Railway Preservation Society of Ireland steam engine 461, dating all the way back to 1922 puffs its way past Drumcondra station with a rake of Craven carriages 10 years ago, 5th May 2012.

New Haven Railroad I-5 class streamlined Hudson steam locomotive # 1402, along with another Hudson steam locomotive # 1401, is seen in the yard at Boston, Massachusetts, 7-28-1946. An employee standing by the rear driver is steam cleaning the running gear, wheels and other parts on the locomotive.
The name of the photographer that captured this image on film is unknown. This is a modified, enhanced and cropped photo scan that is from a B&W negative in my personal collection.

Sometimes a bus so visually rough comes our way for re-painting that desperate measures are called for before we even dare send it to the shop. Unpteen layers of flaking crazed coatings need removing before dispatch if there's any chance of a budget re-spray looking anything like decent. This was ex London Country Park Royal bodied Leyland Atlantean, JPL 153K earlier today being 'finished off' in order to meet it's appointment with the spray booth later this afternoon. Here, Mr 'national bus is best!' wields the steam lance removing paint in strips after we'd become bored by two days with scrapers and elbow grease. The surface of our yard was an inch or so greater in elevation above sea level following his exploits.

MA4 was allocated the role of Launceston shed's portable steam cleaner and was duly festooned with the various hoses and fittings. The loco was steamed each weekday, as required, and in the late afternoon, the fire would be dropped and the loco returned to the shed.
On Friday, 2nd Feb 1973, MA4 has just finished its shift which included cleaning loco H1 which had just been allocated to the Tasmanian Transport Museum for preservation.
A few months after the Feb. 1971 Centenary Celebrations, MA4 was returned to Launceston for the annual boiler inspection, after a short stay at Devonport. All servicable 'M' and 'MA' classes had their boilers inspected & tested with the result that all had their pressure reduced due to the condition of the boilers - TGR were not going to spend money on retubing and firebox repairs when there was no suitable work available for them (so they thought...).

It's much nicer, if not easier, doing an electrical service of the traction motors after all the road dirt, dust and grime has been steam-cleaned away...!
Festooned in steam-cleaning hoses, MA4's work day is over: it's now back to the roundhouse, via the ashpits where the pacific's fire will be dropped.
A 1940 (?) Chevrolet Coupe is steam cleaned in the foreground, while our 2012 Volkswagen Golf is prepared for cleaning in the background.

The Santan Freeway Loop 202 is in the southeast valley of Phoenix. This billboard is between I-10 and the Price Freeway Loop 101 in Chandler. Onsite Insite offers the only billboards along a 23-mile stretch of the Santan Freeway.
The steam cleaning man removes oil residue from the engine and transmission of our 2012 Volkswagen Golf.
So, a little bit of comparison.
The photo on the right is after I had hand-scrubbed each step multiple times with about twenty bottles of Resolve Triple Action Stain Remover over a period of about a week and a half. And then my mom steam cleaned it to polish the whole mess off.
I had hopes that the steam cleaner would perform magic on it's own, but unfortunately learned in the beginning that the steam cleaner wasn't able to pick up any of the deep-set stain. So I had to get it as pristine as possible using the ol' Cinderella method.
The title of the picture is "After-ish" because this is actually a During photo overall. After cleaning the stairs, I'd joint compounded the various cracks and sanded them down (you can still see the dust and stuff in the picture, though this was after I had half-heartedly vacuumed the mess). I still have more work to do here, primarily painting the walls and trim.
Norfolk Southern operated Norfolk & Western modern streamlined J - class 4-8-4 steam locomotive # 611, is seen with a workman steam cleaning the wheels & rods in the yard at Atlanta, Georgia, May 1983.
The locomotive is being prepared for it's next day railfan excursion from Atlanta to Chattanooga and return. Notice the lightweight alloy side rods and the installation of the rod roller bearings. Also notice the chains wrapped around the driver to help prevent locomotive movement.

TGR's Traffic requirements mandated that a spare loco was kept in steam each weekday at Launceston & Hobart (Devonport ceased this practice in the mid-1960's).
For many years, Launceston had kept old locos specifically for use as mobile steam cleaners; the last, Beyer, Peacock B4, was retired in late 1959. To replace the ancient eight-wheeler, TGR began a program to adapt the H, M & MA fleet with fittings that allowed the connection of the steam cleaning equipment but could be quickly disconnected if the loco was required to enter traffic.

I'm also doing some work to the door, such as filling in the gap at the top of the door, installing a new lock set, adding frosting to the glass, and of course, painting it.
*I was referring to caulk as grout for a little bit.** No, I did not use grout to seal around doors and windows. So I think I fixed the error now.

The 'guts' of the steam cleaner gear was an injector which drew steam from a new point on the main manifold. Water supply came via a hose from a new valve fitted to the tender front. It was augmented by the liquid in the 44 gallon drum - a mix of water and high strength cleaning detergent.
A long, high temperature hose was attached to the injector outlet - the hose terminated in a lance that concentrated the stream into a powerful jet which cut through the built-up grease and grime as well as testing the clinging strength of the paint underneath...
