I was just listening back to some of my old Stanley Clarke records and it really is amazing what this guy did for an instrument that used to just be in the background. I looked at this shot and thought of what those hands have "seen" in music over the decades. I really liked it when I shot it, but listening to the great riff from School Days! made me dig it up and post it.
Dig that fro. Not on Stanley- the guitar player!

One of my favorite venues at the Detroit Jazz Festival is the Talk Tent. Distinguished guest are giving an opportunity to give an insiders' view of behind the scenes. Among other things, Clarke told of his stint with the Horace Silver Quintet early in his career. In his first concert with Silver they performed overseas. Clarke played his bass part as it had been written, but in the next concert Clarke decided to change the bass line to add his own touch. Clarke said that Horace Silver was not known to visit his sidemen's rooms on the road, but after the concert, Silver made a visit to Clarke's room. He said to Clarke "Today's Tuesday, if you haven't learned that bass line by Wednesday, by Thursday you'll be back in Philadelphia!"

One of the major acts during the first day of the The Hague Jazz Festival. The famous bass player and composer Stanley Clarke played with his band songs from the new album The Toys of Men (2007) to a packed audience.
Part of my shoot for the SMV project. From left Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller. Three bass legends in one place. I'm surprised hell didn't freeze over;)
