Enjoy drift boat fishing on the world renowned Salmon River in Pulaski NY for hard fighting salmon or steelhead during the splendor of the fall, winter and spring seasons.

Whether it's trophy sized steelhead or salmon that you're after, I am dedicated to introducing both new and experienced anglers to the exciting world of freshwater fishing.

For novices, I place emphasis on Fly/Spin fishing skill and supplement the day with knots, fly/bait selection, fish habitats, and prey species. For the more experienced sportsman, I'll work with you to hone your fishing skills. I guarantee a rewarding experience.

I have a firm belief 100 % of my energy and time should be focused on you and helping you attain your goals, during our time together and not fishing along side you during this time.

I am a thoroughly proficient and professional year-round fly/spin fishing guide with 35 + years of fresh and salt water experience.

At 16 feet, my 285 pound guide drift boat is comfortable and a very stable platform . It is outfitted with a propane heater to keep you nice and toasty on even the coldest days. While you can Spin or Fly fish from the drift boat, I will often stop to let clients wade and fish a particularly productive run on the Salmon River NY. When the Steelhead or Salmon are concentrated in particular locations wading is the preferred option. At other times a drift boat is the only way to get to the fish. While I will give booking anglers a recommendation, you may want to experience one method over another. All you have to do is ask.

I'm a full-time professional fly/spin fishing guide with over 35 years of experience.

During the Fall, Winter, and Spring I run drift boat trips on the World Class Salmon River, Pulaski N.Y. using fly/spin and floats for Steelhead, Brown Trout, Coho, Atlantic's and King Salmon.

September through April

The Salmon River is located in Pulaski NY on Lake Ontario's eastern shore, 30 miles north of Syracuse. Its reputation for large runs of Salmon, Steelhead and incredible average size of all species is unsurpassed by any other fishery in New England.

September 1 - October 30

Tackle busting King Salmon averaging 10-20 lbs. will amaze you with their freight train runs. Trying to harness the raw power of a 12 lb Coho Salmon running in 20 different directions in a blink of an eye will keep you on your toes (and hopefully not on your back!)

October 15 - November

Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch. They have entered the river to spawn and will weight from 3-10 pounds. While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.

October 20 - May 1

Steelhead 8-15 lbs. The Fall Steelhead is without a doubt, one of the hardest fighting Fish that swims in the Salmon River NY. They'll take you into your backing in seconds, then jump start your heart with tail walking antics that will live in your memory forever.

Winter - This is one of my favorite Drift Boat Guide Fishing times of the year. With colder temperatures the crowds disappear. Steelhead continue to come into the river from the lake. A winter Drift Boat trip aboard our heated Drift Boat is a great way to learn the river and experience it's beauty.

The end of February, March and April are great Steelhead Fishing days as new Fish move into and out of the river on a daily basis. As the river temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead. Often, sight fishing is possible as they move into the shallows.

We can Spin or Fly Fish for Salmon or Steelhead either by wading or using the Drift Boat..

I invite you to join me and enjoy what is an unquestionably one of the finest fresh water fisheries in the eastern United States.

Randy, I just wanted to thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge to make our trip an unbelievable experience for us. With me having 8 to 9 hookups, and my friend Tim with somewhere between 5 to 6 that is more fish on in a single day than some people have for an entire season. I'm a true believer in that hot spot on "Pucker Brush Creek :)

As a matter of fact Tim and I went back on our own the next day and the fish were there waiting for us just like you said they would be. Again we had a combined count of over 10 hookups and Tim had the hot hand that day with his 6 weight fly rod. Our only regret was that we did not have enough days left to explore some of the other high percentage areas you showed us as we had to go back to work sometime.

Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks?:) Tim and I have been coming up there for over 15 years, and yet we still learned a few valuable lessons from you, thanks again. I'm just sorry that the season is almost winding down, definitely want to get back up there for another trip.

I would highly recommend you to anyone, beginner or experienced steelheader, it's the combination of little things and techniques that make all the difference in the world. Feel free to pass on my contact information if you need any references for anglers, I would be more than happy to vouch for your professionalism, knowledge, and stream courtesy to fellow anglers anytime.

Thank You, Ted

Randy,

Every time I go fishing, the optimist in me says "This might be the day." Athletes pray for days like this, hoping they play in "the zone." I think fishermen do too. Surely, this is what keeps many of us thrashing the water with a piece of string. I can count on one hand the number of days when this has happened. Two of them have been with you. The first was two years ago today, Oct. 8, when I hooked 40 or 50 fish, including a 35 lb male king that now sits above my fireplace as an reminder of that one remarkable day of fishing. The other was last Friday. Not only did I land a pair of nice Kings, I also caught my first Cohos, a beautiful male brown and three fall run steelhead, my first grand slam on the Salmon River. All told, I had maybe 20 hookups, while my buddy Myles had almost as many and landed cohos, a brown and several steelhead. It wasn't as if this was a great day on the river. I saw many long faces and shaking heads as other anglers came up empty, lost lead and flies to the river bottom and called it quits by midday. The credit for my experience is all yours. I know there are many fishermen who can work the Salmon River and catch plenty of fish, especially when a run is on. I can do it on my own sometimes. But putting it all together when the fishing is slow as you did is a testimony to your skill, knowledge and hard work. Looking forward to my next trip with you and the chance to yell "Fish On"!

Regards, Jim

Thanking you for your many kind and generous words! My head almost didn't fit thru the front door after those :) Randy

Guest Testimonial's:

A Sampling of Fishing Reports from some of last month's Steelhead trips on the Salmon River in Pulaski NY:

I think I canceled or rescheduled more trips last month due to unsafe and uncomfortable (driving here and fishing) weather (wind chill) than I actually worked. Thats normal and I'd rather have you be comfortable and safe than take any chances of a driving accident getting here or going home, frost bite while fishing or anything else. For this guide, you come first, before the almighty dollar :)

-

One of my better trips recently:

My 2 guest's experienced their first time Steelhead fishing. They came back amazed at the numbers of fish we played with but most importantly, the knowledge they gained. For them, the fish were second to achieving a rock solid Steelhead fishing foundation on which to build. That was their main goal, to which we succeeded! I think we played with about 10-11 Steelies for the day. Just icing on the cake. :)

-

My slowest trips recently:

My 2 guest's were VERY VERY experienced. We had three or four on and off reeeel quick. One that pulled hard and fast before breaking off. And landed One. Ouch! Never know :)

-

Hit Steelhead in 3 out of 5 spots today. Played with about 8 total for the day. The 2 spots we didn't hit any fish in were only fished for about 5-10 minutes.

Im sure there were fish there, and we would have found some if we had stayed longer, but we were only looking for some McDonald's fish. (Fast and easy:)

-

My guest's from yesterday decided to fish a 1/2 day instead of our full because of the impending sleet, snow, rain and lot's of freezing rain in the forecast. They got out of town before it really hit which made me feel better.

