Born a Scorpio, John was naturally drawn to the strategy, heart, and pageantry of software development. At the age of 9, John became a Sagittarius, and with the aid of an Apple IIe, he developed his first game; a poor excuse of a nethack clone where the player's character would randomly die for no discernible reason with a frequency that made the game impossible to tolerate, let alone defeat. To date, no one has remotely enjoyed this game.
Before arriving at kaChing, John was well recognized for his relentless and unambiguous attention to detail while employed by a really, really big company that did some really cool stuff. John credits his parents for the size, speed, toughness, and natural buoyancy that has allowed him to excel at every task that ever had the gumption to get in his way (including reading several books to completion; they're kinda like kindles). John also enjoys foliage and hopes to someday ride on a Zamboni.

The 2nd annual Wildfire Crisis Strategy Camp, a specialized recruiting experience, aims to immerse local high school Juniors in the wildland firefighting culture. Students were selected for the camp based on their application and interview.
During the weekend of April 26-28, 2024, Forest Service staff instructed volunteers about different career paths available in wildland fire. Instructors showed students what a “day in the life of a fire fighter” is like and demonstrated actual firefighting skills such as line construction around a mock fire and cross-cut saw operation. Students learn about many aspects of wildland fire and fire suppression including defensible space, engine operation, handcrew tools and techniques, helitack responsibilities, and smokejumper operations, firefighting tactics, prescribed burn operations, and much more.
Students hear from fire personnel across the Forest about different programs and job opportunities on the first day. They work through building a resume in USAJOBS and how to fill out an application. At the end of the day, they are given handouts with instructions and examples to take home with them. Then they head out to the field for a weekend of camping and hands-on lessons. This year, the students were from Genessee, Moscow, Grangeville, and Cottonwood, Idaho. The goal of the camp is to show local kids all the opportunities that are available to them in the Forest Service, especially the fire organization.
Wildfire Crisis Strategy Camp was an idea developed by Jared Gorham, an engine captain on the Red River District of the Nez Perce/Clearwater National Forest. Gorham attended a similar event when he was in high school, and it provided him the career path he decided to take. Of the five students that attended the camp in 2023, three successfully competed for summer firefighting jobs on the Forest and the nearby Craigmont office of Idaho Department of Lands. The event also got the attention of the Sawtooth National Forest who sent a representative to the camp hoping to replicate it for their forest next year.
