I had to pull over to get a few pictures of this beast. About 50 miles south of Fallon, Nevada on US-95. By the time I reached the summit of Mount Montgomery at over 7,000 feet the snow was coming down hard. Fortunately, I only had about 10 miles of nasty weather, a hard blowing snow storm. Then as I dropped down into California I was past the worst of it. As difficult as winter driving can be, I love the wildness of these storms, photographically anyway.
Rest Stop a small flock of crows came over and this one decided to stop and rest for a few minutes, shot in North Carolina.

Our area has been avoiding the snow all these weeks. Thinking about all that missed snow, here is a snowy owl. There are two snowy owls on exhibit at ZooAmerica. This is the male, Nash, arrived at ZooAmerica in March of 2019 from the Nashville Zoo. He hatched in June of 2010. The female, Rinna, hatched in captivity at Tallinn Zoo in Estonia. Her hatch date is 2007 and she arrived at ZooAmerica in 2009.Rinna is the larger owl with distinctive black barring while Nash is almost completely white in color with few black markings. i was driving on a dirty road looking for birds when i saw a shape at my right.
i'm used to find owls that are very mimetic and cannot be search easily with a sight.
the best thing to do with all the wild animals is to be used to their shape.
so i stopped the car and i came back...nothing there...but i decided to wait a bit and after a minute ...
peekaboo!!! a curious spotted eagle owl (bubo africanus) rose from behind some rocks.
i really love these birds!!

In late fall I spotted 10-15 Pine Grosbeaks at a local park. This was the only male of the group. The conditions were extremely overcast.

The bar-tailed godwit is a long-billed, long-legged wading bird which visits UK shores for the winter. Most usually seen in its grey-brown winter plumage, birds in spring may show their full rich chestnut breeding plumage. In flight it shows a white patch stretching from the rump up the back, narrowing to a point. It breeds in the Arctic of Scandinavia and Siberia and hundreds of thousands of them pass through the UK, on their way further south, or stop off here for the winter.

After cresting the switchbacks and leaving Ross Lake - the Little Beaver Trail continues relatively flat for miles. We reached a point that opened up and we could see the valley we were making our way through and we stopped for lunch.