In our 1/2 days fishing we tangled with 5 Steelhead. Not bad! Yesterday we went on a Nantucket sleigh ride. We gave chase in the boat and were surrounded with a very narrow river, fast water, log jam's, fish running under the boat in about every direction, boulders, fish moving from one side of the boat to the other, my oar blades, rapids, tree's, you name it. We had to zig and zag our way through this obstacle course with a mad and dashing Steelhead on. Pheeew! Finally that steelhead had had enough and gave up. It was netted nicely off the side of the drift boat as we drifted down the river. Talk about a Chinese fire drill! It would have been a hilarious show to watch as I tried to run the oar's, anchor, missing all the obstacles and net while keeping everyone safe and upright in the boat all at once. :)

What a fight, what an adrenaline rush, DAM, I love this job!

-

Winter Steelhead Fishing Tip:

The fish today in one Winter holding pool did not want any natural looking aquatic insect flies and would ONLY hit glow bug's in pink and cream. (We did not try bait or any other egg colors) In a transitional holding spot they only wanted the aquatics.

After working the entire hole with aquatics with no bites? I tied on a glow bug in Pink and on the first cast, it was hammered "Fish On", Baby! The second rod doubled over in the hole within 5 minutes of changing to a cream glow bug. Boy, it sure pay's to have a pretty good understanding of entomology and baitology on this river. It also paid dividends to be able to listen to what the fish were telling us related to their eating habit's and adjust. I knew we had a minimum of 10-15 steelhead in this spot that wanted nothing to do with our insect fly offering. By paying close attention, we were able to fool a couple before pulling the anchor. 2 more fish came from the next transitional lye before calling it a day. :)

-

Slow day today - Played with a coupe of fish. Worked on presentation most of the day. Nobody on the river today due to the ice forecast last night and this morning. Not bad at all. Very comfortable and no ice to deal with.

-

Winter Steelhead Fishing Tip: Ice in your guides?

The best stuff to use is either silicone spray or Ice Off Paste, sold at most tackle shops. Whitakers has it. Works on both fly and spin rods. The paste works the best if you put it on the night before. Re-apply as needed while fishing.

-

My guest today had 4-5 goals that we wanted to achieve. A better, complete, expert analysis and understanding of flies, tying flies, reading water, presentation, Steelhead strategies, rigging, how does the lower and higher water effect the fish, were do the fish lay in all the holes, high water current breaks, where to stand in every hole, how to access each hole, advanced rigging and presentation, stream etiquette, where to cross the river safely, how to rig and present a fly-bait while sight fishing to the Bucks in the Spring, Spring strategies, Winter strategies, where to find the Bucks in the Spring and lastly and least important were to catch fish.

Ken only had 4-5 goals but I covered all of the above and much more. This is a normal day for me. We hit some fish while completely and thoroughly achieving all of Kens goals plus some! :)

We spent time in each and every hole over a 3 mile distance. Approx. 40 or more spot's. (Boy, my throat was sore at days end from all the talking, nice change from the usual :)

We saw fish with the help of todays sun. Saw a fair number of fish that were in a transitional state, moving up the river and briefly holding in the transitional lyes.

Salmon River NY Fishing Mail Bag: Guest Testimonial

Randy, Just a note of thanks for our day of fishing. I've returned several times since and have hooked a lot of steelhead each time out. I've been working on my fly patterns and have some I really like - I'm looking forward to having my son, Daniel, fish with you in a couple years. That will be a great day for me to take pictures. Hal Fuller.

-

Randy, Thanks for all the help yesterday and the sight fishing adventure. Went back to the hole you showed me and 3rd cast, landed a 7lb female. Got her on a fly that you showed me and that I changed a little. Overall an awesome day! Thanks again. Ken

Notice the fly fishing angler behind me is hooked up also as these Blue Fish ran the shallow sand flats 50 feet in front of us while we sight fished for them. They were migrating past us to the North as they do each Spring.

Got the blues? If not, you should ;)

Salmon River Pulaski NY Jan. 1 Steelhead Fishing Report:

Even though Im on vacation, I wanted to share with all of you what happened today in a 2 hour period while fishing the lower river. Looked over the short bridge for slush and was happy to see that it was clearing up. I met Ray at 10 A.M. in the D.S.R. parking lot and broke trail to the stairs. Noticed that a number of deer and turkey had already packed the snow down for us.

Went directly to some prime Chrome real estate and on my 3rd cast with an orange egg sack on 6lb. test tippet my line stopped in the middle of the drift and the rod began to shake. Hhhmmm- I wonder what this means. Turns out it was a very bright, fresh, Steelhead of about 8 lb's. Ray missed one and I hit nothing for the next half hour with eggs, noticed fish porpasing in the hole as will as fish rolling off our main line. We left for the --- hole.

-

As we walked across the river we noticed the water was a bit deeper and running a tad faster than a normal 285 cfs. Due to the shelf ice on the edges of the river and anchor ice on the bottom the water flow was actually being concentrated or compressed.( Please keep this in mind when wading the lower river) Another safety tip to remember is that beneath the shelf ice that you are standing on, it could be knee deep or deeper, so it pays to know your water. Ray who is pictured above is on shelf ice that is over thigh deep water.

At the edge of the ice it's over your waist. How do I know? ( We will save that story for another time!)

-

With-in a couple of the first few cast's I had another one on. This one again was so bright that I was glad I had my sunglasses on to keep the suns reflection off the silvery sides of the steelhead from blinding me. The biggest problem we had (if you can call it that) was how to land a fish when you were restricted from approaching the edge of the shelf ice. Nether of us carried a net so we finally broke away at the ice in the tail so that we might have a shot at landing one.

-

After a I hooked a couple more, Ray asked what pound test I was using. Turns out that Ray was fishing a little heavier than me and when he dropped down on his 3rd cast his rod went a shaking!

-

Ray lands an 8 lb. male with a nice hooked jaw. (Fish was released) Ray got his on a pink egg sack.

-

From the -- Hole down it's locked up tight with shelf ice and unfishable.

-

It always pays to experiment with all aspects of you rigging, egg sack colors, flies, etc. Orange and Pink were the productive colors of our egg sacks today. I could not get a touch on the normally productive blue goo.

-

By noon, the sun was out and it had warmed to what seemed to be the warmest it's been in a month. (30 degrees ?) We were both actually over dressed for these temp's, if you can believe that. It was interesting that as the temp's rose, so did the amount of anchor ice floating on the surface of the water. It made the fishing impossible so we both left after 2 hours of fishing and the knowledge we had gained. In 2 hours and 2 holes fished, I had 6 fish on and could of landed 4 with a net.. I'm not bragging, but this is what you can expect when you time it just right and the fish gods smile upon you.

Stay tuned,

Randy

1/24 Salmon River Pulaski NY Steelhead Drift Boat Guide Fishing Report:

Our main goal today was to learn all the prime holding waters of the D.S.R. (Lower River). After we hit our 3rd fish in a row out of a small depression in the bottom of the river, I told Andy that since he wanted to learn all the holes we should leave this spot. He changed his mind real quick and decided a few more fish would be an O.K. exchange for learning a few more holes. So we stayed and hooked up another real quick. (He-he) and then it was off for more fun and excitement.

