Webb Bridge, 2003.

The winning submission for the sculptured Webb Bridge came from artist, Robert Owen in collaboration with Denton Corker Marshall, architects. The design developed out of a desire for a symbolic and poetic demonstration of reconciliation and indigenous history provided a source of its inspiration.

 

The bridge is an analogy of Koori fishing traps and the gestural flow of the river below. The decommissioned rail bridge, symbol of European culture, is reconciled with the natural and indigenous past. The resulting structure suggests a new link between the old and new, past and future. A pedestrian/cycle bridge crossing the river Yarra within Melbourne Docklands, the scheme is not only a practical solution to the physical site, conditions and program requirements, but also demonstrates the Docklands Authority commitment to art and innovative architecture in the development of the precinct. As such, the project addresses aesthetic, historical and symbolic issues as integral components of its design.

 

Webb Bridge won the prestigious RAIA Joseph Reed Urban Design Award 2005 and commendation for Urban Design in the National Awards.

The west side of the Lake Street Bridge has trains, roads, steps down to the river, and steps up to an elevated park.

The conservatory has a composite structure composed of a gridshell, which works in tandem with an external superstructure of radially arranged, arched steel ribs.

Stretching across the calm waters of the Öresund Strait, the Øresund Bridge is more than steel and concrete—it is a symbol of Scandinavian unity and sustainable progress. Linking Malmö in Sweden with Copenhagen in Denmark, this 16-kilometer marvel combines road and rail, reducing travel time and fostering cross-border collaboration. Beneath the sweeping Nordic skies, it stands as a testament to engineering excellence and a shared vision for a greener future.

 

Fun Fact

The Øresund Bridge is part of a unique hybrid structure: a bridge, an artificial island (Peberholm), and a tunnel. This design was chosen to protect air traffic near Copenhagen Airport and preserve the delicate marine ecosystem.

Kalurghat Bridge, Chittagong

 

Kalurghat Bridge is the first bridge in Karnaphuli River. Kalurghat Bridge an old bridge, once the only link between the southern region of chittagong division on the bank of the river karnafuli with the rest of the country. This 239m long bridge was installed as a simple rail bridge of steel structure between Janalihut and Gomdandi railway stations in 1930. The bridge was commissioned for operation of trains in Chittagong-Dohazari section in the year 1931. Thirty-one years after its inauguration, considering the suffering of the people it was modified with decking and carpeting and turned into a rail and road-bridge in 1962.

কালুরঘাট সেতু কর্ণফুলী নদীর উপর প্রতিষ্ঠিত। প্রাগৌতিহাসিক যুগ হতে নদী পারাপারের জন্য স্থানটি কালুর ঘাট নামে নদী পারাপারে ভূমিকা রেখে আসলেও ১৯৩০ সালে ব্রিটিশ শাসনামলে এ রেল সেতুটি নির্মিত হয়। স্থানীয় ভাবে কালুরঘাট সেতুটি কালুরঘাটের পোল নামে বহুল পরিচিত। সেতুটির বয়স বর্তমানে ৯০ বছরেরও বেশি।

A point of interest in this semi-basement space is that it is open to the air on the left hand side allowing for natural ventilation, and a view through to the adjacent landscape.

The Öresund Bridge stretches silently from Malmö towards Copenhagen in this ethereal long exposure lasting 663 seconds. The use of a strong ND filter turns both water and sky into soft veils, letting the bridge command the scene with geometric elegance.

Fun fact: The Öresund Bridge is both a bridge and a tunnel! It transitions into an underwater tunnel halfway across the strait. This engineering marvel is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe, spanning nearly 8 kilometers above the sea.

the eiffel tower, an iron giant reaching for the clouds, reveals both its strength and grace when viewed from below. this angle celebrates not only the scale but the delicacy of its latticework, like a piece of intricate lace set against the sky. capturing paris from this perspective gives new life to the cityâs most iconic symbol.

standing on west 33rd street, near hudson yards, i tilted my lens upward. the skyscrapers rose like steel giants, their glass facades reflecting the city's pulse. a faint rainbow arched across the sky, a delicate contrast to the rigid lines of architecture. in that moment, the convergence of human ambition and nature's subtle beauty was palpable.

Looking up inside the abandoned coal washing plant at Blaye-les-Mines gave me this vertigo-inducing view that I had to capture. I was struck by how the complex grid of beams and platforms created this almost cathedral-like space above me.

I positioned myself directly beneath this central section and aimed upward to emphasize the dizzying height and the symmetrical patterns formed by the structural elements. The warm rust tones and natural light filtering through the distant windows highlight the textures and depth of this massive industrial space.

