They were burning brush at the transfer station on a hot July day. I had watched too much TV news that week and the flames and smoke looked to my jaded eyes like the fires of hell. That image became an anchor for this photo collage that I hope illustrates some of the deep divisions, inequities, and strife in this country and the world. We must do better.

Sometimes the darkness feels overwhelming.
President Obama's speech last night was chilling and his dismay and even fear was palpable.
As Michelle Obama said,
“We have got to grab our comfortable shoes, put on our masks, pack a brown bag dinner and maybe breakfast too, because we’ve got to be willing to stand in line all night if we have to."
And, we have to do a lot more to save this country. Write to all our representatives to support the Post Office. Get a ballot asap and mail it back the same day (or drop off). Find someone to help vote, And, And, And......

She is named Cheeky and she knows she is cheeky and she likes it. The only one can put her in her place is her husband Shy. He likes to chase her every now and then and they go round and round with Shy biting Cheeky's tail a lot and driving her around the neighborhood. They like to squawk a lot at me. Cheeky likes to fly in thorugh the open window and sit on the TV during the boring winter months. Once she listened to the whole of the presidents State of the Union speech whilst she was on the TV. I think she likes the heat and the sounds vibrating on her feet. She also likes the heater as long it is very low.
Scrub jays like to stash their food and Cheeky will hide peanuts in the apartment. She has been known to hide them in the flower pot soil and later they sprout a plant. No harvest yet though. She's only half a farmer with no intention of spending her life on the land. She rather put her winnings away for the winter than investing in a life like that.

Text reproduced from ballot proposals to alter the state constitutions on marriage, annotated by the artist. "State of the Union" is a thirty-one print installation focused on the U.S. states that have amended their constitution through defense of marriage act ballot measures to explicitly define marriage as between a man and a woman. Each print is dedicated to one of these states and includes the state ballot title, text of the ballot measure and the official voter results in numeric count and percentage. All text is printed in white Humanist font on a solid lavender background. The opacity of both the printed ballot measure text and the lavender background is dictated by the number of 'yes' and 'no' votes received. The higher the percentage of 'no' votes, the more opaque (saturated) the lavender becomes. For example, if thirty-five percent of the vote was against the measure, the lavender is thirty-five percent opaque. Likewise, the opacity of the ballot text is linked to the 'yes' vote and becomes more prominent with the higher 'yes' percentage. Every ballot measure has been copy edited by hand to reverse the negative implications and render marriage between any two people legal. Lavender was chosen as the dominant color because of its historical association with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered rights and liberation movement. Clear and direct, the visual tug-of-war representing the 'yes' and 'no' votes resonates across the prints and throws the individual states into contrast with one another. 'State of the Union' is a collection of material that is simultaneously of public record and highly personal. It is a poetic call to action and a necessary record of this shifting and contentious moment in history. 'State of the Union' has also been published as a thirty-two page pamphlet by Printed Matter. Copies are available free-of-charge at Printed Matter"--The artist's website.
