Bellevue, Washington, USA.

This is an image of Bellevue, the very much beleaguered stepsister suburb ten miles east of Seattle. I suppose if Seattle is the Emerald City (as we like to call it here), Bellevue might be “Munchkinland” perhaps.

(If you’ve never read the book or seen the movie, The Wizard of Oz, none of these references may make any sense).

Still, as much as I don’t understand Seattle’s disdain for Bellevue after nearly a decade here, there’s no doubt that Bellevue continues to grow, transform, and expand. Bellevue still serves as the headquarters of T-Mobile, Eddie Bauer, Symetra, and the Pokémon Company to name a short few. Microsoft has a satellite building here. Expedia is also headquartered in Bellevue, but will move to Seattle in 2018, and Recreational Equipment, Inc. (a.k.a. REI) will relocate its headquarters from Kent (another suburb) to Bellevue in 2020.

Alas, Bellevue is an “urban-suburban force” to be acknowledged (and makes for great urban landscapes as well).

Ruby is a little daschund that often visits the farm at sunset. Her stepsister, Coco, preferred to stay home this time, however. Ruby is the protective one, while Coco is easy going.

Lovely Lola visited the farm with her mom and stepsister, and found the sights and smells very interesting. My fancy treat had her briefly focused on me, as I snapped this photo, with the pollinator garden behind her.

Luna is tuckered out after frolicking around Wright-Locke Farm today. I enjoyed taking photos of her and Rayna, her stepsister, at various pretty spots on the property. Rayna was the focus, though, and I'm still working on those photos, so here's Luna. She's a very good girl!

Ulysses, also known as Uly, visited the farm on a walk today. I snapped some photos while his stepsister enjoyed patting the goats. He earned his fancy treats!

Cinderella may have had the glass slippers, but I'll bet she would have loved a matching crystal bow for the hair, and maybe those nice spurs to deal with the evil stepsisters!

It was nice to see Freya today, a friend's miniature husky. I'd last seen her as a puppy, and now she's an obedient young lady. Above, she shows off her leaping ability, as her stepsister, Nova, tries to join her.

Los Angeles 1948. A sleepy movie town full of movie star wannabes, corrupt cops, beach bums, and scandals. Stepsister to San Francisco and scorned by New York it was a destination for grifters, loafers, and dreamers—the kind of place where a guy could drop into a cheap bar to forget, and end up remembering too much. L.A. 1948, a place where big schemes were too often met by dashed dreams.

It was a delight to spend some time photographing Rayna, 14, and her stepsister, Luna, yesterday at Wright-Locke Farm. She's a board member's golden retriever, and posed nicely at various spots around the beautiful property.

I took all of the photos in this montage at The House of Happy Walls Museum in Jack London State Historic Park. The residence was built by Charmian London and Eliza Shepard, Jack London’s stepsister, after London’s death in 1916. Architect, Harry P. Merritt designed the House of Happy Walls to be Charmian’s home and ultimately, a museum. She lived in the house from 1935 until 1952. Today, the newly re-designed exhibits in the Museum showcase the adventurous and inspiring lives of the Londons.

Who's that girl ? It looks like Cinderella, but she can not be,

we left her home with a lot of chores to do, ....but she looks like ....

Rosemary (I think) and Coco are regular visitors to the farm, and I snapped some photos while their mom and stepsister patted the goats. My new jerky treats must be especially delicious, as dogs are very enthusiastic for them.

SCOUT: "Paddy! Paddy!" *Excited.* "Paddy come and look!"

PADDY: "What is it, Scout? Are you alright?"

SCOUT: "Of course I am alright. Paddy! Why would anything be wrong?"

PADDY: "Well, usually when you call me, Scout, it's because something is... well wrong... and you need help."

SCOUT: "Oh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "Well, in this case I don't need help today, Paddy! I am excited!"

PADDY: "Why Scout? What did you find in this pumpkin patch?"

