Per Wiki...The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 for having state-level significance in the theme of engineering. It was nominated for being a rare surviving example of a vertical-lift highway bridge based on the designs pioneered by Waddell & Harrington. The Stillwater Lift Bridge is one of two bridges on the St. Croix River between the Interstate 94 bridge in Hudson, Wisconsin, and the U.S. Highway 8 bridge in Taylors Falls, Minnesota, providing a popular and useful alternative to those crossings. (The other bridge is the Minnesota State Highway 243 bridge at Osceola, Wisconsin.)

The bridge consists of seven fixed steel truss spans 1,050 feet (320 m) long in total, including a vertically lifting span 140 feet (43 m) long. It is 23 feet (7.0 m) wide, allowing one lane of traffic in each direction. The lifting span is a Waddell & Harrington type, one of six built in Minnesota and Wisconsin and one of three still remaining today. Built in 1931 to replace a swing bridge from 1910, it was the last bridge of this design to be built in the area. Minnesota and Wisconsin evenly split the $460,174 cost of the bridge.

There wasn't a breath of wind yesterday as we walked along the beach, so every rock pool gave great photographic possibilities. I wanted the reflection of the waterfall, but was much more pleased with the reflections of the clouds in the foreground!

Two small turtles, silent and shy,

clung to a rock at dusk.

The lake stretched out under a soft sky,

its silence as peaceful as its fear.

The world around them shimmered and stirred

—the kind of glow that doesn’t ask for attention —

it just quietly exists, wrapping the turtles in a hush

that only they understand.

They didn't speak, but both knew that

clinging in silent grace

could transform the whole world again

into a safe and sacred place.

This array of buildings once belonged to the historic old Ritchie's Mill. A water mill has been on this site since 1831. The water of the South Esk River that poured down the Cataract Gorge was used to power the mill to produce flour. Flooding was a constant problem, but in 1876 David Ritchie replaced the old wooden mill with a stone one. In 1910 the silos were added, designed by the great Launceston architect, Alexander North.

In the devastating floods of 1929, a great deal of damage was done, and it was after the rebuild that the mill was electrified. Today it is one of the more fashionable Launceston restaurants, Stillwater.

This site has a rich history that is so well told in Geoff Ritchie's blog. ontheconvicttrail.blogspot.com/2016/09/ritchies-mill-laun...

One long fence for this fine Fence Friday.

I'm sorry, I finally found a fence I like and I've failed miserably at any witty stuff to say about it. I had some titles but now it's just "Fence, Stillwater, NJ" If you give me a chance I know I'll improve!! :))

Frantz Lake State Wildlife Area

day after Christmas, the lift bridge now closed to traffic, has been changed into a hiking trail across the St Croix River..a new bridge a few miles downstream replaced this once important border crossing between Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Two ducks glide through a shallow body of water, surrounded by tall green grasses and reeds. Their brown and tan plumage reflects clearly in the calm surface, creating a serene moment of symmetry and motion. The scene captures the quiet rhythm of nature and the ducks’ instinctive companionship as they move in unison.

The lake is calm & the sky quiet.

Staying warm together...

The sirens were going off as I shot this six photo panorama. We were pretty much standing under the outer band of the storm cell. Within minutes a tornado descended. What a show!

The distant mountains are the Beartooths. What cannot be seen is the development just over the river. Great what a low angle can eliminate.

The best part about getting up early in the mornings is having scenes like this all to yourself.
