A one-off bookwork featuring audio cassette. The book is a series of photographs made by projecting small pieces of paper ephemera onto photographic paper. The pages are the original photographic images on glossy photo paper. The audio cassette contains a unique short soundwork, ‘Static’. The cassette is housed in a hinged metal construction created specially for the book by Susan Heath.
Our return from the Outer Banks took us, by design, through Edenton, North Carolina. It is a town of about 5,400 people (2000 census) in Chowan County at the northwest end of Albemarle Sound. It is a beautiful old town with many lovely homes and other buildings; the National Register of Historic Places lists over 20 sites in and near Edenton, including an historic district consisting of several properties. The town is situated on the Chowan (pronounced ChohWAHN) River and Edenton Bay of Albemarle Sound. The water in the foreground of this photo is the end of Edenton Bay.
The Cupola House was built in 1758 for Francis Corbin, a land administrator for Lord Granville. Cupola House Association was formed in 1918 to protect the house. In 1967, the house was restored and furnished as a museum of the pre-Revolutionary War period. Cupola house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in April 1970 (#70000889), and was also placed on the much shorter list of National Historic Landmarks at that time.
What causes us to return to Edenton periodically is simply that it is a beautiful place. However, one of its claims to significance s that it was selected in 1722 by the North Carolina legislature to be the first permanent seat of the colony's government, however, no permanent capital was successfully established until New Bern became the capital in 1766. "Permanent" is not the right word, as a new capital -- Raleigh -- was laid out 22 years later on 1,000 acres of land and the first capitol building in Raleigh was commenced a few years later.