Today we fished hard, only hitting the most productive lies in 285 cfs.

Very light fishing pressure. Did notice a big lack of fish in this area compared to the month of Dec. Most fish have pushed out, up river with a few freshies trickling in daily.

Andy and I had a blast having almost the entire river to ourselves. Not only did Andy learn a lot, but also got into some reeeeeeel burners, too!

-

Andy works the lil -- hole down to -- and is 3 for 6 for the day. All dime bright freshies! ( All fish Released )

-

1/25 Salmon River NY Steelhead Drift Boat Guide Fishing Report:

Same ol same hole - nothing has changed from the last few post's. The fish ( Steelhead 8-12 lb's) are in and waiting for you. Middle to lower river holding the most. D.S.R. has cooled off.

Come on up and join us, wont you?

-

Guest Steelhead Fishing Testimonial:

Randy,

Thank you for a truly great outing. Basically, I knew nothing about the river - in previous trips would usually end up somewhere in Altmar, following other fishermen around like a sheep. Now, I feel confident that I can approach the river with a strategy and a technique that will at least afford me the opportunity to identify and access "fishy" water and present my fly to fish for as long and as naturally as possible. Additionally, we studied numerous slots and runs that I never would've even considered stumbling around on my own. As I learned, it really is as precise as fitting a key into a lock.

-

I cannot stress enough how invaluable this experience was, from the standpoint of a guy that lives a couple hours away, and simply cannot devote the time necessary to develop on my own a comfort level with such a complex fishery.

I hope you will be able to find some room for me in March...I promise it will take me less than half a day to figure out that "straight out in front of you" means straight out in front of me.

-

By the way, I think I pulled my hamstring sprinting after that last fish. Thanks again.

Andy (See 1/24 Report)

Salmon River Pulaski NY Steelhead Drift Boat Guide Spin Fly Fishing Report Update:

Every normal type of habitat for this time of year, fish's life cycle, water flow, current breaks, water temperature is with Steelhead and Brown Trout from the top of the Salmon River to the bottom. There literally there is no bad place to fish presently.

The simplest way to explain this is everyday of late, as I drift down the river in the boat, every single spot is producing fish, top to bottom of the river! Ye-Haa!!

My guest's were in the 10% of the anglers that catch 90% of the Steelhead twice last week, with the other two days being ok #'s. The 2 ok average #'s of steelhead were attributed to the fish being in a transitional stage and being more spread out from the heat to the deeper pools.

-

(Photo)

Rick (son of dad Dick K. photo'd below) w/ an exciting steelhead. Congrats!!

-

Guess we just got lucky this week ;)

Monday - Enjoyed my first scheduled day off in the last few month's.

-

Tuesday - 500 cfs - My 2 guest's landed 3 steelhead (6-8-12 lb'r) out of 9 total played with!

My new guest was visually shaking with excitement and adrenaline racing up his spine after fighting and landing his first ever steelhead. He said, Randy, this is the BEST fishing day of my life! I smiled in return and remembered fondly my first fish on the Salmon River and the excitement of it all.

We captured the entire fight and landing of this steelhead on video. It was fun to watch and listen to it in replay as we slowly drifted down the river in the drift boat on "The River, where Memories are Made."

-

Wed.

6 reeeeeeeeel scream'n drag's singing the fisherman's national anthem steelhead were played with today off the .com drift boat by my two guest's. Just another day at the office.

-

Thurs.

Had to work hard for every fish and we picked away at them. Noticed less fish in the heat then previous days, the fish are transitioning to the Winter lyes. Water temp. was approx. 40 degrees.

We tied into 4 steelhead today - Father and son sharing a qaulity day of fond fishing memories and fun.

Tyler took about 5-6 pictures of his dad's Trophy Steelhead that he kept for the dinner table. I suggested that w/ the holidays just around the corner he could make a photo colleague framed picture and make it into a holiday gift for his dad to hang on the wall.

-

Friday

Noticed MOST of the bank anglers having success in ALL the normal spots. Bent rods, scream'n reels, smiles and laughter abound! I'd recommend coming over, up or down to fish.

I'm seeing about 75% bright silver steelhead and approx. 25% darker steelhead. They darken a tad once they have been in the river 3-4 weeks. Thats how you can tell how fresh or old they are.

Changed fishing strategy today, listened to the fish and was rewarded w/ an amazing 14 steelhead tangled with for my first timers. They flew in from the West coast where they fish a lot. They had always heard story's about this place and decided to give a fishing try. They were not disappointed. I think we well be seeing them again.

Flattering Drift Boat Fishing Testimonial's for Steelhead and Salmon Guide Randy Jones on the Salmon River NY

-

To quote a Drift Boat Guide that I know, our trip yesterday was O U T S T A N D I N G, in every sense of the word. Although I live just an hour away from the Salmon River NY, I have only fished the Salmon River in Pulaski NY for four years. I feel very comfortable with my Salmon "catching" expertise, but the elusive Steelhead is a different story. I am still at the low end of the learning curve when it comes to chromers. Yesterday we made some major progress on the learning curve, correcting some things I was doing wrong, and fine tuned some other points. PLUS we hit ten Steelhead and landed two. When "out of staters" come to the Salmon River NY, they have to pack a whole season into two or three days---well, yesterday, I packed a whole season of experiences, thrills of victory and the agony of losing a 16# Steelhead at the net in one very enjoyable, eight hour Guide Drift Boat trip down the Salmon River Pulaski NY. I appreciate your patience, guidance, and sense of humor.

Thank you for an outstanding day.

-

Randy,

What a great day, just when I thought I knew a little something about steelhead fishing I had to fish with you. You really are a class act. I really appreciate you sharing your expertise and patience as well as some of your "honey" holes with me. I would encourage any steelhead fisherman, novice or expert, to fish with a guide even if it's just once, and if they can get Drift Boat Guide Randy Jones they're in for a great day. There is so much to learn about this sport and you can trim years off the "learning curve" by fishing with a real pro such as yourself. Thanks again for the fun and truly a learning fishing experience. And thanks for not mentioning that "hog" that snuck through the hole in your net.

Quality Fishing Testimonial for the Salmon River NY catching Steelhead or Salmon with Drift Boat Guide Randy Jones

-

It may be difficult to understand the term World Class Fishing until you have been there. But perhaps this will help!

-

Randy,

Thank you for several memorable trips this year on the Salmon River NY. The highlight of the year was definitely the outing on the Salmon River during September. Never have I experienced such numbers of large and aggressive Salmon in all my 45 years of fishing. I estimate we had over 60 hook-ups on King Salmon and caught and released 12, two of which were between 30 and 35 pounds. Close behind was the spring drift boat trip for Steelhead on the remote stretch of Pucker-brush Creek. Seeing over 2 dozen Steelhead off the drift boat in a one mile stretch, with no one else around, reminded me of Alaska. After those experiences, I decided traveling to the Northwest Territories for lake trout and grayling or to Labrador for brook trout are a thing of the past and I will concentrate on the quality of fishing available in New York State. If you ever need a recommendation, I would be pleased to provide one.

