That is a life guard sitting huddled on the chair . These guys feel cold even though the temperature (at around 5:00 pm) was still approx 78 F.

The image is a a two image vertorama.

This shot is the first of a small series on the Red Road area of Glasgow. I'm hoping to use these images to show to some groups working in an attempt to persuade them to allow me to work with them to chart the final years of the area. A more ambitious version of the Oatlands series from a few months back.

For a bit of background info to start us off. These flats that you see are at the dominant form of housing in the Red Road and, at 31 storeys, were once the highest residential buildings in Europe and two of the towers remain the tallest buildings in the city.

Designed in 1962 by architect Sam Bunton for Glasgow Corporation, the flats were constructed between 1964 and 1969 as part of the great post

war, modernist era house building.

The construction phase of the buildings is riddled with tales and fables that I cannot yet verify the truth of. Some say that the insulation consists of packets of old newspapers, others claim that the eventual design was so poor and so ill serving to the residents that Sam Bunton was struck off the architectural register for good.

I know plenty more about the ethos behind the building, and if you really want a planning history lesson, I am sadly a chartered town planner so just flickrmail me and I shall offload some boredom onto you.

What I also know about the area in a personal sense is that it is visible across the city as a prominent and unloved landmark. I know that it is not an area you are supposed to visit. The stigma of crime, violence and drugs hangs over it and the name is synonymous with the worst legends of Glasgow.

I was however, some say stupidly, drawn to find out for myself what the area really looked like from up close, and what it was like to live in. I was, maybe naively convinced that the people I would meet would not back up the stereotypes and cliches that are held over them.

Hopefully with the shots to come I can tell some of that answer and also, develop a much wider project for and with some of the people I have met

Any feedback on these images warmly appreciated.
