Exit Strategy

Taken in Japan march 2019 still working through files that never got processed and this one seemed worth a go.

Taken during my trip there with Rohan Reilly and Stephen Cairns and what a great trip it was it seems so long ago.

Though it was an exceptionally cold winter and spring, a snowstorm in Mid-may is unheard of here. Unfortunately, a large group of recently-arrived migrating Tree Swallows got caught in the storm and had to hunker down on the tree branches overlooking the Yukon River, and wait it out. I feared the worst would happen during the 24 hour storm, and was worried sick that they would die from exhaustion as a result of their long journey from Central America, a lack of food as there were no flying insects, strong winds and sub-zero temperatures. I returned the next morning and found no dead birds, so presumably most had survived. They seemed to go into a state of semi-torpor (slow metabolism) and huddled (see note) to conserve energy, a strategy that apparently worked.

As surreal as it appears, this shot is pretty much straight out of the camera with a few contrast, vibrance and saturation adjustments in CS5. The green bokeh is courtesy of the deep green colour of the Yukon River in the spring. Eventually, this photo and others, along with the story, attracted significant international media attention. ...on how to overwhelm the guy they just caught

By the 1650s, the line of battle had developed as a tactic that could take advantage of the broadside armament. This method became the heart of naval warfare during the Age of Sail, with navies adopting their strategies and tactics in order to get the most broadside-on fire. Cannon were mounted on multiple decks to maximize broadside effectiveness. Numbers and caliber differed somewhat with preferred tactics.

With a gleaming cinnamon head, Redhead Ducks (Aythya americana) light up the open water of lakes and coastlines. These sociable winter in sometimes-huge flocks where winter numbers can reach the thousands. Summer find them nesting in reedy ponds of the Great Plains and West. Redheads fly faster than most ducks, with a rapid, shallow wingbeat and a flight pattern that’s more erratic than that of the similar-looking Canvasback. You’ll often see these sociable ducks feeding with other ducks Many ducks lay some of their eggs in other birds’ nests (a strategy known as “brood parasitism”), but female Redheads are perhaps the best in this department. Their targets include other Redheads as well as Mallard, Canvasback, Northern Pintail, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Ruddy Duck and the American Wigeon. This beautiful Redhead drake was photographed at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center on South Padre Island, Texas.