The following are general and depend on temps and water levels:

June - August

Skamania (a summer run strain of Steelhead)

Atlantic Salmon in small numbers

Chinook also start to show as early as July on high water but number grow with good water conditions in late August.

-

September

Chinook and Coho start coming in in good numbers

Steelhead start coming in in decent numbers

A few Browns start showing

-

October

This is the prime month for Chinook. They come in in large numbers now.

Coho are also coming in in good numbers.

Steelhead really begin showing in good numbers now

Browns also start coming in in decent numbers but Nov. is peak for them.

-

November

Most of the Chinook are dead or near dead but a few fresh stragglers do come in. While the Coho run is over for the most part, they remain in decent shape and hold up longer than the Chinook. This is a great time for Steelheaders as the Salmon crowds are gone and the numbers of Steelhead are normally good.

The Brown fishing is also pretty good, although not as good as tribs more to the west.

-

Dec - Feb.

This is obviously the coldest period. The fishing can be great for Steelhead depending on water temps and levels. You are best off fishing from late morning through the afternoon at this time of year as the suns rays help to warm the water slightly, making the fish a bit more active. Browns are often caught this time of year as well.

-

March - April

The water starts warming and the Steelhead start coming in in greater numbers. The spawn begins as the temps rise and often a small run of Browns come in to feed on bait fish and Steelhead & Sucker eggs. Don't be surprised if you hook a Chrome freight train that takes you for a ride. There are SPRING run Chinook in small numbers that show up at this time. If only the State would process some of these fish to build the spring numbers.

-

May

This is a GREAT time to target drop-back Steelhead. These are spawned out Steelhead who are now eating everything in sight as they work their way back to the lake. The numbers of fish caught in a day at this time of year can be amazing. The first Skamania and Atlantic's can be caught at this time as well.

-

Hope this helps a bit . . .

Holy Cow! - Ramblings from this Salmon River NY Steelhead Fishing Drift Boat Guide:

My guest's have been playing with lots of fish, everyday off the drift boat, in every spot, on the Slam'n Salmon River. Guide Tip - We have predominately been fishing Habitat that is a "Combination" of Prime Transitional Holding and Prime Non-Transitional Holding.

-

Lot's of folks out enjoying this great weather and fishing. Smiles abound! Local economy getting it's largest influence of business for the year. From the waitress's, bartenders, the guy who pumps your gas, the convenient store clerk's, tackle shops, lodges, guides, fish cleaners, etc...

We all thank you, for spending your valuable fishing $$ up here!!

Few anglers going for a swim while fighting there fish. Watched an excited youngster lose his fish on the bank and then dive into the shallow water. Wrapping his arms and legs around the fish as he rolled around in the water and happily giving it a bear hug :)

Lots of fish around! Thousand's of Salmon have entered the Salmon River NY over the last 2 month and are spread out from the top all the way to the bottom of the Slam'n Salmon River, Altmar - Pulaski NY.

Load's of fish in the Estuary, stacking up, entering, running and spreading out over the entire length of the Slam'n Salmon River. With many many more to come!

Everyday in the lower river anglers have had either a dead, slow, ok, not bad, steady, pretty good or reeeeeelly good # of Salmon (w/ a few Trout) entering the River. Everyday over the entire length of the Slam'n Salmon River these King Salmon, Coho Salmon, Steelhead and Brown Trout are in 3 specific places.

-

Lil Guide Tip: (specific places)

Approx. % of fish my guest's and I are visually seeing and counting in each type of Habitat, over most of the river, daily, off my drift boat.

Transitional Stage - Where the fish rest at temporarily while in a transitional mode (running the river). Lately, evening's have been more productive then morning's.

20% Prime Transitional Holding - Where the fish will hold for the entire day (usually mid-day) after they have stopped running that morning.

-

75% Prime Non-Transitional Holding - Where they will sit for an extended period of time (days and sometimes an entire month) before there biological clock tells them to find a mate and special rock.

5% on that special rock. Seeing a lil more activity everyday.

My two clients for today were amazed at the #'s of King Coho Salmon, Brown Trout and Steelhead they fought! They both were rewarded with a Grand Slam!

A Grand Slam is when you land a King Salmon, Coho salmon, Brown Trout and a Steelhead in a single day. Congrats gentleman! Another fine fishing day of many on the Salmon River Pulaski NY.

There is only one thing better than today's fishing, I know at your age it might be hard to remember back that far? yuk-yuk

If you arrive and the air temp's are in the low 20’s for the high then here are a few tip's to staying warm and catching some fish!

-

1. The days of me fishing a full 8 hours with these air temps are almost over, unless there is sun and no wind. It is actually very pleasant under these conditions.

-

2. Only fish the most productive part of the day. Normally this occurs during the warmest part. 4 hr's is sufficient between 11-3.

-

3. Fish spots where the sun is shinning on you, instead of fishing spots where you are in the shadow of a cliff or tree's.

-

(Photo)

Another client with a Female Steelhead. Both smil'n!

-

4. Where dark clothing so the suns warm rays can be absorbed into your clothing.

-

5. Use a spinning rod. I'm a fly addict, but when it's cold, I love my spinning rod! Hands can stay warm in gloves, guides ice up less frequently, my bait or fly is in the water more due to the mechanical nature of a spinning rod which allows me more chances of hooking up.

-

6. By yourself a pair of fleece wind blocker fingerless gloves with a pull over mitt. I'm out in this weather a lot, and these gloves are all I wear, they are the best! I also reeely enjoy wool gloves with a pull over mitten. Even if wet, they still insulate. I normally carry 2-3 extra pairs of gloves as I hate wet-cold hands in the Winter time.

-

7. Put heat pads in your gloves and underneath your arch in wader boots. These are sold at most tackle shops in the area.

-

8. Treat yourself to a pair of 4-5 mil neoprene boot foot waders preferably with a polypropylene wool insert that wraps your feet or a Thinsulate rating of approx. 1200 or more in the boot. You work hard so you deserve it - right? Make sure they are 1-2 sizes bigger than normal as air circulation is key to keeping warm. My feet and body actually perspire on even the coldest of days and when standing in the freezing water all day! If you walk any great distances then these are not the best as you will perspire like crazy and then be damp all day. A lot of us full-time Winter guides use Cabelas (hunting?) waders that used to sell for around $200.

-

9. Wear high tech. under garments that insulate as well as breath. I use Orvis and have found them to work great!

-

10. Being in a drift boat with a big heater is always a treat.

-

11. You all know about eating right. Stay away from things that take along time to digest. I find a nice pasta dish works for me. A good breakfast and lunch are also an important ingredient to staying warm in the afternoon.

-

12. I find that when my toes and fingers start to sting, it's time to actively start moving them and think of warmer places. Going for a quick walk along the river is one of the best ways to get that feeling back. The trick is to never let your feet go numb. It can take all night to get the feeling back into them. If they start to sting, then thats your clue to take some kind of action. With stocking foot waders, where your laces lose or what I call "a sloppy fit". This also helps with blood circulation. Once, I stumbled into the river water when I let my feet go numb. Can't feel them and its easy to fall.