What fascinates me about photographing these abandoned industrial sites is how they reveal the impressive engineering of a bygone era. This coal washing plant, once filled with noise and activity, now stands silent but still commands respect through its sheer scale and complexity.

I wanted to document this piece of mining heritage while also capturing the strange beauty that emerges when industrial structures are left to age and decay. These places tell important stories about our industrial past that are worth preserving, even if just in photographs.

Glasgow Tower is a free-standing tower located on the south bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland and forms part of Glasgow Science Centre complex. It holds a Guinness World Record for being the tallest tower in the world in which the whole structure is capable of rotating 360 degrees. It has been closed for more than 80% of its life. It re-opened to the general public in July 2014.

 

Background and world records

At 127 metres (417 ft), the Glasgow Tower is currently the tallest tower in Scotland, and since late 2015 following the demolition of both the Red Road Flats and the Bluevale and Whitevale Towers the structure is now the tallest in all of Glasgow. It holds a Guinness World Record for being the tallest tower in the world in which the whole structure is capable of rotating 360 degrees. The whole structure rests upon a Nigerian made 65-centimetre-diameter (26 in) thrust bearing, and is connected to its foundations by two concentric rings and shock absorbers. The thrust bearing itself rests in a 15-metre-deep (49 ft) caisson. This is to allow the building to rotate under computer control to face into the wind. The tower has two lifts each with a 12-person capacity, but for reasons of comfort, this is normally limited to 6 guests plus a single member of staff. There is also an emergency staircase, comprising 523 stairs from the Cabin level to the Podium

Spanning the Wagonga Inlet.

 

The Narooma bridge was the first major bridge constructed on the Princes Highway by the Main Roads Board as part of its efforts to develop the highway. The bridge was built between 1929 and 1931 and crosses the Wagonga Inlet. The bridge has three spans and is made of steel and concrete. It is one of two bascule span bridges of its type remaining in New South Wales in 2002

This is a part of the in-building steel structures of the old welding hall of the former shipyard NDSM, 2016.

 

This steel structure is not maintained for a long time.

The sun rises over San Francisco Bay, painting the sky in gradients of orange, pink, and deepening blue while the iconic shipyard cranes of Pier 70 stand in silhouette. This is the view that greeted generations of maritime workers arriving for early shifts—the industrial skyline that built America's Pacific naval power now transformed into one of the city's most evocative historic landmarks.

Those gantry cranes marching across the horizon are among the most recognizable structures at Pier 70. Their skeletal steel frameworks, designed for lifting massive ship components and machinery, create a rhythmic pattern against the colorful dawn sky. During World War II, cranes like these operated around the clock, hoisting steel plates, engines, and armaments onto vessels destined for the Pacific theater. The distinctive A-frame shape allowed them to straddle railway tracks that once crisscrossed the shipyard, moving materials from fabrication shops to drydocks with industrial efficiency.

The water catches and reflects the warm sunrise colors, creating a mirror image that doubles the visual impact. San Francisco Bay has always been central to the city's identity and economy—first as a Gold Rush gateway, then as a maritime and naval powerhouse, and now as a contested space where public access, environmental restoration, and development pressures collide. This particular stretch of waterfront, once closed to civilians for security and operational reasons, has gradually opened to public use as the shipyard's industrial functions wound down.

Sailboat masts visible on the left frame the scene, reminding us how this working waterfront has transitioned. Where cargo ships and naval vessels once dominated, recreational sailors now navigate these waters. It's a shift repeated across San Francisco's waterfront—from commercial and industrial uses toward residential, recreational, and mixed-use development. The tension between honoring maritime heritage and accommodating contemporary urban needs defines much of the conversation around places like Pier 70.

The composition itself emphasizes the scale and drama of industrial infrastructure. Silhouetting the cranes against the saturated sky transforms functional machinery into sculpture, their geometric forms creating visual interest through repetition and variation. The foreground remains in deep shadow, focusing attention on that brilliant horizon where industrial history meets natural beauty. This is the kind of view that makes San Francisco special—a city where working landscapes and stunning natural settings coexist, where you can witness both human ambition and environmental grandeur in a single frame.

For decades, these cranes represented economic vitality and American industrial might. Now they stand as monuments to a bygone era, preserved not for their utility but for their historical and aesthetic value. Their presence reminds us that San Francisco wasn't always a tech hub—it was a city built by people who worked with their hands, who built ships and loaded cargo, who operated cranes and welded steel. As the city transforms, these structures anchor us to that history.

This is the Globe at the Mall of Asia. I have seen it for three days that men are working on scaffoldings and on its framework; installing Christmas lights. I have heard that this will be lighted on November 9, 2009 together with the giant Christmas tree inside the mall.

 

I documented this activity, hoping that on the day that it will be lighted, I will be there and that would be another photo series for flickr friends
