This time I gave it a try with my 24-70 f/4 zoom. I was VERY surprised an f/4 lens could do this so well.

Antares is a red supergiant star in the constellation Scorpius, the scorpion. Antares represents the heart of the animal, perhaps due in part to its color. Two open star clusters appear to be nearby--if Antares is the center of a clock, a large cluster is seen at 2:30 and a smaller, closer cluster at 1:00.
Antares is both bright and conspicuously red or red/orange, and nearby gaseous clouds take on that color.
The bright star twice the distance of the large star cluster at 2:00 is Alniyat, which illuminates both blue and red clouds. Directly above Antares in this photo is 5-Oph, and it is embedded in a cloud that glows blue, near dense, cold clouds that do not glow and block light from stars behind them.
Antares is much larger than our sun. If Antares was at the center of our solar system, its outer perimeter would be between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter--that is, instead of being 93 million miles from the sun, we would be inside of Antares.
This cluster of stars and clouds can be seen all summer, just to the right of the Milky Way above the southern horizon.

Looking at the Stars From my front yard was able to photograph Venus passing by the most famous star cluster, the Pleiades in the constellation of Taurus. Use my 400mm telephoto wide open with a little more than half a second exposure, to minimize star trails. All on ISO 1.600. Was able to capture stars down to 9 magnitude.

Utilize un lente de 400mm y una exposición de un poco mas de medio segundo, para minimizar movimiento en la estrella. Con ISO 1,600 se capturaron estrellas hasta la magnitud 9).

Pentas lanceolata, commonly known as Egyptian Starcluster, is a species of flowering plant in the madder family, Rubiaceae that is native to much of Africa as well as Yemen. It is known for its wide use as a garden plant where it often accompanies butterfly gardens. Pentas is one of the best butterfly-attracting plants around. It blooms all summer long, even during the hottest weather, with large clusters of starry blooms that attract butterflies by the dozens as well as hummingbirds. It can be confused with some other Rubiaceaes such as lantanas and ixoras.

Travellers to The Frozen Planet have reported seeing a constellation in the night sky which is visible for just a few days during our month of December. It is called SC+8 because of its resemblance to Santa Claus + 8 reindeer. This is the first photo to reportedly show the constellation.

Pentas lanceolata, commonly known as Egyptian starcluster or star flower.
The color of the flowers range from red, pink, lilac and white. It is one of the best butterfly-attracting flowers. It is widely used as a garden plant, but photographed here in the wild. (on the comoros islands).
The Comoros islands have their own subspecies, Pentas lanceolata subsp. cymosa , but I am not sure about this one.

I captured this exposure just after sunset, when most of the stars had made an appearance in the sky. The Seven Sisters star cluster (the Pleiades) can be seen to the top left. I did some post production work to bring out the sunset colours and to enhance the stars.

The Pleiades is an open star cluster that can be seen with the naked eye. In the Messier catalogue it has the designation M45. They are part of our galaxy, the Milky Way. They got their name from the Pleiades of Greek mythology. (Wikipedia)

Spiral galaxy NGC 6946 and open star cluster NGC 6939 are situated within 1 degree of each other in the constellation Cepheus. While the galaxy is much larger than the cluster, it is also roughly 10,000 times farther away, making them appear about the same size in the sky. This image is a 2 panel mosaic intentionally composed to provide a panoramic perspective.

There was a waxing gibbous moon illuminating the mountains, and I wasn't using any kind of tracker with the camera. Just keeping the shutter open on a Nikon D5100 for 13 s at a time to see what I could get from the stars.

Things are quite hectic and stressful at the moment with lots of moving parts. Photography is definitely on a pause, but we are still trying to get as many walks in as we can to maintain balance.