-

13. Take breaks to your car or local restaurant to warm up.

-

(Photo)

I think it was a toasty -2 degrees outside when this picture was taken. Approx. 16 lb's. Fish kept for Ken's dinner table. Congrats Ken!

-

14. Keep moving from spot to spot only hitting the most productive areas in each hole.

-

15. Start the morning off with a nice long walk to one of your favorite spots. There is nothing like a little exercise to warm you up. This warmth will also stick with you for awhile.

-

16. Make sure you have on some good solid spikes, chains or korkers on your wading boots to keep you steady on your feet while on ice or slippery rocks. Felt is not enough.

-

Hope this helps a lil, Randy

Drift Boat Guide Steelhead Fishing Report

We continue to see reeeeel good Steelhead fishing on the Salmon River, NY. This past week we averaged between 12 and 16 Steelhead per day. Ye-haa! I'd obviously recommend coming up! Besides anglers with drift boat guides, Im also seeing plenty of shore angler's finding a good number of fish also. That's always nice to see! Every spot that myself and other's are fishing, are with Steelhead. We still have Steelhead in transition, so those spots are still producing nicely.

Your Salmon River NY Drift Boat Steelhead Fishing Guide,

Randy Jones

Randy,

I just wanted to take the time to say THANK YOU for a most excellent trip yesterday. Having fished the Lake Ontario tributaries for nearly 20 years and guiding for 10 of those, yesterday was by far the best fishing I have ever experienced. You really put us on the fish, IT WAS AMAZING. In two decades of fishing my biggest coho was 18 pounds. I caught FOUR coho yesterday that beat it (18.5lb, 19lb, 20lb, and 22lb). Our Norwegian guest Geir Sivertzen had the time of his life and will remember this day forever with a big smile on his face. I caught and released more coho yesterday than I have in the last 4 years combined! What else can I say . . . a grand slam (35lb king, 17lb steelie, 7lb brown, 22lb coho), all three of us hooked up simultaneously at least 4 times, having to net fish two at a time, Bob, Geir and myself landing 50 out of 85 fish AND all on fly rods!!! Yes, our arms are SORE!! We simply cannot thank you enough for sharing your expertise and helping us to have a most memorable day. You are truly one of the standouts on our Mustad Guide Prostaff.

Sincerely,

Steelhead fished last Thursday with Drift Boat Guide Randy Jones on the Salmon River NY. We had hook-ups on Steelhead all day long. This was very exciting Fly Fishing for these beasts, many took me deep into my backing. We landed 3 steelhead with one being in the 17 pound range. Randy is a hard-working guide who can put you onto fish. I highly recommend him if you are new to steelhead fishing. He loves to teach and share his vast knowledge of the Salmon River.

-

That's great Ross! I'm glad to hear that you had a successful Drift Boat Fly Fishig Guide Trip with Randy. We are proud to have Randy on our Prostaff here at Mustad. He is truly a great guide, teacher and person. You just gotta love those steelie's. Fishing with him back in September I landed 2 coho's that would have broken the current IGFA fly rod tippet records for 8lb and 12lb. He really put us into fish and taught our guest a great deal.

Jeff P.

There ARE so many entry-level fly fishermen who are constantly trying to improve their skills in this sport. Clearly the more time on the Salmon River with some one like you can help to reduce the experimentation and personal favorites or approaches that many times doesn’t relate to catching these magnificent fish.

-

Hi Randy,

I Just wanted to drop you a note to say thanks for an awesome day on the River. Alex and I appreciated you sharing your knowledge of the Salmon River NY but more importantly helping us hook into some Steelhead. As soon as the pictures come back alex will have his lone Steelhead plastered on the walls in his office and in his living room. In addition I would like to commend you on your professionalism. You do an excellent job promoting the sport. I look forward to scheduling another Drift Boat Guide trip with you next spring. Thanks, Mark

Guest Testimonial:

Randy,

Thanks for yet another great day on the river Sept 18th with my brother. There's a reason I've been fishing with you for the last 8 years and keep on coming back. You are simply the best guide on the river bar none. You should have heard my brother on the drive home telling me how much he learned from you yesterday. He really appreciated your time and patience and how you carefully explained the ins 'n outs of how to consistently catch salmon. He had not fished the river in over 10 years and, after setting up in the dark and receiving the Randy Jones crash course on salmon fishing, he proceeded to hook up on the SECOND CAST!! Then another 2 in the first 30 minutes of fishin'!! Yeehaa!! After years of fishing with you, my answer to how many hookups I had that day is always "I have no idea" or "I can't remember". Usually give up after reaching double digits...

-

Thanks again Randy. See you in November for some cold weather steely fishin' (the best kind) and again for some spring time sight fishin'.

-

There's lots of guides who can give you a tour of the river, but only one who knows river rocks by their first names and can really teach you how to fish. I'm still taking classes and learn'n' every trip!! Love the topics on your site about future ramblings. Can't wait!

Sincerely, Ron

-

Thank you all for your words of encouragement, kind words and continued support. Ill continue to do my best in sharing what I've learned through experience, experimentation, borrowed ideas and taught techniques.

Stay tuned for more entertainingly informative and mildly educational reports and articles on this never-ending virtual fishing trip with your host Randy "The Yankee Angler" and friends.

I sincerely hope that what little I've been able to share with you will help you along the path to more enjoyable, safe, knowledgeable fishing.

Thanks for stopping in and spending your valuable internet fishing time here :)

Hope your all enjoying this great fishing!

Salmon River NY Guide and Author Randy Jones

Randy: Bill and I had a great time with you useing the Drift Boat in the Douglaston Salmon River. Your knowledge of the Salmon River NY, presentations, and ability to put us on Steelhead was spectacular. It was a pleasure to spend time with you and we both commented on your level of enthusiasm which never waned from the beginning of the day to the end and the Drift Boat row back (well at least part of the way back ha! ha!) to the lighthouse.

-

-

After fishing with me for a day, they went on their own into the same area we fished and hit a couple of lakers, brown and 2 steelhead. Congrats! Randy

Report: Fished 10/26 w/guide Randy Jones, who as usual helped us figure out what it took to get some hook-ups (no fresh fish / existing fish very spooky) by sticking w/naturals. Ended up (2 anglers) w/around a dozen hook-ups with about half landed, better than anyone else we saw that day. Next day fished w/o Randy but used his tips on patterns and leaders - had a very hot morning w/surprise fresh fish, all on purple wooly buggers. Afternoon slowed considerably but did land a monster brown that was very silver in color - must have been one of those German imports. Wish I were up there right now!! Strongly recommend Randy Jones - excellent guide/nice guy who always teaches me something each trip (BUT I tie better flies than him - ha ha!!).

Your insight to the Salmon River is excellent. Take care and keep up the good work. The area needs more guides like you. You give the area a good name. Thanks and Tightlines.

