Painting in the Fluro!!

Last sticker for 2015. A new small sticker I started a while ago. With everything I like, I like to dig. So with street art and graff the history of it is as important to me as what's going on now. Actually, it's probably more important to me because I feel it gives me insight into what's happening now. A lot of people like to site Taki 183, StayHigh 149, Phase 2, Style Wars, Martha Cooper, as some of the players who started graffiti culture as we know it today. But Graff culture goes back much further. In this piece I reference Endwahl, Overby, and of course Kilroy who did international tags way earlier than any of the previously mentioned players. There were a number of books written on graffiti in 60s, prior to the WildStyle revolution in the 70s. A lot of street artists and writers today like to bitch and moan about how pop the culture has become, but it was already turning pop in the 1970s. And that's not ness a bad thing. Hip Hop music has become mostly pop. The majority of MCs are garbage. But the MCs I consider to be the best of the time; MF Doom, Aesop Rock, Edan, and Pigeon John to mention a few, they couldn't have existed back in the 80s and 90s. So, don't bitch and moan, find the good shit in the culture and ignore the rest. There's a lot of fresh shit out there. And get some historical context, you'll appreciate the work more. (Note: I know MF Doom actually started MCing in the 90s under the guise of KMD, but that works isn't as good as the work he has done as MF Doom in my opinion.)
