During my astrophotography trip to the Canary Islands the Tajinaste rojo were in full bloom.

Standing between these strange looking flowers in the barren volcanic landscape of the Las Cañadas caldera and seeing the starfilled sky unfold above me, evoked a feeling of being in a completely alien world. One of the spots that almost gave me goosebumps was this sloping hill, where the terrain nicely matches the angle of the rising Milky Way.

As a Swiss national I found it interesting to learn that the scientific name of the Tajinaste (Echium wildpretii), honours the 19th century Swiss botanist Hermann Josef Wildpret, who was head gardener of the famous botanical garden Jardin de Aclimatación de la Orotava (also called Botánico for short) near Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife.

There are not many castles that show the extravagance of the French Kings better than Château Chambord, but to me it still pales under the splendor of the starfilled sky.

During one of my trips to France this year, I had the pleasure to shoot one night with @benjaminbarakat at the famous Château Chambord in the Loire Valley.

The illumination of the castle is extinguished at 1 a.m. - something that should be considered for all illuminated landmarks to reduce light pollution and energy consumption and to allow visitors to witness these structures in a truely dark setting.

Unfortunately, the hotel next the castle was less considerate. Although they finally shut down the worst of their lights at 2 a.m. the complex stayed brightly lit all night.

In addition to the lights, we were fighting with clouds that night. They were moving pretty fast, but the Milky Way arch was never completely free of clouds. I captured two full sky panoramas and I was able to stitch the clear parts into a Milky Way arch.

For the reflection I also applied a new technique: For minimal displacement of the stars in the reflection, compared to those in the sky, I stopped the tracker after each sky panel and captured the foreground with the reflection, before I moved the camera to capture the next panel.

I just returned from a 3 week road trip through the US Southwest. That's the reason why I wasn't very active on social media lately.

It was mainly a family vacation and not an astrophotography trip. The bright moon kept me from doing astrophotography during the first two weeks, but it was nevertheless an awesome journey. I was able to show some of the stunning spots I visited during my previous astro travels to my wife and kids and I scouted a few new possible spots for the future. We did a lot of fun hikes and drove quite a few remote dirt roads.

During the third week, I was able to sneak away and capture some nightscapes. The images are, however, still sitting on my SD card and will have to wait a while for processing, as my work will already take me back to Los Angeles tomorrow.

To convey the feeling of a night under the starfilled desert sky, I publish the above image. I captured it in early February during a Los Angeles layover.

It was a warm clear late summer night, the Milky Way illuminated the Pacific Ocean next to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse. It was a calm night for the Pacific as light waves crashed below on the rocks and a warm inland breeze blew out over the Pacific Ocean. The Milky Way was nearly perpendicular to the horizon of the ocean matching the tall structure of California's tallest lighthouse. Although Pigeon Point is undergoing repair and the main Fresnel has been removed, the new 6 beam Coast Guard beacon made a nice stand in that illuminated the top of the lighthouse and threw out beams to the horizon.

Bulit in 1493, the Mountain Chapel is the oldest building of Arosa.

This image shows the chapel in front of the starfilled sky. The spotlights illuminating the chapel seem to be targeted at the constellation Leo and the planet Jupiter as well.

I took this image while walking home from an astrophotography session in the mountains. As the chapel is mainly lit to be seen from the village. The side facing the mountains was rather dark. So I lightpainted the tower with an LED panel. Neverthless, the forground needed exposure blending over 6 stops due to the huge dynamic range of the scene.

Half Dome, one of Yosemite National Park's most well known features, rises high in to a velvet blue star filled sky both reflecting in the Merced river that runs slowly through the nearly flat Yosemite Valley Floor. Theses giant cliffs were carved clean by the force of massive ice glaciers that flowed through Yosemite Valley during the last ice age. When the glaciers receded Yosemite Lake was formed by massive boulders that were dropped by the glacier forming a dam at the far end of Yosemite Valley. Over tens of thousands of years the Yosemite Lake slowly filled in with silt forming grassy meadows, some of which remain today. Over several thousand more years, most of the meadows slowly filled in with a lush green forest of pines, aspen and oak trees forming today's Yosemite Valley floor. This small corner of the Merced river harkens back to the views that must have occurred nightly on the fresh clean glacier lake that formed after the last glacier slowly receded.

The glaciers and the large lake are now gone but this place is in a constant state of change. The powers of nature slowly wearing away the granite cliffs as the hard rock is slowly pealed back layer by layer by the forces of water and ice. A small lake known as Mirror Lake just under the face of Half Dome used to serve as a great reflecting pond has begun to fill in and turn to Mirror Meadow. During the wet season the pond returns for a short time. Fortunately this reflection will last a bit longer but even it will eventually change.

Magically high clouds above Yosemite National Park cause large rings to form around the stars as the planet Jupiter rises above Yosemite Valley creating a alien view. At first glance you might mistake the large planet for the moon but no, it is Jupiter rising above Yosemite Valley as the moon serves to illuminate the granite cliffs of El Capitan and Bridal Veil. The unusual large size of Jupiter and surrounding stars due to the long exposure and ring created by high clouds made of ice crystals. The ring around the moon was massive and correctly indicated the next day’s storm. Waiting for the moon to get high enough in the sky to begin to light up the near side of El Capitan I had to out wait all but the most diehard photographers on a chilly night in Yosemite Valley.

Fell asleep on the couch the other night and woke up to a starfilled sky outside. Took my camera and went out on the porch to take some photos. Had no tripod so I hade to lean the camera to a pole and couldn't see through the viewfinder to set focus. Think it was okay anyway =)

We visited the jungle during the rainy season, however, we had a few very nice dry days while we were there. This is the view of the stars on the first night. Though the air is humid, there are no lights around for many miles.

I"ll never be a star 솔직히 말을 해줘

겨울이 오기전에

I"ll never be a star 또 다시 이렇게 스마일

시간이 가기전에 더이상 늦지않게

하지만 이것만 알아줘 누구보다도 항상 간절했다는 걸

때론 강한척했지만 이렇게도 괜찮아 나에게 위로해줘

Goodbye

I"ll never be a star 언제나 이렇게 스마일

I"m gonna be a starfilled night 누구보다 잘해 낼수 있다는 걸

때론 힘겨워하지만 이렇게도 한번만 나에게 위로해줘

그래 괜찮아 나에게 말해줘

Goodbye
