Chicago-based writers William M. Hough (1882–1962), Frank R. Adams (1883–1963), and composer Joseph E. Howard (1870–1961) practically defined musical comedy in Chicago in the early 1900s. Hough and Adams had met while students at the University of Chicago. Originally from New York, Howard toured in vaudeville before ending up in Chicago. They produced at least thirteen musicals between 1904 and 1910. By the 1910s, their style of musical seemed old fashioned, and they did not change with the times. Hough worked with other collaborators. Adams became a theatre manager and a screenwriter in the 1920s and '30s. Howard was later active in radio and television, reliving his glory days in 1900s Chicago.
