Artist statement: Propose symbolises eternal love through two turtles. Facing each other they embody unwavering devotion, while glass beads evoke trust and purity. Crafted from enduring granite, it mirrors the unbreakable bond between souls.
Excerpt from wellingtoncityheritage.org.nz:
Albatross has high artistic value. The sculpture is bold in form and materials; its organic shapes echo the hills of Wellington and its use of water blurs the line between the city and the harbour.
Albatross’s maker, Tanya Ashken, is an acclaimed and accomplished New Zealand sculptor. It was Ashken’s’ strong desire to provide Wellington with a public sculpture that. Albatross also has a strong association with the Wellington Sculpture Trust, which was formed from the prolonged process from which Albatross was born. Albatross was a rallying cry for public sculpture advocates and it was a catalyst for the relatively prolific public sculpture scene in Wellington.
Albatross has considerable cultural value to Wellington. It is a significant piece of public art, artistically and socially. It also remains a highly valued sculpture for the Wellington Sculpture Trust.
Albatross is comprised of three large, white, abstract ferro-cement shapes arranged in a raised circular fountain. Water cascades from all three shapes, giving the sculpture significant kinetic and aural qualities.
In Albatross, Wellington curator Aaron Lister sees an artistic connection between the sculpture and the Wellington Sculpture Trust, writing that ‘its abstracted forms, which harness natural rhythms and energies, embody the Trust’s early ideals and objectives’ in a statement of ‘cultural and spiritual values in the face of the city’s redevelopment’. Lister also believes Albatross tries and succeeds at interacting with Wellington’s natural landscape :
Its gleaming white surfaces reflect the light and colours of its harbour-side setting, while its organic shapes echo the hill forms of this evocative natural environment. Ashken’s use of water as both a malleable sculptural form and a symbolic force serves to bring the power of the harbour closer to the heart of the city.
These public toilets in the Queens gardens of Shepparton, Victoria, Australia, provided some not so light, but dark humour for the locals. The locals found it amusing that the council had installed these state-of-the-art self-cleaning toilets in the gardens. They seemed like a bright idea and although saving money and time for cleaning they lacked some artificial intelligence, or a couple of if then statements, if you are into programming. Although there is nothing funny about homelessness, a scenario like the auto wash scene in Fifth element occurred. Here is a link to the iconic scene www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkGsYEKOswU It is local legend or a Furphy en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furphy ) depending on who you talk to, that some poor homeless person seeking shelter, tried to sleep in them over night. Before going on, it should be said that most locals laughed at councils’ decision to install the state-of-the-art convenience, not at the fate of the homeless man that wanted a good night’s sleep, out of the elements. As the story would go, the man entered the toilets in the evening, unbeknownst to him, the toilets self-locked at a certain time, locking him inside the cubical. This might be scary enough, but apparently, the thing self-cleans all surfaces overnight. A very handy thing if you are trying to avoid the worst toilets in Scotland as in Trainspotting www.youtube.com/watch?v=P88cV5mFWoI but not so good, if you are locked in the facility, and must try to sleep, all night covered in high grade disinfectant. Apparently, no amount of screaming and yelling would help him as there was no one around to hear him. Don’t be frightened though if you find your self in need of a public convenience, as the issues have been solved, albeit after the fact.

What could be more fashionable than a single white tail feather ? It's a bold statement by any means, and I'm sure he's the talk of the bird world.
The white tail feather is actually Leucism which is caused by uneven distribution of melanin in the feathers.
I saw this card at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. It still carries great meaning in today's political climate.