SCOUT: "I found a coach, Paddy!"

PADDY: "A coach?" *Surprised.*

SCOUT: "Yes Paddy!" *Nods emphatically.* "You know, a carriage."

PADDY: "Yes Scout, I know what a coach is." *Looks around.* "I don't see any coach."

SCOUT: "Then you aren't looking hard enough, Paddy! It's right here!" *Points excitedly towards a nice ripe pumpkin.*

PADDY: "That isn't a coach Scout!" *Shakes head.*

SCOUT: "Yes it is, Paddy!" *Nods head.*

PADDY: "No it's not!" *Shakes head more.* "It's a pumpkin!"

SCOUT: "It is a coach Paddy! Don't listen to him, my beautiful one!" *Strokes pumpkin's rind with paw lovingly.* "Or rather, it could be, Paddy, with a bit of magic! It is full of potential! It could be the best coach in the whole wide world, EVER!"

PADDY: "Do you mean like Cinderella's coach, Scout?"

SCOUT: "Oh no, Paddy!" *Shakes head.* "Better than that, Paddy: Scoutarella's coach!" *Jumps up and down excitedly.*

PADDY: "Scoutarella?" *Alarmed.*

SCOUT: "Yes! That will be me!" *Pats chest with paw proudly.* "I shall be Scoutarella, and my magic pumpkin coach can drive me to the royal ball where I can dance in my very best tutu with Prince Peter, who also happens to be mijn beste vriend, and Princess Rosie, who also happens to be Prince Peter's princess! You can come too, Paddy, but no-one will dance with you."

PADDY: "Why not, Scout? I happen to be a very good dancer." *Disgruntled.*

SCOUT: "Well, for somebear who is ancient, from ye olden days when the world was black and white, you are a good dancer, but no-one dances like that any more!" *Giggles.* "Besides, somebear has to play a wicked stepsister!

PADDY: "Scout!"

SCOUT: "What?!?!"

PADDY: "Well it isn't going to be me, Scout!" *Folds paws akimbo across chest. "Besides, how many times must I tell you that it is rude to discuss my age in such a way! Anyway, as I keep saying, it wasn't the world that was black and white. It was the telly that was!"

SCOUT: "That's what you say, Paddy!" *Scoffs.* "Well... what's your magic like?"

PADDY: "My magic, Scout?" *Alarmed.*

SCOUT: "Yes Paddy! I need a faerie godbear to come and transform this pumpkin into my beautiful magical golden coach coach. That could be you... if your magic is good enough that is!" *Nods seriously.*

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Super senior Ulysses, also known as Uly, visited the farm on a walk today. I snapped some photos while his stepsister enjoyed patting the goats. He's 15 years old and earned his fancy treats!

For Smile on Saturday! :-)

The theme this week is 'Words'

Words, so innocent and powerless as they are…how potent for good and evil they become, in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.” (Nathaniel Hawthorne)

In this scene Cinderella is introduced to her Fairy Godmother, who shows herself as a beggar woman in the beginning.

Cinderella is upset because her stepmother won't let her go to the Ball.

THE HISTORY OF CINDERELLA:

Cinderella is one of the most recognized stories around the world. The themes from the story appear in the folklore of many cultures. Sources disagree about how many versions of the tale exist, with numbers ranging from 340 to over 1,500 if all of the picture book and musical interpretations are included. The tale has its own Aarne Thompson classification which is 510A. The tale always centers around a kind, but persecuted heroine who suffers at the hands of her step-family after the death of her mother. Her father is either absent or neglectful, depending on the version. The heroine has a magical guardian who helps her triumph over her persecuters and receive her fondest wish by the end of the tale. The guardian is sometimes a representative of the heroine's dead mother. Most of the tales include an epiphany sparked by an article of clothing (usually a shoe) that causes the heroine to be recognized for her true worth.