Once again your importation of Steelhead fishing knowledge was overwhelming and most worthwhile. My learning curve has been greatly accelerated due in large part to your expert guide service. As a testament, I was out the very next day to the same "honey hole" and was a respectable 1 for 3 on Steelhead which included the attached beauty which I hooked and landed all by my lonesome (fish released). If it weren't for the techniques and strategies you taught me from our past outings, I'm sure it would have been another fruitless day. See you again in the fall, Tom

Rudolf Vey NJ October 4, 1999

Dear Randy, It was again a great pleasure to fish with you as a guide on the Salmon River. We were really; really happy with the number and size of the fish we caught. I still think about that second day when Achim caught a 16 lbs. Steelhead in the morning and an 18 lbs. Steelhead in the afternoon. That day I had my first "Salmon River Grand Slam", a King Salmon, a Coho Salmon, a Steelhead and a Brown Trout. What a great day fishing that was. We were both so happy. We must say, we felt special. We hooked and caught fish by the dozens, whereas other anglers fishing the same spot stayed either fishless or hooked only the odd fish. Do to your Guide knowledge of the river and the fish.

Altogether we hooked over 160 fish in three days (I still remember my number for Saturday, Sunday and Monday: 32 – 14 – 54, that’s exact 100 fish hooked). And we still do laugh about it. We had a ball of a time fishing, and needless to say, you had a great part in it. Also, the accommodation at "Whitakers" was great as well. The new owners, the Adamski family, are great people – we really loved how we were treated, not as customers - no, we felt more as friends.

Thanks again,

Rudy Vey

Where the land ends LIFE begins

My favorite time of the year:

First off, we have had about a gate of water or more for almost the entire steelhead season, so far. This has and well continue to cause a flow of fresh fish into the river. The reservoir's are looking good with ample water for the upcoming Winter month's.

-

Weather and water wise, things are looking to be shaping up nicely for this Winter. With recent rain, then snow, then rain, then high winds combined with above freezing air temperature. This has produced additional run-off.

With air + water temperatures dropping you will then see them keying in on the slowest, deepest water for the remainder of the Winter. Keep in mind the transitional spots will still produce as long as we have fish on the move. (Presently)

-

Another key is angler pressure. Less anglers = less pressure. With cold temp's, this cuts out a lot of the fair weather anglers. Hunting season also causes a reduction of angler's on the river. One of the main ingredients that effect's angler pressure at this time of year are the holidays.

-

Most folks would think of Jan., Feb. not being very good. But I can tell you, it can and is a couple of great month's to steelhead fish.

All of the above and more are reasons why this is my favorite time of the year.

-

-

Archived Jan. Salmon River Report

(Photo's)

With the sunrise came hopes for a good day on the river.

-

I had a first today. My guest's were 100% on hooking up in every spot we fished off the drift boat. We hit fish in all 5 spots today. I also noticed about a dozen fish on the move (In transition, swimming up river) off the boat. Pat and Todd had a combined tally of 4 for 10 today on the Silver Bullet's! Blue egg sacks were the hot ticket today. Ssssssh.

We lost 2 fish today that were BIG Steelhead! One had to be about 20 lb's and the other was a solid 16 lb'r. Both were lost due to my guests poorly tied knots. (he-he)

(Photo's)

Todd is all smiles - 3 of the landed steelhead were released to fight another day and hopefully to produce more off spring for all of you to catch.

Only the above BIG Male was released into the cooler. Congrats!

-

(Photo's)

As the sun rose to another day on the water, it made me realize how very lucky I am. To do what I enjoy and share it with all of you.

Thanks,

Randy

( P.S. If you are coming up this weekend to fish, bring a shovel and sleep in. -yukyuk)

Randy,

Just a brief note to say thanks again for sharing an incredible day on the old Pucker Brush. I realized afterward that I got caught up with the catching and didn't ask a lot of intended questions. Fortunately you continued, throughout the day, to provide a wealth of detail and information. Not only did I learn how to be a better steelhead fisherman but also learned a few things about dedication, organization and service. Looking forward to fishing with you in November.

Bill

Feel free to contact my references regarding my presentations and experience:

FYI - Some folks think I only guide Fly Anglers. I don't discriminate, I also enjoy guiding you spin angler's too! ( yukyuk ) I personally enjoy use a spinning rod when I am scouting or fishing the larger pools. It allows me to more quickly cover my water and determine what's what. :)

Quality Fishing Testimonial for the Salmon River NY catching Steelhead or Salmon with Drift Boat Guide

It may be difficult to understand the term World Class Fishing until you have been there. But perhaps this will help!

Randy,

Thank you for several memorable trips this year on the Salmon River NY. The highlight of the year was definitely the outing on the Salmon River during SeptemberFishing the Salmon River NY with a salmon or steelhead driftboat guide with my son for salmon.

Dick Koelling

Note: If you don't recognize "Pucker-Brush Creek", that is one of my secret creeks where Steelhead abound in a beautiful , pristine environment without many or even any other anglers.

Todays Trip, Tips and Fond Memories:

We re-anchored the drift boat 6 times as we covered our water and worked this productive fishing lye. The fish lay along its entire length. Each time I moved the boat were into fresh un-fished waters. Fish-on! was had within a few drift's by each of my 2 client guest's aboard the Salmon River Drift Boat.

Then once the well ran dry or the fishing slooowed for 5-10 minutes, I would simply move the drift boat another boat length into some new, fresh water and fish. Within a few drift's both of my guest's would be into more fish. It worked like magic!! You too, can enjoy this same fish catching tip. It's simply called working your water.

The only way this worked was my guest's had there presentation down pat. We obviously had our rigging and habitat correct. These are the 3 most important aspect's of joining the elite group of 10% of the anglers catch 90% of the fish club.

Anglers on the bank saw we were having the most action of anyone, in this one spot the drift boat was anchored in. They lined up on the trail behind us and waited patiently for me to pull anchor and leave in the drift boat. What they didn't realize is this wasn't some special HOT SPOT. The fish were laying in its entire length. We simply had acquired the necessary knowledge of working our water, habitat, rigging and most importantly, presentation. Or? maybe we just got lucky? yukyuk

-

The funniest part of this day for me was listening to the comments made by other anglers fishing. Every 5 minutes or so my guest's would be playing another Salmon and I would hear one of them say loudly and excitedly, LOOK, they have another one on. Then shortly there after, LOOK, they have another one on. This went on ALL morning. Finally, they said, LOOK, they BOTH have one on. What’s that saying? Double your pleasure, double you fun?

We were ALL new once :) - Standing where you should be fishing:

There were about 6 anglers fishing across from us. They were standing waist to chest deep in the river. They were standing where they should have been fishing. (Very common on this river and rightly so, as we were all new once. Can you old fart's reading this remember back THAT far? yukyuk)

What they didn't know, but I did, was they were actually helping US! The fish that HAD been sitting in front of them had been pushed over in front of us.

Then they stood above us and again, to far out and pushed those fish down to us. Then, I guess because they were not having much success but we were, they stood to far out below us. Once again pushing the fish up to us.

