Resilience - L’arbre qui se plie sous la tourmente mais jamais se casse … Tree that bends under duress but never breaks …

The area around the Stanford Dish offers a popular 3.5 mile recreational trail, visited by an average of 1,500–1,800 people daily. The trail around the dish is known for its rolling hills and beautiful views, which on a clear day extend to San Jose, San Francisco, and the East Bay.

California has a big drought problem. 94% of the state is currently in drought status severe or higher (D2-D4). And it will get worse this summer. The snow pack level is at 6% of the normal average at this time of the year. Last week Governor Brown announced a mandatory water cut of 25%. Water use as seen in this photo will hopefully be a thing of the past.

Last night I showed Stanford University to our Honk Kong folks. I took my gear along just in case. It was full moon, but the moon was covered in a thin cloud layer. This created an unexpected and interesting pattern in the sky - by eyes you could not tell, the sky was too dark compared the the lights at the campus. The long exposure and HDR processing made for a nice contrast between the green foreground and red night sky.

One of the top 5 universities in the US

By 2021, Stanford students and alumni had won at least 296 Olympic medals including 150 gold and 79 silver medals.[19]

As of April 2021, 58 Nobel laureates, 29 Turing Award laureates,[note 1] and 8 Fields Medalists have been affiliated with Stanford as students, alumni, faculty, or staff.[40] In addition, Stanford is particularly noted for its entrepreneurship and is one of the most successful universities in attracting funding for start-ups.[41][42][43][44][45] Stanford alumni have founded numerous companies, which combined produce more than $2.7 trillion in annual revenue and have created 5.4 million jobs, roughly equivalent to the seventh largest economy in the world.[46][47][48] Stanford is the alma mater of U.S. President Herbert Hoover, the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 74 living billionaires, and 17 astronauts.[49] In academia, its alumni include the presidents and provosts of Yale, Harvard and Princeton. It is also one of the leading producers of Fulbright Scholars, Marshall Scholars, Gates Cambridge Scholars, Rhodes Scholars and members of the United States Congress.[50]

Stanford Memorial Church (also referred to informally as MemChu) is located on the Main Quad at the center of the Stanford University campus in Stanford, California, United States. It was built during the American Renaissance[2] by Jane Stanford as a memorial to her husband Leland. Designed by architect Charles A. Coolidge, a protégé of Henry Hobson Richardson, the church has been called "the University's architectural crown jewel".[3]

Designs for the church were submitted to Jane Stanford and the university trustees in 1898, and it was dedicated in 1903. The building is Romanesque in form and Byzantine in its details, inspired by churches in the region of Venice, especially, Ravenna. Its stained glass windows and extensive mosaics are based on religious paintings the Stanfords admired in Europe. The church has five pipe organs, which allow musicians to produce many styles of organ music. Stanford Memorial Church has withstood two major earthquakes, in 1906 and 1989, and was extensively renovated after each.

For this shot I was inspired by Stanley Kubrick, a film director, screenwriter and producer who loved the so called one-point perspective, where lines converge into the center of the screen. Kubrick used the one-point perspective in many of his films (video clip).

On Wednesday early morning I went to Stanford University to experience the rare celestial trifecta: A supermoon (14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual), a blood moon (lunar eclipse where the moon is in the shadow of the earth), and a blue moon (the second full moon in a month) at the same time.

The different in brightness on a partial lunar eclipse is very large, too big to capture the full dynamic range with a single exposure. I captured two exposures, one for the illuminated part, one for the red part. They were 4 stops apart. I combined them with HDR processing. The resulting image looks balanced, actually almost too balanced. What do you think?

The 600mm long Tamron lens on a A6000 crop sensor camera becomes 900mm, which makes the moon appear to be very close.

The Stanford Powwow is took place on Stanford University's campus last weekend. This Native American gathering is organized by and for Indigenous peoples, and is open to the public. Indigenous peoples from throughout the United States and Canada assemble for this event. Various tribal groups form a large circle surrounding the performance area. Tribal members take turns drumming and chanting, while dancers wearing traditional regalia perform within the arena. The performances are evaluated by elders in a spirit of friendly competition. You can feel the energy, attending a powwow is truly an inspiring experience! I made some new friends. Here I captured Brian wearing his regalia, backlit by floodlights in the back.

A big powwow was happening at Stanford University last weekend. American Indians gathered from all over the USA and Canada. Groups of many different tribes were arranged in a big circle. The tribes drummed and chanted, one group after another, while dancers in traditional dress danced in the center of the circle. We mingled with a tribe from near Sacramento. This young dancer is from Canada. He said that he is going to many powwows during the whole summer. I think it is a good thing to be proud of one's heritage.

Two years ago our son gave us a tour of the Mechanical Engineering School at the Stanford University in California. He explains the shock tube, which is an impulse reactor that generates shock waves to near-instantaneously heat a test gas. Shock tube experiments drive new discoveries in chemical kinetics, fuel design, clean energy, hypersonics, and spectroscopy. They operate across a wide range of temperature (500 - 10,000+ K) and pressures (0.01 - 1000+ atm).