The earliest recorded version of the tale comes from China. It was written down by Tuan Ch'eng-shih in the middle of the ninth century A.D. (850-60 Common Era). The tone of the story implies that its readers and listeners were already well-acquainted with the story by the time it was written down. The heroine of the Chinese tale is Yeh-shen. There is no fairy godmother in this earliest known version. A magical fish is Yeh-shen's helper instead. However, a golden shoe is used to identify Yeh-shen to the prince who wants to marry her.

Although a reference to the story exists in 16th century German literature, the next written version of the story comes from Charles Perrault in his Contes de ma Mere L'Oye in 1697. From this version, we received the fairy godmother, the pumpkin carriage, the animal servants, and the glass slippers. Perrault recorded the story that was told to him by storytellers while adding these touches for literary effect. Some scholars think Perrault confused "vair" (French for "ermine or fur") with "verre" (French for "glass") to account for Cinderella's admittedly uncomfortable footwear. This theory has been widely discredited now. Most scholars believe Perrault intended glass slippers as Cinderella's footwear. Perrault's version has a more humane ending than many versions of the tale with Cinderella finding husbands for her sisters. The sisters are left poor, blind, maimed, or even dead in many versions of the tale.

The Grimm Brothers' German version, known as Aschenputtel, or Ash Girl, does not have a fairy godmother. The heroine plants a tree on her mother's grave from which all of the magical help appears in the form of a white dove and gifts. At the end, the stepsisters' eyes are pecked by birds from the tree to punish them for their cruelty. Perrault's version is considerably more forgiving than this version.

In modern times, the tale of Cinderella has inspired countless picture books, musicals, novels, and dreams of little girls. I have included some of the versions on the Tales Similar to Cinderella Page. Versions of the tale have been collected and printed from Vietnam, Italy, Egypt, Australia, and the Algonquin Indians, to name a few.

I felt so productive today. =) I organised all my books into subject piles, and finished my Spanish (though I've yet to memorize it), and I just felt so on top of everything. Then I didn't finish my History and I just kinda . . . came to a stop on the work front.

I was going to take this picture earlier but I slept in til 12 and was then working all afternoon. My Dad told me we were going out for dinner and I realised I had about 45minutes to take and edit this. That streak of soot on my toes was completely by accident but it worked so I left it. This is our "best room" and we only really use it at Christmas and when entertaining so I was terrified I'd walk soot all over the carpet, (I had enough sense to bring a black towel with me).

I only had a short time to get dressed to go out so I was trying to wash all the soot off my feet so I called my brother to help me. He asked what had happened and I told him I'd been standing in a fireplace, to which he commented on how weird I was. I replied that it just made life more interesting when I was around. Which is very true.

Anyway, dinner was awesome and fun - we went to the local Indian restaurant. I don't like curries at all, but it's a nice place. My brother wanted to prove how hard he was so he ate two chillies in a row and I thought he was going to cry they were so hot. It was hilarious.

Story time:

Once there was a widower who for his second wife, married a proud and haughty woman. She had two daughters, who were equally vain. By his first wife, he had a beautiful young daughter who was a girl of unparalleled goodness and sweet temper. The Stepmother and her daughters forced the first daughter to complete all the housework. When the girl had done her work, she sat in the cinders, which caused her to be called "Cinderella". The poor girl bore it patiently, but she dared not tell her father, who would have scolded her; his wife controlled him entirely.

One day the Prince invited all the young ladies in the land to a ball so he could choose a wife. Cinderella dreamedof going to the dance, but her stepsisters taunted her by saying a maid could never attend a ball.

Left at home, Cinderella cried in despair. Her Fairy Godmother magically appeared and vowed to assist Cinderella in attending the ball. She turned a pumpkin into a coach, mice into horses, a rat into a coachman, and lizards into footmen. She then turned Cinderella's rags into a beautiful gown, complete with a delicate pair of glass slippers. The Godmother told her to return before midnight for the spells would be broken.

