“They were perfect replicas of humanity!”
“Earth is a rising galactic power. Two older starfaring species, the Darruu and the Medlins, are ancient enemies, and both have concluded that their respective survivals will require enlisting Earth on their side of the conflict. To this end, both have dispatched agents (surgically altered to pass for humans) to infiltrate Earth and manipulate public opinion and politics. . .” [Wikipedia]
After receiving a synthetic body, Abner Harris of the Darruu comes to Earth. He discovers that the real villains are his own kind and he must decide which side to be on.
[Note: The novel was expanded from a novelette that first appeared in “Infinity Science Fiction” magazine in 1958, and later published as an Ace Double, along with William F. Temple’s “Battle on Venus.” It was reissued by Ace in 1973 as a stand-alone volume. A Tor paperback appeared in 1983.]
HOW SHARPER THAN A SERPENT'S TOOTH is an episode of the two season 1970's era Star Trek Animated series that could be said to more or less chronicle the final two years of the Starship Enterprise's famous five year mission.
Actually, I think the stories are of a good enough quality overall that they deserve to be considered 'canon', and years later there have been so many references to the animated series in the live action series and so on that I think the question has been rendered increasingly moot.
In the episode, Captain Kirk and his crew encountered an extremely powerful alien entity who (as is so often the case in Science Fiction) had visited Earth in the past and been worshipped as a God.
Kukulkan was a winged serpent, and indeed his starship echoed his physical form in appearance. You can see why the Maya (amongst other mesoamerican cultures) might have bowed down before him, but of course it was too much to expect our sophisticated starfaring explorers to bend the knee.
This cool unmasking of so-called deities was undoubtedly one of several reasons why I grew up to be a cheerful atheist.
In the words of 'Godbuster' Kirk, "What does God need with a Starship?"
Planet Robot Danguard Ace (Force Five) is Yamato's limited-edition release w/
striking metallic hues and made of die-cast alloy, ABS and PVC. Danguard Ace measures a majestic 25cm tall and can be transformed with interchangeable parts into the starfaring Sattellizer craft.
The RX-78 GP01-Fb Gundam Full Vernian "Zephyranthes" is from the 1991-1992 Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Star Dust Memory OVA Series. The Full Vernian GP01 was a tremendous improvement over its original form, almost doubled in acceleration and with a marked increase in maneuverability. It also featured an improved space-use version of its Core Fighter II, incorporating the mobile suit's large thruster- and vernier-laden backpack into its design.
The Neogi are an ancient starfaring race of spiderlike creatures. As the consummate merchants, they know that selling other people is quite valuable.
Awkward without its midmast, Starfare's Gem turned heavily toward the north, putting its stern to the water clogged with sand and foam which marked the passing of the One Tree. In the rigging, Giants labored and fumbled at their tasks, driven from line to line by the hoarse goad of Sevinhand's commands, even though Seadreamer lay dead on the deck below them.
- Stephen R. Donaldson, White Gold Wielder: The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Book Three
This is one of two winged men adorning a star chart meant to indicate to linguistically incompatible starfaring visitors exactly when the dam was built.
I like Eric Brown a lot and was looking forward to reading this as he's not published very much SF recently.
Sadly, while I more or less enjoyed it, it was rather pedestrian and much of it seemed like a travelogue. Following a terrible accident at a space gate, a young woman is stranded on a distant planet with no rescue expected. But, for all her troubles, she soon makes friends with some of the good locals, while fleeing the evil ex-starfaring bad locals. And she has an implant which translates everything and doles out handy advice!
Other human survivors are soon found although they seem bent on denying her key information they have which will assist them all greatly. But it all turns out well.
In fact, better than could be conceived at the beginning of the book! Fairly simplistic plot and an almost complete lack of conflict beyond 'goodies & baddies' except for the rather forced situation between her and the other two humans... She seems great at dealing with her initial seemingly hopeless situation (once she's decided against suicide!) and her subsequent adventures among the aliens but, once she's back in touch with other humans (who technically outrank her) she seems too trusting and unwilling to query obvious lies she's told by them.
Anychrome is a collection of light objects that serve to create an imaginary illusion of science fiction archeological finds from the time of two great world catastrophes in 3307. The archeological expedition was led by a renowned professor from the Moscow University Olga Kazakova, while the artist merely documented and restored the luminous archeological finds. In fifteen years, fifty square kilometers of the site have been explored, and many objects have been discovered to help us shed some light on the true image of that time. The Lighting Guerrilla festival is thus exhibiting the first part of the international exhibition of light objects created by a civilization from the Anychrome area as the project brings insight into the reality of life within starfaring hubs deep in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
