Day 5. Thought maybe I should do something more than lay around the lake and play with the fish. So... I went upstairs and fixed my bicycle, rode down and got air in the tires and off I went! It's been more than a year since I've been on a bike and more years than I care to remember the last long ride I've been on.

So off I go, and before I know it, I'm ten miles from home. I stopped at the thrift store and treated myself to six dresses (two just for the silk... I'll cut them up and make other stuff out of them), three dress shirts (not shown), two purses and a pair of red and white spectator pumps. All for less than thirty dollars.

Little did I realize that the ten miles home were slightly uphill and into the wind, and the last mile and a half was steeply uphill.

My legs are still shaking.

A little video from the mac store.

A store in downtown Havana. I really like the setting and the picture of Ché in the background.

Blogged about here: dashausdermaus.blogspot.com .

I guess this country store had several owners. I can't fully make out the name on the Coca Cola sign but the name on the door is different.

I really really like this store. A bit of everything.

This ferry company ran this vessel between Channel Islands but appears to have ceased trading as the boat has been stored in Newhaven for some time

This store window was filled with the cheapest junk imaginable (all Chinese of course). And when I went inside, I found that there were lots of people standing in line to buy it.

Mark Karson's Hollywood liquor store was one of the first post-prohibition liquor stores in Portland.

Oregon was a dry state for a few years before the Volstead act went into effect so the state already had an infrastructure for importing, distilling and distributing bootlegged whiskey since 1916. Nothing changed in Oregon when Prohibition became the law of the country except that the punishment for making and distributing alcohol products became greater. For those with a more discriminating palate and who wanted a higher quality of alcoholic beverages relied on Canadian distillers that smuggled rum and Scotch using boats to bring it to the shores of Oregon. But, less choosy folks who want to save a few bucks eagerly bought the readily available Oregon whiskey known as “white lightning,” served in speakeasies and available by the bottle.

Most illegal stills operated in Central or Eastern Oregon, also known as known as the “Oregon Outback.” One reason that the Oregon outback was so popular for illegal booze making was that it was full of homesteaders who were living off the land. For those fortunate enough to have water on their land claim, they only needed to spend a dollar or two for sugar and yeast to distill a batch of hooch that could earn enough money to pay the bills for two or three months.

June 3, 2011 - Wegmans preview tour (Frederick, MD)

Disclaimer: Wegmans is a member of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce (my employer). However, Wegmans did not pay me to promote their opening. I just had a fun time on the preview tour and wanted to share some photos.

Shelves that were quite empty--but no doubt a place that comes in handy when you need a bottle of El Presidente or can of red beans.
