With a new smartphone, what's more, a panorama ! Sorry I'm so slow these days. The phone arrived on Friday - a big step to upgrade to one of these from a very old, cheap android, so please be patient with me, I am finding it ever so confusing - I hope I haven't made a big mistake. As 'smartphones' go, it's so smart, it's outwitting me - but it's mine now, it's delivered and I signed for it - too late !

You might find this music appropriate - hope it makes you smile :-)

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

The guns at Fort Perch Rock were fired only twice in anger. The first occasion occurred during the First World War. A Norwegian sailing ship came up the Rock Channel that had been declared closed at the start of the war. Unfortunately the gunners had the wrong elevation on their gun and the shell flew over the ship and landed in Hightown on the other side of the Mersey. Apparently an irate householder collected the shell, put it in a bucket and took it to the Merseyside Defence HQ and demanded some kind of explanation!

The name of the artist escapes me at present, but this is located around Detroit’s Necklace District. If you look on the map of Downtown Detroit, the streets are patteryafter a necklace unlike the majority of the grids in Detroit. But this serves as a fitting tribute to a childhood prodigy. I have yet to see him in concert, but I’ve seen him live on TV many times over the decades.

You're not superstitious, are you?

Happy Friday the Thirteenth!!!

YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE

You are the sunshine of my life

That's why I'll always be around

You are the apple of my eye

Forever you'll stay in my heart

I feel like this is the beginning

Though I've loved you for a million years

And if I thought our love was ending

I'd find myself drowning in my own tears

You are the sunshine of my life

That's why I'll always stay around

You are the apple of my eye (love has joined us)

Forever you'll stay in my heart (love, sweet love)

You must have known that I was lonely

Because you came to my rescue

And I know that this must be heaven

How could so much love be inside of you?

You are the sunshine of my life, yeah

That's why I'll always stay around

You are the apple of my eye (love has joined us)

Forever you'll stay in my heart (love, sweet love)

you are the sunshine of my life, baby

(Love has joined us) that's why I'll always stay around

(Love, sweet love)

Today is the 27th of Valentine's Day of February. And today I wish to express my love and gratitude for the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Sunrise or Sunset?

A poem by Joan Leotta

Staring into the sky as sun makes its appearance or slips away, I often imagine I can see beyond our atmosphere, beyond space, into the paradise that once was. Sunrise, sunset, two breaches of the wall of separation between this world and the next, shifts between darkness and light. I’ve watched sun rising up from water and, later, sinking down into it.

Over history, dawn is called the way to life, and sunset named as the passing out of it.

For me, both are times to celebrate that same shift, that brief moment that opens a narrow path between this world and the next.

I sometimes wonder why we claim one a start and the other a finish when the true beauty lies in that moment of transience, a movement between earth and paradise, dark and light that defies science, a movement only artists of brush and pen can define.

Red gold sun spreads

across the horizon line

in both dawn and dusk.

May every sunrise hold more promise and every sunset hold more peace.

Umair Siddiqui

There's a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they're absolutely free. Don't miss so many of them.

Jo Walton

If you are in a beautiful place where you can enjoy sunrise and sunset, then you are living like a lord. The sky takes on shades of orange during sunrise and sunset, the colour that gives you hope that the sun will set only to rise again. There was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope

#MacroMondays

#String

An "up-close and personal" view into a cut-open, orange-patterned paracord rope. The moment you cut paracord, both the inner strings (seven single strings that are themselves made of numerous even thinner strings) and the braided sheath, as well made of thin strings (that are also made of even thinner...? It's dizzying) start to fringe badly so you better have a (stick) lighter at hand. But here, this was the effect I wanted to have.