At the ball, the entire court was entranced by Cinderella, especially the Prince, who never left her side. When the clock struck 12 Cinderella left the ball.

When another ball was held the next evening, Cinderella again attended with her Godmother's help. The Prince became even more entranced. However, this evening she lost track of time and left only at the final stroke of midnight, losing one of her glass slippers on the steps of the palace in her haste. The Prince chased her, but the guards had seen only a simple country wench leave. The Prince kept the slipper and vowed to find and marry the girl to whom it belonged. Meanwhile, Cinderella kept the other slipper, which had not disappeared when the spell had broken.

The Prince tried the slipper on all the young women in the land, and when he arrived at Cinderella's villa, the Stepsisters tried in vain. When Cinderella asked if she might try, the Stepsisters taunted her. Naturally, the slipper fit perfectly, and Cinderella produced the other slipper for good measure. The Stepsisters begged for forgiveness, and Cinderella forgave them for their cruelties.

Cinderella returned to the palace where she married the Prince, and the Stepsisters also married two lords.

Cinderella put on the gown and hurried to join them. But when her Stepsisters recognized their old sash and beads, they tore Cinderella's gown to shreds. Cinderella's friends watched as she sadly wept in the garden. "It's no use," she sobbed, "Nothing will help." At that moment, bright, sparkling lights began floating and swirling around Cinderella and her Godmother appeared. This Godmother of hers, who was a Fairy, said to her, "You wish that you could go to the ball; is it not so?" "Yes," cried Cinderella, with a great sigh, "But, my wicked stepsisters tore my gown and I have nothing to wear but these nasty rags." To this her Godmother replied, "Earlier I noticed two white pigeons in a little tree on the other side of the garden, and then two turtle doves ... and then little birds of all kinds came to rest there... there must be something about that tree?" At this Cinderella excitedly ran to the tree, oh how she loved the little birds and their songs. And when she arrived she sang along, "Shake and quiver, little tree, Throw gold and silver down to me." Then the little birds threw a magnificent dress of gold and silver down to her, and slippers embroidered with silk and silver. She quickly put on the dress and went to the Ball. When she arrived, the Prince approached, took her by the hand, and danced with her. Furthermore, he would dance with no one else.

i wish it could happen like that more often.

Performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" by the Wood Street Theater Company at Cutting Hall in Palatine Illinois.

I decided to show two scenes from Cinderella, since I have two Cinderellas, and three of her outfits. In the first photo, she is admiring the pink gown the mice helped her tailor from her late mother’s dress. But later, her stepsisters tore the gown into shreds. Her fairy godmother bestowed her with the beautiful blue gown she wore to the Prince’s royal ball. 💕👩💙👱‍♂️💙

I met my mom and stepsisters in San Francisco Saturday to see "Wicked" at the Orpheum. It was very good, as everyone said it was going to be. I was more amazed by the visual aspects (set, lights, costumes, dancing) and the singing than by the plot itself. I felt like there were gaps in the plot that made a couple events seem strange and unexplained. But, it was very enjoyable!

After the play we had dinner on the wharf and walked around Pier 39 a bit. We also went to Ghiradelli's and had some chocolate ... yum! I'm totally regretting bringing some home. It was a fun night with the girls though.

This is my stepsister Lindsay in front of the carosel on Pier 39. The serious look is a joking one. I told her to look longingly into the night. We were laughing a lot right before and after this shot.

And the light fairies joined us again. :)

We had a photo shoot :)

A bug got caught in her hair and she screamed so loud that the neighbor came out cause he thought she was getting raped or something.

It was so funny :)

Completed Hopscotch quilt.

Pattern by Camille Roskelly.

fabrics are Chicopee by Denyse Schmidt and coordinating solids from a bundle i had bought from Pink Chalk Fabrics awhile back.

Modified pattern to make an 80x80 quilt, although it turned out more like 78x80". I laid the blocks out in a 15x8 pattern instead of the 11x7 pattern the pattern uses.

