Startup Weekend -- Des Monines 2

Startup Weekend Des Moines is a community building startup event. Participants get together with local developers, marketers, designers, enthusiasts and start companies in just 54 hours.
The participants that attend a Startup Weekend decide what they want to tackle over the weekend and come out at the end with several developed companies or projects. Attendees are responsible for bringing the same desire and passion to the project and walk out of the room with the task at hand, in a short 54 hours. Sound intense? It is.
This year Spindustry Strategy hosted the event at their offices. Many thanks to Spindustry Strategy for providing space for the weekend and all the hard work by Shane Reiser for organizing the event.

It is a small device worn on shirt collars or as a pendant that records handsfree audio and pairs with an APP to notify pre-programmed emergency contacts discreetly when the wearer is in distress.

Teams of Knox College students present business plans to faculty, in advance of StartUp Term, an interdisciplinary course that simulates the experience of working in a high-tech small business incubator. More info: www.knox.edu/academics/immersion-experiences/startup-term
Concept: Creating high definition in the hand, connecting to the Poken, which represents the communication bridge between the web and people meeting in real life.
"Do I Poken?" Yes, yes I do. The Poken travels well with my PowerBook and is actually a nice device people can use in a scrwed-up-new-social-network-every-other-week Web 2.0 internet world to transfer contact information linked to Facebook, Flickr, Xing and any other in real life, instead of randomly looking people up in the vast sea of social-bookmarking-networking sites.
Lighting: Sunpak 383 in Alzo sotbox from above camera right, Lastolite TriLite reflector kit used to fill in shadows on camera left.
Processing: Pretty basic Photoshop work, sharpening, bringing out defintion of the shadows using a black+while layer and blended using luminosity, addition of curves, levels, and fine-tuning in Adobe Lightroom.

We headed back to Miami where we debuted our "Mixer and Startup Showcase." It was a great night filled with excitement and curiosity as people got to meet the startups that showcased. Those showcasing were Bloggin' Mamas, Flat Out of Heels, Kloset Karma App, Munchkin Fun, PRO simity, Waleteros and Wave Interactions.
