Salford Lads Club, Coronation St, Salford
It’s been over a month since I posted the iconic Salford Lads Club front doors here on Flickr and added it to my Etsy shop… not a sniff of a sale so far, but that’s art and photography for you in a commercial world!
As I mentioned in my previous write-up, Kathy’s parents both lived in Salford and her dad was a member of the club in his youth so it was a great surprise to find this room. Here are stored all the membership records going right back to 1903. It took our guide Ross no time at all to dig out the membership card of Kathy’s dad… and all his brothers from such a well organised and indexed filing system (all the grey boxes on the shelving). We even got photocopies of all the family records and at no cost!
But this room is more than just an archive store… look at the grey panel left of the chairs. That is a laser cut (might be water cut… not sure) panel of a selection of members names, all arranged alphabetically which fill the entire wall behind me. We found Kathy’s dads name and brothers on the wall but it was too high to capture a good close up image (a good reason to go back and try again with a tall tripod).
One final note to mention, many footballers of yesteryear were members of SLC including Brian Doyle (Stoke City), Steve Fleet (Manchester City), Albert McPherson (Walsall and coach at West Bromwich Albion) and most tragic of all – Eddie Coleman (Manchester United) who was killed in the Munich air disaster. That’s his membership card over the desk with his last entry dated 6th February 1958.
On Saturday we saw Manchester City beat Stoke 4-0 in a great game on the amazing Etihad Stadion. Telelenses were not allowed - hence the mobile shot. :)

A bus which always stirs debate amongst the rivet counters because it wears a livery in preservation it never wore 'in service'. I'm afraid I subscribe to the viewpoint that whoever put the money up to buy and save it, has the right to paint it whatever colour he or she desires. Anyway, it's not a great step of imagination as several similar ex Midland Red Alexander bodied Daimler Fleetlines were treated to this livery with the take-over of Midland Red routes / infrastructure / hardware upon the formation of the WMPTE in the early to mid 1970s.
Here, 1969 built UHA 225H sets out on free bus service duties at POPS rally last weekend. The bus has recently had a replacement engine fitted by it's present custodian and now sounds very fit indeed, the old unit was absolutely worn out and failed several months ago.

I seems almost inconceivable nowadays that two of Britain's chassis manufacturers and two of our body manufacturer could churn out this number of buses and more to multiple operators across the country . . . and indeed the world. PMT's 1961 order was for Alexander bodied AEC Reliance single decks and Weymann bodied low height Leyland Atlanteans. The company then used Stoke City FC's training ground / car park to fan the buses out and take several permutations of this photo using a professional photographer.
Recently all this area has been built upon, and in the '80s the dual carriageway A500 cut across the scene laft to right 'above' the level of the buses.

On Sunday the 17th of April 2011, there were 4 foot-ex specials to cater for football fans going to Wembley for the FA cup semi-final between Stoke City and Bolton Wanderers. 2 of these were to go via Leamington, and the other two right down the WCML, with one booked via Northampton. There was always the chance that neither, just the one, or both might go via Northampton, but at least 67003 heading 1Z37 Horwich-Wembley took the booked route and is seen here passing Weedon. Stoke thrashed Bolton 5-0 for any of of you who care.......

The old Victoria Hotel, a pub once popular with the supporters of Stoke City football club sitting close to the site of the old Victoria Ground, just outside the centre of the town of Stoke.
This former licensed premises straddles the junction of Campbell Road, Fletcher Road and Boothen Road (another name synonymous with the old football ground, which had a "Boothen End" terrace).
Unfortunately, the pubs decline was probably associated with the relocation of the football ground to a new site.
My memories of The Victoria revolve around a game of squash at the nearby Booth Street recreation centre, then a pint to follow in the pub along with a game of snooker on one of the upstairs tables. I only used the pub a couple of times on match days.

Stoke-on-Trent, born and bred. Sir Stanley Matthews, CBE (1 February 1915 – 23 February 2000) was an English footballer. Often regarded as one of the greatest players of the English game, he is the only player to have been knighted while still playing, as well as being the first winner of both the European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awards. Matthews' nicknames included "The Wizard of the Dribble" and "The Magician".
A near-vegetarian teetotaller, he kept fit enough to play at the top level until he was 50 years old. He was also the oldest player ever to play in England's top football division and the oldest player ever to represent the country. He played his final competitive game in 1985, at the age of 70. Matthews was also an inaugural inductee to the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002 to honour his contribution to the English game.
He spent nineteen years with Stoke City, playing for the "Potters" from 1932 to 1947, and again from 1961 to 1965. He helped Stoke to the Second Division title in 1932–33 and 1962–63. In between his two spells at Stoke he spent fourteen years with Blackpool; where he became an FA Cup winner in 1953 (known as the Matthews Final), after he was on the losing side in the 1948 and 1951 finals. Between 1937 and 1957 he won 54 caps for England, playing in the FIFA World Cup in 1950 and 1954, and winning nine British Home Championship titles.
Following an unsuccessful stint as Port Vale's general manager between 1965 and 1968, he travelled around the world, coaching enthusiastic amateurs. Most notable of his coaching experiences came when he established an all-black team in Soweto known as "Stan's Men" – this was despite South Africa's harsh apartheid laws at the time.
When he died, 100,000 people lined the streets of Stoke-on-Trent to pay their respects as he passed through the city for one last time.
From a time when footballers were gentlemen: no diving, no swearing, no spitting, no grotesquely overpaid and spoilt prima donnas, I give you Sir Stanley Matthews www.youtube.com/watch?v=54HRpvcRn0w

Panorama constructed from 28 images showing the old Victoria Hotel, which was opposite the Victoria Ground, home to Stoke City FC from 1878 until 1997, when they moved to the Britannia Stadium. Ongoing from that move the status of this once lively Pub, has now waned, and as you can now see is up for sale. Sadly not sure what happens next?
Sam and Stan.
It is 100 years since Sir Stanley Matthews was born
(1915 -2000) and this year marks the centenary of his birth.
An old photograph of my brother Sam in 1963, designing the model of Sir Stanley Matthews. Sam was filmed by the BBC and a small section of this film was shown on the award night...his 10 seconds of fame :)).
Sam was 19 at the time and what you can't see is his Elvis Presley slick hair style! :))
Sir Stan was playing for Stoke City at the time.
Footballing greats Sir Tom Finney, Nat Lofthouse, Sir Bobby Charlton and Gordon Banks were among the pall-bearers at Sir Stanley's funeral.
