In order to fulfill its contract of delivering and shunting the bitumen tankers for Total UK Ltd at their Preston Riversway terminal, the Ribble Steam Railway have three Rolls Royce 'Sentinel' 4-wheel diesel-hydraulic locomotives at their disposal. On 3 July 2017 Energy (W/No.10226 of 1965) draws six loaded bitumen tankers away from the Strand Road exchange sidings in the rain. The 'Sentinel' was acquired from the Manchester Ship Canal Company in 2004, where it carried running number 'DH23' and is usually held in reserve to the original Port of Preston 'Sentinels', Energy and Progress.

There was this big, ugly red car out front, so I couldn't get a get shot from across the street. It plays first-run movies, though. Cool.

Strand Lane and the entrance to the Roman bath

"Strand Lane is thought to have once been the bed of a stream which ran down from Drury Lane to the Thames. A bridge called Strand Bridge crossed it, and the name was after transferred to the landing stage at the bottom. Waterloo Bridge also was originally called Strand Bridge. The entrance to the Roman page is just to the right of the passage under the old watch-house, and the property belongs to the parish of St. Mary's. Just below the point where the camera stood for this photograph are some steps on the right leading up to Surrey Street."

Nine miles south of Coronado, connected by the fairly narrow Silver Strand, is Imperial Beach and this famous surfer statue. "The Spirit of Imperial Beach," installed in 2009, was paid for by the Port of San Diego’s public art program to honor the history of surfing and sandcastle building at Imperial Beach – the surfer is standing on a sand castle. Per one source, images of Schwarzenegger when he was younger wer used as a model for the surfer’s body. There’s much better pictures of the statue on the first link below.

I read somewhere that the Port paid for the statue as part of an effort to improve the quality of Imperial Beach. The southern portions of San Diego County are on the international border and are much poorer than the areas closet to downtown; Imperial Beach fits with that in having a history of being a rather rough beach community, though having been cleaned up quite a bit in recent years.

Seizing a rare opportunity to take a closer look at this tunnel which is of course full of traffic 364 days of the year but was closed on New Year's Eve. I've always been fond of the tunnel - and if you get the chance it's a lot of fun to cycle through!

Now for a bit of history:

Also known as the Kingsway Underpass, this tunnel links Waterloo Bridge with High Holborn. Opened in 1964 it occupies part of the space of the original Kingsway Tramway Subway, which was in service from 1906 until 1952 when London's tram network was closed down. Much of the rest of the tram subway still lies abandoned, but isn't accessible from this tunnel despite surrounding it.