I'd like to THANK these 6 guys for standing where they should be fishing and helping to make my guiding day, an easy, very successful one.

I was new once too, and I sometimes was guilty of standing out to far.

(The above "positive effect" of others standing out to far is rare. It normally has a VERY negative effect on others qaulity of fishing experience around you, should you accidentally do it, which is covered more below :)

Mail Bag:

The following question was asked to me by someone who had been taught the incorrect way to catch fish. He was really interested to learn the correct way to fish so he could show his children .I will always make time for anyone out there, who would like to learn how to fish for these magnificent fish. This was a great question that I find a lot of folks don’t realize, so I thought I would share it with you.

-

Randy, I was up fishing on Sunday. Saw some good fish. I am having trouble getting them to take a fly. By the time I get a shot at them, they are very pressured. It doesn't make a difference what fly I have on or what size tippet I am using or what length leader I have on. Any time the fly gets anywhere near them, they dodge it. What's going on? What should I do different? Thanks for your help

-

(As usual, just my opionion and yours may differ :)

Your situation is quite common. Your fish were doing what I call, "Parting like the Red Sea". They were actually telling YOU, that your rigging or presentation was off. I listen to what the fish are telling me, (Where is that medicine my doctor prescribed me for this condition ;) then adjust if needed.

Here's what I do.

First off, if those fish are not interested I LEAVE them and look for others. Do it ALL the time. You might have 100 Salmon in front of you, but only a few of them could be aggressive players. Some will strike and other's wont.

-

1. Stay in the fast water as these fish are getting ready to blow the hole and run up. They are much more aggressive than the ones in the slow water.

2. Try to fish above or below the gauntlet's. Work the water between 2A and Pineville. Most people fish were the river is most easily accessible or where they see the most cars parked. Stay away from those areas. What most people don’t realize is if they simple walk a short ways they will escape the crowds and pressured fish, on even the busiest weekends.

3. Pd test is determined by speed, clarity of water, species of fish, fishing pressure, fresh or educated fish.

4. Use the bright flies at dawn and dusk. Chartreuse, pink. If you find fish that have not seen any pressure then go bright.

5. Fast water go shorter leaders and heavier Pd. test as all the white water disguises the leader and weight that they will see in the slow water. Anytime you can disguise what your fly, bait or lure is tied too, any species of fish, fresh or saltwater, anywhere in the world, you will increase your odds.

6. Slow water, go longer tippet-leader and lighter Pd. test. (4 foot max. from fly to weight) - (check regs for special reg's area's) To put more distance between weight and main line as they can see much better in the slow water. Then they will concentrate only on your fly or bait. And not spook off your main line and weight. Speed and depth of water determine length of leader. (4 foot max. from fly to weight) - (check regs for special reg's area's)

7. Try to keep as much distance from the fish as possible as they are a little smarter than most folks give them credit. Distance also allows them to feel safe and comfortable and not so pressured. They are much more likely to stay longer, giving you more shots.

8. Presentation is everything. I find the Kings the least aggressive so putting it in their face is best. Whether you are swinging it with a sink tip, floating line or dead drifting (drift fishing). Everyday, when site fishing is possible we find some fish that no matter how many times you present the fly to them or how many times you change the pattern of the fly, they simple are not interested. These fish are left. Why waist your valuable fishing time :)

-

Hope this helps, if not e-mail me to discuss further. I’m glad you’re taking the time to learn how to do it right! I'm always more than happy to help anyone who wants to learn how to fish.

Happy Hookin;

Randy

Randy,

Your technique description is excellent. One point that I do not see explained is how to wade. Point #7 touches on this, but it needs more clarification on wading. Nothing bums me out more than seeing a guy standing in the run. I know the ( ----- run ) like the inside of my pocket. I snorkel it and clean it during the summer. The greatest depth is 4.5 feet for a brief moment and the rest averages 3-3.5 feet. This is true for much of the Salmon River. If an angler is up to his hips, he is in too far. The fish hold on either side of the fast water.

An angler should work the inside first and then fish his way across the river. If he moves into the water to far he will spook the fish on his inside of the run. If someone is across from him and they move out to far, the gauntlet effect takes place. The fish just zip through the run. If everyone is staying back, the fish take their time. They rest in the hole. Everyone catches fish.

I would love to see you do more writing on the wading subject. A few weeks ago the area by the island below the --- pool was so disorganized that it was unfishable. Guys were out to their waist, literally in the run. When I fish this area, I'm normally very close to the island or on the ridge above the first shoot. There are other things like crossing the river. It is dangerous and the best place is usually the tail of the pool, but you should not cross through someone's drift. If you feel it is the only place to cross, ask the opposing angler.

Thanks

-

You are absolutely correct and I couldn’t have said it better.

I wanted to write something about this earlier as I can see people standing way out in the run above ---. Those fish either turn around in the early season or blow by them. It also happens in -- hole, if someone stands in the lane that 80% of the fish travel, they spook and don't sit in the tail. Then the lucky people in the middle get them. I m always supper polite, and ask them if they realize how the hole works. If they say no, (which is obvious because of were they’re standing) I try to sincerely educate and help them understand how transitional fish relate to structure and current. Ill then make a suggestion as to were it would be better to stand so THEY will have a better chance to catch fish as well as everyone around them. It works every time. Most folks who obviously are new, are excited to get a helping hand .I’m not concerned in the least, if this is the only hole that this person knows and will be there from now on. The hole can only fit so many folks comfortably and if that person is there then that’s great! At least they wont be standing where they should be fishing and everyone can catch some fish. :)

-

-

Another funny guide story about standing where you should be fishing. Rarely a days go by when I am drifting down the river in the drift boat and see this. What’s funny is when the angler is standing waist deep in the water, exactly where the fish would normally be at and then casting and fishing into 2 inch's of water. Where there has not been a fish in 100 years. :)

The worst part about this?

Its when you are fishing across from these anglers and they dont realize that THEY are hurting your fishing opportunities. Several times I've had this happen to me while Im guiding and its hurt my guest's fishing opportunity. No biggy. I would like to think that these anglers are simply new. Like we ALL were once. I'll start a lil polite and professional chat with them and ask if I might offer them a suggestion that would help THEM to catch more fish. This has always been met with a polite and excited YES! I explain the hole, where the fish lay or travel and that if they back up they should have a fish on shortly. It works like magic and then everyone catches fish! I dont care if this is the only hole they know well and that they will be fishing next to me for the next few days. At least they well not be standing where they should be fishing, so we all can enjoy this amazing fishery. Fish on... Baby!!.

Here on Cape Cod, we have miles and miles of light colored sand flats and crystal clear water that makes sight casting to 5-25 pound stripers the order of the day when we have the sun to see'm.

This is probably the most exciting type of fly/spin fishing you will ever do. They're cruising the flats eating crabs, shrimp, silver sides and sand lances, and just waiting for your perfectly cast fly or bait/lure. Sometimes you need to burn up the water with a fast retrieve and at other times using a dead drift with the current is all that is needed. All methods will require distance, speed and accuracy in your casting skills.

