Drag On by Sterling Ruby
Often drawing upon autobiographical or sociopolitical sources, Sterling Ruby’s DRAG ON depicts a cannon with untamed brush strokes of crimson, azure, and black paint traversing the surface. With a theatrical flair, the sculpture is rough, powerful, and yet reminiscent of a national flag in an almost liquefied state. The representation of the cunnon-cum-coffin channels the conflicts between individual impulses and mechanisms of social control, as well as American domination and its decline. Dealing in juxtaposition and paradox, reconfiguring systems of representation and repurposing elements in new and unsettling ways, the work manifests itself as a balanced combination of philosophical enquiry and material investigation. As Ruby continues to mine the legacy of modern and contemporary sculpture, DRAG ON projects an earnest hope for a non-hierarchical, boundaryless universe.

CDCR by Sterling Ruby
Sterling Ruby critiques mechanisms of social control, American domination, and dysfunctional psychology, all of which are present in this work. The title CDCR stands for ‘California Department of Corections and Rehabilitations’, reflecting Ruby’s use of acronyms to reference the government agencies he questions. This enormous sculpture was created over the course of several months, during which Ruby poured liquid urethane over a large form constructed out of a repurposed Stalagmite work. The piece is coated with red and blue pigment mixed with clear urethane, appearing wet yet frozen in formation. Leaning on its side, the sculpture connotes the violence of weaponry, yet emasculated by its futile lack of function.

ArtZuid
ARTZUID is an international large-scale sculpture exhibition which takes place every two years in Amsterdam.
ARTZUID was established in 2008.The initiative came from United Art Consult led by Cintha van Heeswijck. From 2009 on, the exhibition takes place every odd year in the monumental Art-Deco district in Amsterdam, designed in 1917 by Hendrik P. Berlage. ARTZUID sculpture route starts at the Museum Square in front of the Rijksmuseum and stretches for 2,5 kilometers south along the Minervalaan, the Apollolaan and Churchilllaan and finally up to the Station Zuid.
The eighth edition of the Amsterdam Sculpture Biennial ARTZUID took place from 19 May to 24 September 2023. On Apollolaan and Minervalaan in Amsterdam-Zuid, 50 sculptures have been selected by curator Jasper Krabbé under the theme Transfer.
The selected art reflects the transfer of social commitment of artists and iconic movements from the 60s, 80s, and 2000s that brought ‘art to the streets’. Think (Neo)Pop art, Nouveau Realisme, Arte Povera and Street art. With the help of sponsors, ten commissions were given to Dutch artists.

ArtyParty: My Cup Runneth Over - IMRAN™
I’ll be honest. I love art but I also cannot stand pure crap that shows up in museums or art galleries when some so called artist literally hangs a garbage can, some disposed cardboard cartons, wire hangers, and pure garbage objects. It’s just not my cup of tea. I’ve also had more than my fill of even more stupid pseudo connoisseurs, standing there gawking in pretentiousness, trying to seem like art aficionados. During my visit to the Nesher Sculpture Garden and gallery, there literally was an item displayed exactly as I describe above - literally hanging bullshit garbage I could’ve assembled in 7 minutes.. But, that same artist, Sterling Ruby, did also produce some unique, creative, gorgeous works, which I truly appreciated. This sculpture is one of his many works that I loved. Let’s discuss it... over a cup of coffee. 😊

Per The Smithsonian Magazine September 2020:
When the sculpture garden at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden finally reopened last month in Washington (DC) after being closed off to visitors for the past 20 weeks due to the worldwide pandemic, the occasion was marked by a beacon of light.
The 24-foot tall tapers of Sterling Ruby’s bronze sculpture 'Double Candle' was one of a pair of monumental sculptures installed in the interim to be part of a slightly redesigned and reshuffled garden. For the 48-year-old artist, it was the latest in a wide-ranging career in art that has covered a number of disciplines, from recreating a Supermax prison at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2008 to soft work that incorporated the American flag. An earlier version of Double Candle, covered in American flags, appeared as part of a Ruby retrospective at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art earlier this year.
Ruby said that Double Candle was a soft sculpture that was then cast in bronze using a traditional lost-wax technique. The challenge of this is pulling a platinum silicone mold off of a non-rigid form that also has a nappy and fibrous surface texture (from the polyfleece).
It took a lot of experimentation to stiffen and stabilize the surface, yet still maintain the texture of the fabric. Chasing the welds of the bronze panels proved to be a greater challenge, as the texture is equally difficult to replicate during that process. The only remnants of the fabrication process are a single, straight and unfinished weld down the sides of each candle, where the original fabric seams were. Here the stitches of the weld symbolize the stitching of the fabric from the original soft sculpture.
Ruby wanted Double Candle to be solemn and dark, located in the lineage of bronze sculptures throughout art history.
At the same time, the surface needed to convey nuances of fabric, the original material from which it was cast. The patina picks up the depth and texture of the textile, its folds and seams. There is a gravity to the weight and color, it will turn greener with time and hopefully have a gradient that changes from the flame down to the bottom of the candle.
Rudy said that there will be a third and final Double Candle, and he was working right now on where the next one will be installed.
