Here’s my “Tiny Protest” with its "Macro” message for this week’s #MacroMonday theme, #OnACoin

The base is a 5 Turkish lira coin from 1974. Diameter of the coin is 32.5 mm. On the coin is a cut-out cork piece, from a wine bottle that was opened on a day with bittersweet memories.

Pinned to the cork piece are a bunch of justice wishes written on rice grains. Rice grains are glued to colorful ball pins. Colorful ball pins represent our beautiful diverse universe, and beautiful things happen if we all stand together for justice and equality.

Thank you for your visit :)) HMM!

MARCHE CONTRE LE RACISME ANTI-ASIATIQUE

www.facebook.com/events/1037788166710375

MARCH AGAINST ANTI-ASIAN RACISM

www.facebook.com/events/1037788166710375

The month of March marks the one-year commemoration of the covid-19 pandemic in Québec. Although hope is on the horizon with strict health prevention measures and the arrival of vaccines, the rise of anti-Asian racism appears to be worsening.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, members of Asian communities in Québec have been physically and verbally assaulted, stabbed, and even hit by cars. Our religious, cultural and commercial artefacts have also been vandalized.

This is in line with what has been happening across North America. Across Canada, members of other Asian communities and Indigenous peoples have also been attacked. Some have been mistaken for being of East Asian descent. Vancouver reported a 717% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes while the SPVM reported a five-fold increase in hate crimes towards asian communities.

As we reel from the reports from Atlanta of the gunman who murdered 6 Asian women yesterday, we are still trying to make sense of the violence in our own communities. Just this week in Montreal, a man of Korean origin was attacked with pepper-spray in broad day light. Let’s not forget the double hit-and-run in Brossard in September, which killed two members of our communities: Huiping Ding (age 45) and GĂ©rard Chong Soon Yuen (age 50).

Asian communities in Québec have had enough. We are taking to the streets on Sunday March 21, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to stand up against anti-Asian racism and all forms of racial discrimination.

***Masks and social distance will be maintained, as well as the option to participate virtually.***

Please join us at 1:00pm at Cabot Square, where we will march to Chinatown to demand effective government action in ending racial discrimination.

In solidarity,

Following the march, Stella, l’amie de Maimie, an organization by and for sex workers, will be hosting a vigil in Chinatown to commemorate the victims of the attack on Asian massage parlors in Atlanta. This will be a moment for affected communities to grieve together in solidarity and to honour the lives of those we’ve lost and to bring attention to the work conditions of Asian sex workers.

This Chinese Takeout container graphic was created to raise awareness about the increased overt racism faced by Asians during these Covid times, including small business owners who've seen additional violence, vandalism and xenophobia due to the Anti-Asian rhetoric. In Chinatowns within the US, the loss of income has sometimes amounted to 90% due to the racism with joblessness at 80% (according to NBC), displacing community members with no where to go. Times are tough for everyone, but please remember and support local businesses, especially when craving that delicious noodle dish or boba :)

MARCHE CONTRE LE RACISME ANTI-ASIATIQUE

www.facebook.com/events/1037788166710375