You have some of the finest destination flats fishing in the world right here on Cape Cod. Seeing 100s or more fish in a tide is the norm. Test your skills and let's work together to help you along the path to hooking up in paradise.

-

We wade fish the southeast part of Cape Cod. This area is comprised of ocean islands, sand flats, marsh, bays, beaches, channels, rips, holes and surf. The area we fish is dependent on time of year, temperature of the water, weather and tide. A shuttle boat may be used to access offshore areas.

HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT:

May - Stripers galore. Areas are loaded with schoolies. These are what I call the salad days - any fly works.

Late May - early June- As the water warms, you'll see them on the flats and cruising along the beaches in schools of 50 to 200.

Sighting numerous fish passing by you within casting range in a 5 hour period is not uncommon. Sometimes, all day if we have the sun.

There are no fussy fish in this group. They are fresh, aggressive, and extremely hungry after their long journey from the Delaware, Chesapeake Bay and Hudson River areas.

On the Cape, we have the largest concentration of summer time resident stripers along the New England coast.

Early June - mid July - Expect 8-15 pound bluefish. This is when our largest resident and migratory stripers arrive. This is the best and easiest time of the year to catch a trophy.

Mid July - August - This is when the big boys are all around and getting very fussy and challenging. Hope your knots are good.

Tom was all smiles after fighting this big Steelhead. This was his first time ever fishing for Steelhead.

The second Steelhead even though smaller, still gave him a great fight and both Steelhead will last in his memory for a life time. Congrats Tom! I have a feeling it will be a long ride home for his father Mike!

Randy,

Just to let you know that Thomas & I had a great time fishing with you yesterday. You have a particularly good way of explaining things to kids that help them understand. However, the most valuable thing to me was that he (and I) got to fish with someone who understands and respects the resource and takes the time to explain the fish, it's life cycle, conservation and on stream courtesy and sportsmanship. It's a lesson that I hope sticks long after the memory of that 15 pound steelie has faded.

Look forward to fishing with you again.

Mike

Thanks Mike, its always fun to try to help hook something other than fish. I think we succeeded!

Outstanding Guided Drift Boat Fishing on the Salmon River Pulaski NY for Steelhead, Brown Trout or Salmon

September through April

The Salmon River is located in Pulaski NY on Lake Ontario's eastern shore, 30 miles north of Syracuse. Its reputation for large runs of Salmon - Steelhead and incredible average size of all species is unsurpassed by any other fishery in New England.

September 1 - October 31 - Tackle busting King Salmon averaging 10-20 lbs. will amaze you with their freight train runs. Trying to harness the raw power of a 12 lb Coho Salmon running in 20 different directions in a blink of an eye will keep you on your toes (and hopefully not on your back!)

October 15 - November - Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch.Fishing the Salmon River NY with a steelhead guide They have entered the river to spawn and will weight from 3-10 pounds. While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.

October 20 - May 1 - Steelhead 8-15 lbs.

As the Salmon River temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead.

What encourages the fish to decide to enter the river? - Clues on how to forecast or possibly predict your best fishing in the lower end.

-

Mother Natures Signature Clues:

Wind direction - Very Strong Wind out of the West - This can push the water in and make it a lil deeper, causing the fish to feel more comfortable and enter the River.

Lake turning over

Low light, morning and evening's and stormy weather (cloudy, rainy, a very very small or nonexistent moon over night and early morning)

Higher water levels - natural rain and snow run-off. If natural run off causes the river to just rise 50-100 cfs, that might be all that it would take.

-

Man made Incentives to Enter and Run:

Those "Dam People" (yukyuk) releasing more water. Dam water releases normally coinciding with Mother Nature or following her.

-

Fish's Biological Clock - tick tick

As the days grow short'r, it helps!

Bottom Line - They will run when they are darn good and ready

-

Example - (FYI - sometimes none of the above-below happens and just like this August, we had some fish enter the river and run it)

waterdata.usgs.gov/ny/nwis/uv/?site_no=04250200

410 cfs at "live" Pineville before the rain to 470 cfs "live" Pineville after the rain. Thats a 60 cfs rise in the water level at Pineville caused by run-off.

Then, figure more water entering the river further down thru run-off and Trout Brook, which would bring the water level up even more. Probably over 100 cfs.

Then figure this into the equation - West wind around 20 mph.

Soooo, combine the wind direction and higher water flow and suzzam!!! major run or good run entering the lower end.

Now, stick with me...... lets also add into the above the fishes biological clock that is ticking daily, suggesting that they make there run into and up the river.

Next step is "low light". there are 2 low light periods everyday. Now add in an overcast, drizzly, rainy day and sometimes they will run all day.

-

If you get a combination of a couple, few or all of the above, usually (not always) it will mean a nice fresh run entering the lower end. Sometimes you roll the dice in the lower end and its just like a "Box of Chocolates".

I sincerely hope this helps you a lil more in understanding what encourages them to "first" enter the river and help you to catch a BUNCH of fish!!.

Todays Interesting Guide Tip:

This tip comes with a money back guarantee! :)

-

This relates nicely to ALL fish that are in a transitional stage in the Salmon River.

-

Soooo, the lesson for today is there are 3 "basic" ways to locate and target these fish. (1 thru 3, in my opionion. 4-7 is advanced )

1. When the Salmon are running, fish there transitional resting points as they make there way up the river. Otherwise, you are fishing to fish that are not stopping, decreasing your odds greatly, in my opionion.

2. Once they stop to hold for the remainder of the day, fish these prime transitional holding waters.

3. Find these prime non-transitional holding places in the river in Sept. and just fish those. After all, they aren't going anywhere soon.

4. Find a spot that is a combination of all 1-3. (Or, a spot that has all 3 in close proximity, so you can jump around according to what the fish are telling you to do)

5. Combine 1-4 and find a place above a looong stretch of rapids. The fish get tired after running these rapids. These fish will be in this spot for the longest period of time, offering you the greatest opportunity, all day!

6. Combine 1-5 and make sure that your spot has 98% of the fish in a transitional stage, move into it. This will offer you the greatest opportunity!

7. Combine 1-6 and pick a spot that compresses and or concentrates them. On a dime, like a sardine can, trash can lid or the size of a Volkswagen beetle or bus. This cuts down on all the guess work and allows to to present your offering to all the fish on every drift.

8. The VERY BEST place to fish? Is anywhere I'm not! - yukyuk

-

By utilizing the above, you will have the most fish in front of you for the greatest period of time in a concentrated area offering you the greatest opportunity to present your offering to ALL of them. Fish ON and ON and ON! - Baby!!

Now you know what I look for normally.....................

I hope you found "Todays Guide Tip" entertainingly informative or mildly educational.

Best Fish's,

Randy

The Guide Drift Boat allows you to Spin or Fly Fish a great deal of water for Salmon or Steelhead on the Salmon River NY. Often when the Steelhead or Salmon are scattered this is a fabulous water chariot. - www.yankeeangler.com/salmon-river-drift-boat/

At 16 feet, this 285 pound guide drift boat is comfortable and a very stable platform .