Quilted with a fmq meandering stitch through the triangles, but i did different patterns in the star areas though to highlight the stars.

Made as a wedding gift for my stepsister.

(My husband says we should keep it instead, LOL! I'll behave and give it away though!)

Feebee: Eh? No I'm a Blythe, Sindy are upstairs wow your feet are fantastic! Like ginormous chunks of clay.

Darling: Ha ha, thank you I guess?!

Feebee: How do you like my red shoes? Too bad you can't wear them.... unless, we chop off your heels like Cinderella's stepsisters did*. Or your toes if you prefer?

Darling: Oh my!

Sindy: (Entering the room.) Sorry I'm late, I was on the phone...

"Red Shoes" is the theme of the Blythe a Day group, February 13.

*Feebee is not being gruesome on her own accord, the original Cinderella fairy tale is very gory. Disney edited that out.

When Cinderella arrived at the palace, it was the king’s son who offered her his hand as she alighted from her golden coach. He led her into the palace to join the glittering company gathered there. Upon her entry to the ballroom there was an immediate and profound silence. Everyone stopped dancing, the musicians ceased to play, and all heads turned, so entranced was everyone with the singular beauty of the unknown newcomer. Nothing was then heard but a confused noise of, "Who is she? Do we know her? How wonderful her gown! How elegant her hairstyle! How beautiful she is!" The king himself, old as he was, could not help watching her, and telling the queen softly that it was a long time since he had seen so beautiful and lovely a creature.

‘Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper’ by Charles Perrault.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 8th of January is “portray a fairy tale”. This theme was made for me, as I love faerie tales, which were very much a part of my childhood when my beloved maternal Grandmother used to read me stories from an old book of faerie tales. Over the years, I have never lost the love, or the magic of faerie tales and these stories are as enjoyable and as fresh to me as they were when I first heard them. I now tell them to my godchildren, instilling in them the same love of old folk and faerie tales from around the world, complete with the darkness so many of them contain in their original versions. The only difficulty I faced with this theme was, out of all the things I could do, which one would I pick?

Over the last few years, I have been photographing different faerie tales I love using Playmobil characters to dramatise the tales. I have about fifty to sixty stories completed now, some of which I have uploaded to Flickr, but most have yet to see the light of day here, so I could have chosen a more obscure faerie tales like the Grimm Brothers’ “King Thrushbeard”, “the Sea Hare” or “Mother Hollie” or the Estonian faerie tale of “The Waterlily and the three Golden Spinners”, just to name a few, however I have opted for what would generally be agreed is the world’s most famous and beloved faerie tale of “Cinderella”. This is just one photograph of many that I have taken to illustrate the Grimm Brother’s version “Ashenputtel” which features no faerie godmother, although the text above comes from the more commonly known “Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper” by Charles Perrault. I do hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.

Playmobil is a line of toys produced by the Brandstätter Group, headquartered in Zirndorf, Germany. Production began in 1974. Playmobil began to be sold worldwide in 1975, and by 2009, approximately 2.2 billion Playmobil figures had been sold. The signature Playmobil toy is a 7.5 cm tall human figure with a particular smiling face. In 2006 Playmobil released three Fairy Tale Sets, including set 4213 which was a Cinderella set, which today is highly sought after. It contains four characters, all of which I have included here: Cinderella in the foreground, the king’s son in the midground to the right of Cinderella and her two stepsisters who are midground to the left of the photo. To complete her family, I have added her stepmother in the black and gold dress and her father in the cream hat with the red beard (as in the Grimm Brothers’ version, both father and stepmother play a more significant part in the tale). I have also included the king and queen and various ball guests including a joker with his yellow hat.

A wide range of accessories, buildings and vehicles, as well as many sorts of animals, are also part of the Playmobil line. Playmobil toys are produced in themed series of sets as well as individual special figures and playsets. New products and product lines developed by a 50-strong development team are introduced frequently, and older sets are discontinued. Promotional and one-off products are sometimes produced in very limited quantities. These practices have helped give rise to a sizeable community of collectors.

