Am Strand von La Conche

The Strand brings back lots of childhood memories for me. Not associated with London though - these memories were of The Strand restaurant in Matlock Bath. I remember as a VERY special treat when I was small I would be taken there for lunch (me! to a "proper" restaurant, not a wimpey!) and it all felt very posh. They made the best tasting cottage pie in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD - at least to an eight year old's tastebuds.

Of course, all this wibble down memory lane has sod all to do with the photograph...

Sunset over Strand, Cape Town a few minutes ago. Hopefully these clouds mean the end of the last week's extreme heat in Cape Town.

This is the Strand south of the Aldwych looking east to St Mary le Strand church. Most of the shops around it have long gone, leaving this part of the Strand looking pretty sterile compared to the lively, bustling street it was in the 1890s.

The image was scanned from a postcard sent in 1898. So far as we can ascertain, it is in the public domain.
