Sissy Younger says, "We been strafed by a masked bandit!"

Cyndie Weiser replies, "That cherry pickin' Waxwinger won't hurt you. The Hawker Hurricane will take you up for lunch meat!"

This male Red-winged Blackbird, and several others, were attempting to take on territorial ownership of the pond area! The females have also arrived. Perhaps a half dozen pairs will nest in the nearby community lake area. He likely already has a mate and they will claim a nest site in the cattail marsh surrounding this lake. Both sexes will strafe any invaders of their breeding area turf... including homo sapiens! It's a good site to practice your tracking skills of flying birds!

Another cornertime for Daniela. A naughty sissyboy. What should we do with him?

There were several of this species at this small shallow lake. They didn't seem to be settled in here to nest, but are more likely just passing through, When these birds decide to set up a household here they become very territorial and act much more aggressive. They will strafe any intruders (including me) whom they perceive as invading their turf.

I used to know the date this hangar was built, but somehow that detail escapes me at the moment. Pretty sure it was during WWII. Anyway, here are two T-34C Turbo Mentors assigned to VFA-122 in El Centro's T-34 hangar. These birds are used for range control and safety observation of student pilots learning to dive bomb and strafe in the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

Battle of Belchite was a group of military operations that took place in the Spanish Civil War between August 24 and September 7, 1937 nearby the town of Belchite, in Aragon.

Prelude

Belchite: ruins of the old village

After failed attempts to capture Brunete, the Republican military leadership decided to try a new series of offensives to slow down the Nationalist advance in the north. A new campaign was therefore planned for Aragon. The decision wasn't based on political as well as military considerations, as the government saw it as a way to decrease anarchist and POUM influence in the region by bringing in communist troops and incorporating three anarchist divisions into the newly designated Army of the East under command of general Sebastian Pozas. Another objective of the planned offensive was to take Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, which was only a few kilometers behind enemy lines. Capturing the regional capital offered more than symbolic significance because it was also the communication center of whole Aragon front. The first year of the war in this part of Spain had emphasized that the possession of key town was of far greater importance than the control of wide areas of open countryside. The Nationalists had only three divisions, the 51st, 52nd and 105th, spread across the 300 kilometers of front, with the majority of their troops concentrated in towns. General Pozas and his chief-of-staff Antonio Cordon set up their headquarters in Bujaraloz. Their plan was to break through at seven different points on the central 100-kilometre stretch between Zuera and Belchite. The object of splitting their attacking forces was to divide any Nationalist counter-attack and to offer fewer targets for bombing and strafing than at Brunete.

This male was taking a high lookout in a signpost near the pond and loudly proclaiming his territorial ownership!. This species is pairing up for the coming breeding season. As its factory in Cologne, Ford-Werke Ag produced the V3000 series of medium trucks, so named for being designed to carry 3-ton payload. Much like some Canadian Military pattern trucks produced at Ford Canada, the V3000 was produced in both a Standard two-wheel drive model called the V3000S and an "allrodantrieb" (German All wheel drive) model name V3000A. This Particular Ford V3000S is a troop transport model also appeared in Valkyrie 2008 film. It appeared in a brief scene in which a British fighter -bomber attack German base in North Africa with one aircraft strafing and destroying the truck.

Back onto the road off the water meadows around the now dry Nailbourne, my target was Ickham and across the Stodmarsh towards Grove Ferry. The same route my Mother would have taken in the 1940's to reach Grove Ferry Inn for a dance or a trip down the Stour by boat. However it was this very road that nearly saw the end to my Mother! One day she was cycling to Canterbury Hospital where she was a nursing sister, she heard the rumble of a planes engines and then the rat-at-at-tat of machine guns. Gravel spat up around her on both sides and she braked and froze as a German fighter strafed her and flew off.......

Yesterday (Aug 3) I was dumbfounded to discover a broad-winged hawk and nest in our yard. Several years ago a pair of breeding merlins made a very noisy impression on our neighborhood and frequently circled our tall white pines at breakneck speed, but until recently the soundscape of our yard this pandemic summer has been domninated by the exuberant vocalizations of northern cardinals, house wrens, chipping sparrows, and what I thought was a wood pewee with an unusual call (an extended "wee" not preceded by a detectable "pe"). It was only 2 weeks ago that I detected a raptor in our heavily wooded yard: one day a sustained frenzy of songbird calls and mobbing behavior led me to observe what I thought was a Coopers Hawk, but it never afforded me a good view as it flew away through thick foliage. But yesterday I finally investigated the persistent and atypical wood pewee song, only to discover as I walked toward the sound, that it was not a distant plaintive clear tone but a nearby harsh screech, coming from high overhead. Eventually I discovered the source: a juvenile BW hawk perched overhead near a nest. It glared at me as it repeatedly called -- for whom? Was it a fledged youngster reluctant to leave home, or a precocious nest builder issuing a seduction scream for a potential late-season mate. BW hawks are forest dwellers and aren't often seen soaring in open skies during breeding season, but I've seen others this summer, including one that was chasing and strafing a larger red-tailed hawk high above the Ashuelot River. Too bad the guest pictured here hasn't made a point to clear our yard of chipmunks. The bird was perched in very deep shade, generally hidden behind branches and foliage: taken with a high ISO and processed heavily to lighten the image and reveal plumage pattern.

The depiction of this "gavel stone" (facing brick) in Amsterdam (seen in the Begijnhof) refers to the biblical story of Daniel 3 vs 1-30.

Three Jewish young men should have refused to kneel in front of a statue of the king during the Babylonian captivity and are said to have been thrown into a burning stove as punishment. But they did not burn, because an angel extinguished the flames and led the boys out of the oven. Nebuchadnezzar was so impressed by that miracle so he pardoned the boys.
