Work was in full swing at Spring Road station in October 1970. This is a view from the outside of the booking office (left), on the right was a standard GWR shed. We are looking down the slope to the Birmingham bound platform. All the buildings at Spring Road were made from corrugated iron, nearest the camera are the Gentlemen, waiting room and Ladies Room, the single chimey is for the waiting room fire. On the Stratford-upon-Avon bound platform the small waiting shelter (with adverts) is complete and is perhaps being used as a temporary store. The station was gas lit at the time but new electric lighting was part of these works. incredibly the crew took down the 1908 running in board with its original Swindon cast columns but the recovery team failed to spot one of the columns in the undergrowth and 50 years on it is still there. Maybe a heritage line needs one?

The row of buildings are the backs of shops and houses which front onto Shaftmoor Lane, the nasty Lucas car park was fairly new but was not part of this building work. The station remained open during this and passengers just avoided the rubble, mud and scaffolding.

It was on this day I spotted the BR totems which were attached to the gas lamps and thrown into a heap on the ground, I applied to buy one and was successful although the outrageous price of £3.15/-0d was nearly half a week's wages.

The colour slide is poor, I misjudged the exposure when taking it, in fact I cannot understand why I kept it, until now that is.

The new picture shows the slope today, glass bus shelters have replaced the corrugated iron, there are no passenger facilities. The "Booking Office" is a small portacabin where the GWR store shed stood. I have had to take the new view from lower down as foliage and signage block the matching scene. A class 172 arrives with 2S46 the 13.25 Kidderminster to Whitlocks End.