June (pink) and Aja (blue) were playing dress-up in their room.

Aja: I am Cinderelli and you can be the wicked stepsister.

June: No I am Cinderella and you can be Gus the mouse.

Aja: . . . I'm wearing a dress. GusGus is a boy who's wearing a top and no trousers. Improper!

June: But you're as small as a mouse.

Aja: Oh AM I? *Jumping up on the chest of drawers.*

June: Gosh!! How did you become so tall!? You must be the Queen.

Aja: Oh! Oh! Yes, I can be the wicked Queen and you can be Snow White, but pink. Hand me my mirror! I must ask it something.

June: Haha, yes mother!

Guess who takes care of the gloomy Dreary twins? Euphemia, who jumped at the chance of leaving the ugly stepsister role and go inside Dreary Manor and be spooky. She wears Sister Dreary's dress (Sister does not live here anymore) and a hat by Peggy Feltrope, who is a gifted and dedicated milliner. This hat, called Forest Floor, was created to complement the black dress and Euphemia's big forehead. Peggy had to hand dye the flowers...such amazing love for the art.

"My step-brother? You're looking for him? He has a fondness for strays and tramps of all types...maybe you should check the bus stop or the train depot. Or you could just wait here with me, he'll turn up when he runs out of cash, he always does."

I received this cute ballerina shoes some days ago. Unfortunately they did not fit on my HeeAh that well. Maybe I mod her feet just a little bit...(?)

Just like the stepsisters in Cinderella had to mod their feet XD

Now more clever and beautiful than ever before!

I've watched "Barbarella" for the very first time together with my two stepsisters when I was ten or eleven. It was Saturday (back then, I spent every weekend at my father's). My Dad and stepmother sometimes visited friends on a Saturday night, and apparently we three girls were deemed old enough – we are very close in age, my older stepsister is only 10 month older and and my younger stepsister 6 months younger than me – to stay "Home Alone". I don't remember what the parental orders for our "girl's night in" were, but I'm absolutely sure that watching late night sci-fi movies wasn't included on the "OK list" – so that was precisely what we did ;) And boy were we terrified by that scene at the beginning of the movie, where Barbarella crash-lands on Tau Ceti's 16th planet and gets attacked by those nasty children with their killer dolls with those razor-sharp metal teeth.

So what does innocent sellotape in a tape dispenser has to do with a freaky sci-fi movie from the love and peace era (love, mostly, when it comes to Barbarella)? Well, first of all this is double-sided adhesive tape – which isn't nearly as innocent as one might think. It can be very handy, yes, but only after you've managed to handle it without getting stuck to every single surface where you don't want it to stick. And then... I wasn't even sure what to expect when I decided to photograph the tape dispenser, the spikiest thing I could find at home. I only thought that it might look interesting with those arrows printed on the edge of the tape. But don't you agree that the spikes of that small (1,4 cm / 0,55 inches wide) cutter knife look like teeth and the arrows and that rectangle look like eyes and a nose? And there they were, those nasty dolls... ;)

Processed entirely in DXO PhotoLab4 with some extra local adjustments on the "teeth" ; I've also again applied a film simulation in DXO FilmPack, Agfa Precisa 100, and I still tweaked the colours a little. It's a single shot; I've also tried some focus stacking, because the arrows look interesting with those tiny printing dots, but since it's all about the spikes this time, I thought I'd leave them blurred – I think it also adds a sense of motion and of that crazy frenzy of that doll scene.

HMM, Everyone, have a nice week ahead and stay safe!

Anna (left, chin up) and Heiress are actually stepsisters, and get into disagreements sometimes. I think Heiress is often the instigator, but I don't know what's her problem. She and Anna twist their necks around each other and make funny noises.
