Waterfall opposite the Grüne Wand Hütte, Stilluptal, Austria just before it disappeared into shadow. To give a sense of scale, those are fully grown trees in the bottom right hand corner.
The day we took the hike up the Stilluptal Valley was pretty overcast, however the minerals within the glacial flow into the Speicher Stillup Reservoir turn the water a pleasing shade of green. That effect is well seen in this five stitch photo.
Initially taken as a picture of a waterfall in the Stilluptal Valley, Austrian Tyrol. Only after I got home did I first notice this face.
I know diddly squat about flowers but like most of us I can appreciate something of natural beauty. This particular bloom was one of many we came across on a hike up the Stilluptal Valley.

Today is the wonderful holiday. With this pleasant temperature we go into the mountains. We start simple by driving to Hintertux, We drive all the way to the end of the valley where we take the cable car to the Sommerbergalm at 2100 m. There are three cable cars available. To transport the large number of tourists on the Hintertux Glacier, three large gondola lifts have been built: the so-called glacier buses Gletscherbusse where the gondolas are suspended on two steel cables and are able to carry 24 people each. The Gletscherbus 3 is the highest cable car system using two cables in the world.The glacier buses are cable cars of the Funitel type. The third large gondola is now called the Gletscherbus 1 and runs from the valley station up to the Sommerbergalm. The Tuxertal is largest side valley of the Zillertal. The Tuxertal is primarily known for its summer ski on the Hintertux glacier. The valley offers many and varied walks. At the end of the Tuxertal you can find a side valley; the Weitental . Our goal for today is a hike to the Tuxerjochhaus at 2310 m. From here we walk back through the Weitental, along the Schleier waterfall to the village of Hintertux at 1499 m. The climb to the Tuxerjochhaus appears to be very steep, The altitude should be completed in a relatively short distance. Finally at the hut we can have a rest and lunch. Once at the Tuxerjochhaus, we can savour superb views of the glaciers where we made last year and tour with a guide over and Gefrorene Wand. From the Tuxerjochhaus you go through a lovely alpine meadow with a little bit of luck, you’ll get to see some ibex on their morning “rounds” and hear the whistle of the marmots. The meadow is getting narrower and ends in a sort of gap where the stream finally collapsed in a beautiful waterfall in the Tuxer valley. The path is very well until the gorge. The gorge itself is steep and narrow. Making steps in the rocks and making ropes against the rock one can still reasonably find the way down. Back in the valley we notice the temperature is definitely 10 degrees higher than the temperature which we have walked in the whole day. In the village its 30 degrees, such a big difference.
Today we ramp with the gondola to Sommerbergalm at 2100 m. From here we have a steep climb to the Tuxerjoch house where we indulge a little rest and enjoy the magnificent view. The first stage features already highlights in abundance: On the path heading to Weitental you pass a waterfall. An absolute highlight is the Schleier waterfall nature treasure. The nearby rocks are renowned climbing spots! Impressive fact - Tux water is of drinking water quality – refresh yourself at one of the many springs in the natural surroundings or just at a tap! At this waterfall in the direction of Bichlalm, we take a rest an then get off to Hintertux. This walking route travels through a wonderful mixed forest area including also Alpine maple trees. Time: 4 hours. Length: 8.4 kilometers.

De hoogtemeters moeten in een vrij korte afstand afgelegd worden. Boven bij de hut kunnen we uitrusten en lunchen. We hebben een prachtig uitzicht op de Gletsjer, waar we vorig jaar en tocht met een gids overheen hebben gemaakt en de Gefrorene Wand. Vanaf het Tuxer Jochhaus ga je door een prachtige alm met marmotten naar beneden. De alm wordt steeds smaller en eindigt in een soort kloof waar het beekje tenslotte als Schleier waterval in het Tuxertal stort. Het pad is tot de kloof heel goed te lopen. De kloof zelf is steil en smal. Met het maken van treden in de rotsen en het aanbrengen van touwen tegen de rotswand kan men toch redelijk de weg naar beneden vinden. Terug in het dal blijkt dat de temperatuur zeker 10 graden hoger ligt dan de temperatuur waar wij de hele dag in gelopen hebben. In het dorpje is het 30 graden, even omschakelen dus.
The Stilluptal valley is privately owned and has thankfully seen little intrusion from man. The great exception of course is this reservoir which is used to generate hydro electricity for the nearby town of Mayrhofen.

Our goal for today is a hike to the Tuxerjochhaus at 2310 m. From here we walk back through the Weitental, along the Schleier waterfall to the village of Hintertux at 1499 m. The climb to the Tuxerjochhaus appears to be very steep, The altitude should be completed in a relatively short distance. Finally at the hut we can have a rest and lunch. De zon verwarmt de aarde, die niet homogeen van samenstelling is, denk aan zand of kleigrond. Hoe minder vocht de bodem bevat, hoe sneller de bodem en de lucht erboven opwarmt. De warmere lucht boven de grond stijgt op. Er ontstaat dan thermiek. Hierin kunnen zweefvliegtuigen en vogels al cirkelend hoogte winnen om met de gewonnen hoogte grote afstanden af te kunnen leggen. De waterdamp in de thermiekbel kan condenseren op een hoogte waar, door de dalende temperatuur, de relatieve luchtvochtigheid tot ca. 100% is gestegen. Er ontstaat een wolk als deze Latijnse naam cumulus.

