Situated on the banks of the River Corrib in Galway city, Galway Cathedral is the most recently built of Europe's great stone cathedrals.

I am on a hot air balloon ride in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to take in some aerial views of the mighty Angkor Wat temple- that's the one you see dead centre. I was so much enamoured of the Angkor Wat aerial view from the hot air balloon that I was really going overboard (not literally, of course, otherwise I wouldn't be here writing this!) shooting it from all angles. Angkor Wat was a Hindu, then subsequently Buddhist temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. The temple was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura, (present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Detailed notes about the Angkor Wat temple appear throughout this album. (see previous and subsequent images). (Siem Reap, Cambodia, Oct. 2008)

Despite the dingy and rather Dickensian appearance, the historic hamman/ bath house in Lahic did look fairly spacious. And the seeming lack of hygiene notwithstanding, the high dome and large arched windows did give it a feeling of luxury. The bath was closed now of course, and a notice outside said it opened by appointment only. I took this picture while cooling my heels and resting a bit while my travel companions enjoy a smoke outside. I do not smoke, so that gave me enough time to cool off a bit. The oldest building in Greenfield Village was imported from England's Cotswold Hills to represent the area from which Henry Ford's ancestors immigrated.
On a barren little hill north of the now deserted Glasnevin, can be found this wonderful old "Mount Joy School." According to M. Hryniuk and F. Korvemaker's "Legacy of Stone" it was completed in 1912 by local stone mason, G. Strothers. It was an opulent building considering the small and poor population. It had a stone porch, a basement and a furnace for winter heating. It operated as a school until 1959. It's still reasonably solid (as of 2013).

The Cotswold Cottage, the oldest building in Greenfield Village, was imported from England's Cotswold Hills to represent the area from which Henry Ford's ancestors immigrated. Built from limestone, it is surrounded by a lush garden inside a limestone wall.
The large stone main building at Mountain Lake lodge was built in 1930. This historic resort is situated on a 2,600-acre nature preserve in the Appalachian Mountains with elevations from 2,200 to 4,365 feet. It is 7.4 miles from downtown Pembroke in Giles County, (southwestern) Virginia. Dirty Dancing was a 1987 romantic drama film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Much of the movie was filmed at the Mountain Lake Lodge. Print Size 13x19 inches.

Chipping Campden is a small market town in Gloucestershire. It is notable for its elegant terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. ("Chipping" is from Old English cēping, "a market, a market-place.") A rich wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, today it is a popular Cotswold tourist destination with old inns, hotels, specialist shops and restaurants. The High Street is lined with honey-coloured limestone buildings, built from the mellow locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of fine vernacular architecture. At its centre stands the Market Hall (pictured) with its splendid arches, built in 1627.

Another view of one of the open air stalls in Lahic selling herbs, spices and other condiments. Lahic reminded me of Sirince (Turkey) and Mtshketa (Georgia), which are also remote villages, now very touristy and set in the mountains. (Mtshketa not that much but it is still surrounded by mountains). The majority of the population of Lahic speaks the Tati language. The residents of the region are usually bilingual: as well as the Tati language (said to originate in Iran), the Azerbaijani language is also widely spoken. Being situated on the left bank of the River Ghirdiman and the slopes of the Niyal Mountain Chain, the settlement of Lahij is a unique living district, with its unusual planning lay out, transport systems, and its public, private and religious buildings. Lahij is an example of early urbanization and architecture, as shown by its cobbled streets and squares, together with its developed sewerage systems and water pipelines. Subterranean kurabandis (‘sewerage system’), made from river stones, and dating back to almost one thousand years, are thought to be one of the most ancient sewage systems used in the world.(Lahic/ Lahij, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017)

This ruined bullding is in the center of Roseau, Dominica. It is on Kennedy Avenue, at or near Hanover Street. I do not know what it was. I found no identification, and there are no clues on maps that I have seen. Maps mention tobacco and sugar factories, but apparently in other locations. Any clues? Any opinions?

The main entrance to the West Virginia Capitol, located at 1900 Kanawha Boulevard East in Charleston, faces south to the Kanawha River; I wish the river had been smoother, for a clearer reflection. A few weeks ago I took a photo of the north side of the building from inside Capitol Plaza (below); the two sides look the same, except that a wing extends from each end to the north of the building. Unfortunately, trees along Kanawha Boulevard, when leafed out, obscure much of the front of the building from my vantage point on the campus of the University of Charleston (a most-hospitable campus, with free 2-hour visitor parking).
A sign at the SW corner of the Capitol Plaza (second photo below) notes that in the early years of the state, the capital city first was Wheeling, then Charleston, and then Wheeling once more, before returning permanently to Charleston in 1885. The building seen here was completed in 1932, replacing one two miles west that burned down in 1921. This beautiful stone structure was designed by architect Cass Gilbert; its height of 293 feet (about five feet higher than the U. S. Capitol) makes it the tallest building in West Virginia. The West Virginia Capitol Complex, consisting of several buildings (chief among them being the Capitol and the Governor's Mansion, or Executive Mansion), was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 (74002009). The Governor's Mansion is a short distance west of the Capitol, at 1716 Kanawha Boulevard.

The remains of small stone huts and dwellings, can be found in various parts of the country. This one
is in Beit Zayit just outside of Jerusalem.
Most likely they were inhabited by shepherds and their families, or by workers who tended the nearby fields and crops.

Bishop's Palace, Wells (Somerset, in the West Country of England): The moat, lined by bare trees, and people taking an afternoon walk on a clear Christmas Eve Day.
The residence of the Bishops of the Diocese of Bath and Wells, the palace dates mostly from the first half of the 13th century (with building beginning ca. 1210). Part of it is open to the public.
