The secret of bird photography (apparently) is not just the fancy telephoto lenses and expensive kit, but actually lies in getting close to the bird.
For me at the moment, getting up-close is doubly important as I don't have the fancy gear! I use a 55-250mm kit lens, whereas most bird photographers shoot with at least 300mm, sometimes 400 or 500mm!
This shot was at f5.6, 250mm so is quite heavily cropped. Even though I was only about 10 feet from the cute little bird! Over sharpened, possibly?
I also had to clone a twig from right in front of the bird, across its neck!

365 Project - Day 29
My second lot of Glyos figures from Onell Design turned up today. Mostly see through stuff, along with a couple of figures from last time to customise and a couple of bits from the Buildstation (Including a freebie Pheyden) :)
This is inspired by the Predator from the NES game (of which NECA are doing an action figure of soon). Hence the pixelisation and posterised look.

Our little Downy woodpecker. We have several that visit our yard. Their antics always amuse me.

We passed this thing on the way in in the morning. The middle part spins, rotating at about 0.8 second/revolution. Nobody was near it but there was somebody out about a quarter mile away from that big rental camper, near the road but pretending not to see us and walking away into the desert.
On the way back, it had been moved and there was an additional truck, still nobody to be seen.
I'm guessing it's some kind of camera/motion detector, further guessing (based on the guy walking around in the desert earlier) that it's for detecting humans, even further guessing that it's being developed for somebody like the border patrol.
Ever seen anything like this?
I don't do people shots because my camera is always seen. Tonight, i broke some rules and took sneaky photos, when I wasn't supposed to take photos at all. I think I liked it...a lot.
One more here.

The wife and I were enjoying the morning Sun and having tea on our deck.
I noticed Morley hunkered down in stealth mode cooling off in the cool shade.

Stealthily, invisibly, he approaches...
He's traveling light today, knowing he's finally close to his prey. He'll post well tonight.
She senses his presence but due to his highly effective camouflage, she can't locate him.
He aims, he shoots, and it's over. The hunter has triumphed!

July 5th, 2011 - After the long travel day yesterday we were ready for a great day of exploring Glacier National Park. First order of business: find a new campsite. Then, hike one of the few trails open to us, the trail to Avalanche Lake. There had been a LOT of snow last winter, and while we waited as long as we could (summer ends early when you're in the school system) to go to Glacier, it wasn't long enough. The Going to the Sun road was still mostly closed and the hiking was very limited.

We'd been working our way up the coast, looking for that perfect view of Heceta Head we'd had the first time we visited. That was not to be, not today...

Next stop: Cape Perpetua. Low tide would have got us tide pools but high tide got us huge waves breaking in the lava cracks and a spouting horn. We meant to stop-and-go but it was so good we stayed for an hour and a half.