Daar nemen we de kabelbaan naar de Sommerbergalm op 2100 m. Op deze alm zijn een drietal skiliften te vinden. Met de GletscherBus II, een 24-persoons Funitel, en de 4er Fernerhaus, een 4-persoons gondelbaan kan men van de Sommerbergalm naar het Tuxer Fernerhaus gaan, waar men een goed uitzicht heeft op de Hintertux gletsjer. Het Tuxertal het grootste zijdal van het Zillertal. Het Tuxertal is hoofdzakelijk bekend van het zomerskigebied op de gletsjer van Hintertux. Het dal heeft in tegenstelling tot de Zillergrund, het Stilluptal en de Zemmgrund, geen stuwmeer. Het dal biedt veel en gevarieerde wandelmogelijkheden. Het Tuxertal kent aan het eind ook nog een zijdal, het Weitental. Ons doel voor vandaag is het Tuxer Joch Haus op 2310 m. The gorge itself is steep and narrow. Making steps in the rocks and making ropes against the rock one can still reasonably find the way down. Back in the valley we notice the temperature is definitely 10 degrees higher than the temperature which we have walked in the whole day. In the village its 30 degrees, such a big difference.

Terug in het dal blijkt dat de temperatuur zeker 10 graden hoger ligt dan de temperatuur waar wij de hele dag in gelopen hebben. In het dorpje is het 30 graden, even omschakelen dus.

Today is a wonderful holiday. With this pleasant temperature we go into the mountains. We start simple by driving to Hintertux, We drive all the way to the end of the valley where we take the cable car to the Sommerbergalm at 2100 m. There are three cable cars available. To transport the large number of tourists on the Hintertux Glacier, three large gondola lifts have been built: the so-called glacier buses Gletscherbusse where the gondolas are suspended on two steel cables and are able to carry 24 people each. The Gletscherbus 3 is the highest cable car system using two cables in the world.The glacier buses are cable cars of the Funitel type. The third large gondola is now called the Gletscherbus 1 and runs from the valley station up to the Sommerbergalm. The Tuxertal is largest side valley of the Zillertal. The Tuxertal is primarily known for its summer ski on the Hintertux glacier. The valley offers many and varied walks. At the end of the Tuxertal you can find a side valley; the Weitental . Our goal for today is a hike to the Tuxerjochhaus at 2310 m. From here we walk back through the Weitental, along the Schleier waterfall to the village of Hintertux at 1499 m. The climb to the Tuxerjochhaus appears to be very steep, The altitude should be completed in a relatively short distance. Finally at the hut we can have a rest and lunch. Once at the Tuxerjochhaus, we can savour superb views of the glaciers where we made last year and tour with a guide over and Gefrorene Wand. From the Tuxerjochhaus you go through a lovely alpine meadow with a little bit of luck, you’ll get to see some ibex on their morning “rounds” and hear the whistle of the marmots. The meadow is getting narrower and ends in a sort of gap where the stream finally collapsed in a beautiful waterfall in the Tuxer valley. The path is very well until the gorge. The gorge itself is steep and narrow. Making steps in the rocks and making ropes against the rock one can still reasonably find the way down. Back in the valley we notice the temperature is definitely 10 degrees higher than the temperature which we have walked in the whole day. In the village its 30 degrees, such a big difference.
Today we ramp with the gondola to Sommerbergalm at 2100 m. From here we have a steep climb to the Tuxerjoch house where we indulge a little rest and enjoy the magnificent view. BieJee and Samantha descent through the countryside Weitental. On Schleier waterfall in the direction of Bichlalm, where we take a rest an then get off to Hintertux. Met de GletscherBus II, een 24-persoons Funitel, en de 4er Fernerhaus, een 4-persoons gondelbaan kan men van de Sommerbergalm naar het Tuxer Fernerhaus gaan, waar men een goed uitzicht heeft op de Hintertux gletsjer. Het Tuxertal het grootste zijdal van het Zillertal. Het Tuxertal is hoofdzakelijk bekend van het zomerskigebied op de gletsjer van Hintertux. Het dal heeft in tegenstelling tot de Zillergrund, het Stilluptal en de Zemmgrund, geen stuwmeer. Het dal biedt veel en gevarieerde wandelmogelijkheden. Het Tuxertal kent aan het eind ook nog een zijdal, het Weitental. Ons doel voor vandaag is het Tuxer Joch Haus op 2310 m. Vanuit hier terug lopen via het Weitental, langs de Schleier waterval naar het dorpje Hintertux op 1499 m. Het blijkt nog een zeer stevige klim te zijn naar het Tuxer Joch Haus. De hoogtemeters moeten in een vrij korte afstand afgelegd worden. Boven bij de hut kunnen we uitrusten en lunchen. We hebben een prachtig uitzicht op de Gletsjer, waar we vorig jaar en tocht met een gids overheen hebben gemaakt en de Gefrorene Wand. The cave is considered to be one of the most important cave in Tyrol and presents above all an insight into the high alpine karstification of the glacier regions. About 5km of cave system have been identified, but guided tours only allow access to a smaller section. The Stilluptal is located in the Zillertal Alps Nature Park and, at 17 kilometers, is the shortest of the four side valleys.
A winding toll road in the back Zillertal leads with a slope of up to 15 percent over a length of 8 km to the Stillupspeicher. It lies at an altitude of 1,116 m and was built in 1966 with a length of 2.5 km. The scenic valley invites hikers, walkers and cyclists to explore.