I have made a few (very basic and simple) paracord camera wrist straps with one of the easiest weaves, the cobra weave (everything else is beyond my braiding skills). The next project was supposed to be a camera shoulder strap. Still, of course, I wanted it to look fancy and so I wanted to combine two differently coloured/patterned paracord ropes – and ended up with a hopelessly tangled mess that also "ended" the shoulder strap project. As time (a long time) passed, I came to prefer wrist straps over shoulder straps because if you wear your camera gear as I used to (photo bag cross-body to the right, camera on strap cross-body to the left) it quickly becomes uncomfortable, especially around the neck/throat area. Problem solved (and enough material left for more paracord wrist straps) :)

The image didn't work as long as I used a black background and tried to incorporate more than a very small part of the (backlit) paracord because the rope, and even more so the inner strings are way too thin to effectively backlight them with a regular flashlight, and that flashlight already is a small one with a diameter of only 1,5 cm/0,59 inches. I almost wanted to quit but then thought "blue". So the blue glitter foam sheet, dull side up, came to the rescue. The tricky part was to place the paracord rope so I could photograph it face-to-face. Placing the piece on an upside-down, tiny glass jar gave me the right height but produced unwanted, distracting reflections in the glass from the single light source (natural light photo lamp from above). So in the end, I used my camera's (empty) spare battery case which has a small opening on top. I fixated the rope with a clamp, stuck it into the battery case, and bent it so the lens would "look" right into the paracord section.

The image is made of 50 focus bracketing images combined in Helicon Focus, Method C, S3 (and still, not everything is in focus due to the slightly pulled-out inner strings and the depth of the view). The paracord section is 4 mm/0.15 inches in diameter.

I'm very busy today and will properly catch up with you tonight.

Lately I seem to be drawn to low-key when it comes to MM captures. At first I took a few captures of an owl feather I found at the Tierpark Berlin, but since I can't prove that it's an "O" for owl feather and not simply a "B" for any (any starts with an "a", though...) bird and therefore a consonant feather, and since I had little time, I decided to stick to this not very original (was the theme "Apple" btw?), however pleasantly blasé apple wedge. Not exactly a beauty, but as the saying goes: "Every Jack will find his Jill" (and vice versa, as it's not really clear whether this is a "he" or a "she" - in German it's "der" Apfel = he; but "die" Apfelspalte = she). No good news for this apple slice, however, because both Jack and Jill for him/her in the end was... my mouth.

Processed in Luminar (details and microstructure, dodged the "eye" to highlight it a little), and LR (matte effect and vignette).

The end of every year is also the time to make New Year's resolutions, and I've decided that a Flickr-related resolution will be that in 2019 I will only take part in MMs when I'm absolutely convinced that my idea is good enough (and the picture is so, too). As I'd mentioned earlier I have posted many similar captures for MMs recently, many of them only to avoid skipping, but I definitely don't want to bore you. There are also so many other captures I'd like to show you, as 2018 was a tremendously "photo-rich" year, and I feel that my non-MM captures somehow get the short end of the stick. So 2019 will be the "skip MMs from time to time" year. This, I hope, will also give me more time for viewing and commenting on your wonderful uploads, something that I felt went short more and more, too.

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone :-)

I couldn't help but think of this classic tune when I was shooting this lovely perfume bottle.

I'm still trying to fulfill my New Year's resolution by shooting with artificial light more often. This is my 5th or 6th shot using a strobe.

Normally I'd use a pink, peach, or red backdrop because of the pale pink label and peachy-amber liquid, but this time I thought I'd use more complimentary tones.

I've had this Stevie Wonder classic in my head for the last two days since I got this fragrance.

I wanted to shoot this perfume bottle with more "expected tones" but in a way I don't think I've really done before.

(See, I can do non-bokeh shots, too!)

Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony

Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh Lord, why don't we?

We learn to live, when we learn to give

Each other what we need to survive, together alive

Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony

Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh Lord why don't we?

Songwriter: Paul McCartney

Performed by: Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder (1982)

A very challenging theme … “Solidarity”. After two days of thinking about this theme, it came to me in a moment. I was watching CNN last night, only to learn that another black man, Rayshard Brooks, had been shot and killed by a police officer, in the United States. For some reason I started thinking of the song by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, “Ebony and Ivory” from 1982. And that led to my piano pic for this weeks’ theme.

Every November day would be like this - it was magic. We saw our special friend, this beautiful horse. The sky was blue, the countryside was beautiful and we were happy with the joy the day brought. Reminded me of all the happiest days of all autumns past. Here's a song for you which always makes me happy whenever I hear it and I hope it makes you happy too.
