime EarthKeeper Rev. Tesshin Paul Lehmberg of the Lake Superior Zendo, a Zen Buddhist temple located at 2222 Longyear Ave, in Marquette, MI.

Strategy-31 is series of civic protests in support of the right to peaceful assembly in Russia guaranteed by Article 31 of the Russian Constitution. Since July 31, 2009, the protests are held in Moscow on Triumfalnaya Square on the 31st of every month with 31 days.
Each of the Strategy-31 actions was dispersed by regular and riot police and accompanied by large-scale detentions of participants and passers-by.
This time I've passed more time rather on the side of riot police tried to understand their "strategy", but finally didnt find there any logic - they just pushed the participants from side to side, then separeted them on 2 groups, then joined them again... After all I asked one police guy what do they want exactly, he just smiled me, winked and run his way... Another one old man I met on the side of participants when we were running together to underground station said me that it reminds him good times of the 1989th! (but still not the 91st or 93th)...
Funny comedy... during all this 21 years...
Moscow. Russia
I strongly recommend you another one great song
