The Eagle Nebula Messier 16 ansd Star Cluster NGC 6611 in the constellation Serpens - by Mike O'Day ( 500px.com/mikeoday )..Whilst the star cluster ( NGC 6611 ) is visible with binoculars or a small telescope, the Eagle Nebula ( Messier 16, IC 4703 ) is best seen with a larger telescope or better yet in long exposure photographs. The Eagle and Swan Nebulas, M16 and M17 by Alan Dyer

The Eagle Nebula at top (aka M16) and the Swan Nebula (aka M17), straddling the Serpens-Sagittarius border. The star cluster below M17 is M18, while the small cluster above M16 is Trumpler 32. The Swan Nebula is also called the Omega or the Checkmark Nebula. The Eagle Nebula contains the dark towers called the Pillars of Creation made famous in the Hubble images.

This is a blend of a stack of 9 x 8-minutes at ISO 3200 through the Optolong L-eNhance dual-band nebula filter, with a stack of 6 x 5-minutes at ISO 800 with no filter, all through the SharpStar 94mm refractor at f/4.4 and with the Canon EOS Ra camera. I used the AstroHutech filter drawer/adapter to aid swapping out the filter. Autoguiding was with the MGEN3 stand-alone autoguider. All images stacked, aligned and blended with Photoshop.

I shot this set on June 14/15 on one short night a week before summer solstice from home at latitude 51° N, so the sky was never fully dark, making colour correction a challenge, resulting in a somewhat monochromatic look. In addition, the time to shoot was only 2 hours or so, limiting the number of sub-frames. Plus this field is low in the south from my latitude.

Also taken on a very warm +24° C night for my western Canadian location, all without darks or LENR thermal noise reduction, as a test, just with frame-to-frame dithering to reduce thermal speckling which was abundant on the filtered high-ISO shots. Stacking with a median stack mode eliminated most, though not all, of the speckling.

Messier 16, the Eagle Nebula in Serpens. The cluster embedded in the nebula is NGC 6611. The small open cluster above is Trumpler 32.

I shot this from home on a very clear night on July 31, 2019, using the Astro-Physics Traveler and Hotech f/6 field flattener for a stack of 5 x 8-minute exposures at ISO 800 with the now 10-year-old filter-modified Canon 5D Mark II.

It's nebulas, clusters, and starclouds, oh my!

This is a vertical panorama taking in the rich region of sky from the Messier 24 Starcloud at bottom in Sagittarius ... to the Eagle Nebula, M16, and fainter Sharpless 2- 54 nebula at top in Serpens.

The field straddles the Sagittarius-Serpens border which bisects the frame at centre.

Messier 24 is the large, bright and whiter starcloud at bottom, less yellowed by dust than the rest of the field. It is called the Small Sagittarius Starcloud, the large cloud being farther south around the galactic centre.

Below M24 is the round magenta nebula IC 1284, accompanied by a pair of blue reflection nebulas NGC 6589/90. Embedded in M24 are the dark nebulas B92 (lower and denser) and M93 (above) on the right edge, as well as the small bright star cluster NGC 6603 to the left of the dark nebulas.

The Swan or Omega Nebula, Messier 17, is at centre, with the star cluster M18 below it. At the right of M17 is the S-shaped nebula IC 4706. At lower right from M17 i the faint patch of red nebulosity Sharpless 2-44.

Above M17 is the Eagle or Starqueen Nebula, Messier 16 (aka NGC 6611, or IC 4703). Above it is the star cluster Trumpler 32.

At top is the large, diffuse and faint nebula Sharpless 2-54 accompanied by the small round nebula Simeis 3-123.

The region is rich in bright starfields contrasting with the dark lanes of dust that tint this area of sky yellow by absorbing the blue wavelengths of starlight.

The field of view is about 5º wide by 9.4º high.

Technical:

This is a mosaic or panorama of 4 segments, taken panning upwards by moving the scope by about 2º north (up) for each segment for ample overlap. Each segment is a stack of 6 to 8 x 5-minute exposures, all with the Askar SQA85 astrographic refractor at its native f/4.8, and with the astro-modified Canon R at ISO 800. However, no filters were employed here. All on the Astro-Physics AP400 mount autoguided with the MGEN3.

This was from home on July 31, 2025 with the field low in the south and southwest, and with the last segment area at top literally scraping into the treetops curtailing the last couple of frames. The fields were also rife with green airglow, being so low. But colour correction cleaned that up. In all, I am surprised how wll this turned out considering how low the field was and embedded in airglow. But the night was a fine one, clear and dry.

The original is 6,570 by 12,370 pixels. All stacked and stitched in Photoshop.
