The Teleidoscope: Starvation

Starved of warmth.

After a quick search through the dictionary I found that there is an alternate definition of the word "Starve". While it largely applies to one suffering from lack of nutrients, it can also mean "to suffer or die from cold". I really wanted to try something different for this theme, to step away from the obvious images of food (or lack thereof). I felt that this definition would go quite perfectly with the amazing amount of snow that has appeared in the last few days.

To say I was cold during this is an understatement, what you don't see is that I'm not wearing a shirt underneath the blanket and after standing knee deep in snow for 30 minutes without a shirt on, I was most certainly about to starve.

As the sun forced its way through the haze it shed warm light over the breeding colony. For many on lookers everything seems normal as usual for the breeding Northern Gannets of Cape St. Mary's but as you look closely the light reviles a more tragic story.

This adult Northern Gannet continues to prune its deceased fledgling.

It appears our Gannets are once again struggling during the breeding season. Research has begun to try and solve this mystery. They feel it may not be related to rising temperatures in the water but it is obvious their is a lack of food.

As a Wildlife Photographer I often aim to capture beautiful images of nature in all its glory showing healthy animals in their natural habitat...but their is another side of nature we often turn a blind eye to...I wanted to show you this image in hopes to bring awareness to the issue and for you take a moment to read the efforts being made by the researchers to maybe finding the reason. We may never have a solution to help our Gannets but knowledge is power and the more we know and the more people that know, the greater chance our Gannets have at survival.

Took a mini vacation down to Starved Rock over Spring break. Didn't get many pictures...my son was behind his camera! That's cool with me! This was taken in Lasalle Canyon.

The Room Of My Life - Poem by Anne Sexton

Here,

in the room of my life

the objects keep changing.

Ashtrays to cry into,

the suffering brother of the wood walls,

the forty-eight keys of the typewriter

each an eyeball that is never shut,

the books, each a contestant in a beauty contest,

the black chair, a dog coffin made of Naugahyde,

the sockets on the wall

waiting like a cave of bees,

the gold rug

a conversation of heels and toes,

the fireplace

a knife waiting for someone to pick it up,

the sofa, exhausted with the exertion of a whore,

the phone

two flowers taking root in its crotch,

the doors

opening and closing like sea clams,

the lights

poking at me,

lighting up both the soil and the laugh.

The windows,

the starving windows

that drive the trees like nails into my heart.

Each day I feed the world out there

although birds explode

right and left.

I feed the world in here too,

offering the desk puppy biscuits.

However, nothing is just what it seems to be.

My objects dream and wear new costumes,

compelled to, it seems, by all the words in my hands

and the sea that bangs in my throat.

Some sly miniature neurological intruder has strung a net across my brain - between the part that has ideas and the part in charge of executing. Ideas spring up like sockeye, silver, lithe, shimmering, leaping - only to flop back stunned and stupid after hitting the net. Again.

What happens to ideas when they're stymied like that? Do they starve, die, rot, without ever having spawned? Or do they regroup, reconstitute themselves, and come back later with a more developed business plan?

I guess we'll see.

Another photo from Starved Rock. See what I mean about the orange colours? I love the gradient in the leaves that seems to be going on here.

I want to go back!!!

We are facing a new dark age here on Earth, we have to say it by its name, it's fascism again. Migrants and refugees don't travel thousands of miles just for business or pleasure, but for a better life, or in most of the times, just to survive. Closing ports and piers to groups of starving humans is inhuman. Putting migrants in jails and processing as felons is cruel, but what it doesn't have a name is to separate children from their parents, and putting them in cages. It is just the worst of the worst. The UN says this is torture. What happens next? Ask the historians or people who reads books and they will speak of the evil that originate the WW II and the Holocaust. The people on the government doesn't read books. We must be heard. This has to stop. No more inhuman acts, no more fascism! The president's wife says "I really don't care, do U? Well, we all care!!

"There's only love that's strong enough

to rescue us from self destruct

You don't think so, but we're all the same

that's just how it is

there's only one human race

many faces

everybody belongs here

there's only one human race

many faces

everybody belongs here

We're here to reconcile our hearts

We're born, so we die

our lives are all entwined

you see differences

All walls fall over time

we're here to reconcile our hearts"

While I was waiting at a traffic stop, I looked to my left and saw this old lady sitting on a bench waiting for the bus. The mural behind her made an interesting scene out of it. So I quickly grab my Canon Powershot and took this shot. I almost wanted to give her a lift. But I had to go the other direction. I really like thes old CCD cameras for street scenes like this. They make it look so organic.

We wait, starving for moments of high magic to inspire us, but life is a banquet of common enchantment waiting for our alchemist's eyes to notice. ~Jacob Norby ...

"All people are equal, but some people are more equal than others."--adapted from George Orwell, Animal Farm

This is the closeup of a sculpture entitled "Hunger March" by artist Jens Galschiotdisplayed and it was being displayed in the park along with 2 other as a series. The whole piece was actually 20 copper sculptures of starved children, and it appeared as a mobile manifestation in the protests during the WTO summit.

I think the facial expressions of starved children showed a lot of pride despite the injustice they're going through and all, so i zoomed in and took a few shots. This is the one i liked more. Hope y'all like it too. I'll submit a photo of the sculptures as a whole piece later.
