State Street & Wabash Street Bridges

A pedestrian, let's call him Hugh, heads through a flashy underpass on the Chicago Riverwalk. Thanks, Hugh, for debuting ... and thank hue for viewing :)

It is well below 20ºF today and even the ice is steaming a bit from the bitter cold that has hit the river. My frozen hands still hold on to the shutter long enough to capture a three-shot HDR.

This is currently my favorite shot of the HH02 Steelton Local and probably will be for a long time.

I've got to give props to my dude Jim Stanton for recognizing an ex-Conrail horn. We beat feet to the State Street Bridge to find the local job coming off the Steelton Industrial track and creeping through CP Harrisburg.

Much to my delight it was the NS 5301 leading still wearing the "GP38-2ECO" stamp under the cab window. I had missed getting this guy leading the HH02 earlier this month so I was glad to get another crack at it.

The ex-Penn Central/ex-Conrail GEEP was rebuilt in 2013 from a GP38-2 to a GP38-2ECO, with the 16-645 prime mover replaced with a turbo charged EMD V8-710G3A-T2, among other things.

My 70D gave it everything it had.

ps: Thanks for all the comments. Lost Viking, I was trying to capture the blue skies in the pictures taken the day before but, unfortunately, the blue was not the same. I'm planning another set with clouds like the ones passing over the Acropolis.

There will be a ton of these photos to share throughout the season, butI am particularly fond of this type of morning. Crystal-clear skies and the city is warm in its soul.

State Street Bridge in downtown Chicago.

Some people don't understand why I'm taking their picture.

This guy was one of them.

'Why you takin' my picture' he asked nicely... like he really wanted to know.

'Because you're 'the beautiful people' I said.

Then his smile fulfilled the prohecy.

A life filled with laughter is a good life.

Awake My Soul

Shot on March 1, 2007. A few things I like about this photo:

1) Marina Towers look almost plastic.

2) The fantastic blue light under the bridge

3) The detail in the metal structure supporting the bridge (hooray for HDR!)

4) The shadow cast onto the watch tower by the pedastrian fence

Which of these do you like the most? (or is there something else)
