The vein of Pakistan

Shounter Valley - Azad Kashmir, Pakistan

This was my bedroom on the Young Beauty Star houseboat.

I stayed on this houseboat -- The Young Beauty Star.

This is the living room on the Young Beauty Star houseboat. It's hard to see on this photo, but the couch armrests were carved in the shape of cobras.

Old man rowing a shikara taxi across Dal Lake.

The dining room on the Young Beauty Star houseboat.

A sign at a shop on Dal Lake: "Do not convert heaven into hell. Stop polluting Dal Lake. Save Dal Lake. Save Kashmir." Like so many bodies of water around the world, Dal Lake's plant and animal life is being threatened by pollution (especially plastic bottles and bags).

Women rowing down one of Srinagar's canals that connect the old city with Dal Lake.

A line of houseboats lit up at night on Dal Lake, with the Hari Parbat Fort in the background (which is currently occupied by the Indian army).

The veranda on the Young Beauty Star houseboat at night. There is some amazing woodwork that goes into the houseboats on Dal Lake.

Nishat Bagh is another one of the Mughal gardens in Srinagar.

Every morning men gather at one particular place on Dal Lake to buy and sell their produce.

Despite the situation in Kashmir, life must go on.

Gulmarg is a ski resort about an hour away from Srinagar. A gondola runs up the mountainside in two phases. Unfortunately, I made it up the first stage only to find that the second stage was undergoing repairs.

Srinagar is a city with several gardens, most of which were built by Mughal rulers in the 17th century. This garden was built by one of the Mughal emperors for his wife.

There is a run down golf course in the meadow at Gulmarg. However, it doesn't look like anyone has played golf here in a very long time. According to a guy I asked, it was shut down for repairs in 2005 and will reopen in 2015 (sounds like an awfully long time to "fix" a golf course). Curiously enough, there is a Catholic Church in the middle of the golf church.

The Indian vice president was in Srinagar for two of the days I was there. Also, there was a strike one day and a bomb at a vegetable market on the outskirts of town (according to my driver to the airport). There were Indian army guys everywhere throughout the city, including on top of some of the houseboats.

The city of Srinagar is built around Dal Lake, which is famous for its houseboats and shikaras (gondola-like taxi boats).

You can go inside St. Mary's Catholic Church (located in the middle of the Gulmarg golf course), but I don't think masses are held here anymore.

The floating market can get quite crowded as buyers and sellers push their boats through to get to the buyer/seller they want to deal with.

Another man at the floating vegetable market on Dal Lake.

This vegetable seller was having a hard time navigating his boat towards a potential customer.

I'm not sure if this guy was already finished selling his goods, or if he couldn't find what he was looking for.

This photo of Dal Lake was taken from the roof of the houseboat where I was staying.

Washington DC, The US Capitol, July 24 2024.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the US Congress today at the invitation of Republican Speaker Mike Johnson. Well over a hundred Democratic Congresspersons refused to attend in protest of Netanyahu's brutal collective punishment of the people of Gaza in retaliantion for Hamas's muderious rampage in Israel on October 7 2023, Hamas killed around 1,175 Israelis and other foreign nationals. The official death count of Gazans is now almost 40,000 although foreign health organizations believe the total is much greater, Speaker Johnson threatend arrest of any person who interupted Netanyahu's speech,

Outside of the locked down Capitol tens of thousands

marched in protest. According to AP News some protesters tried to breach the police lines, commited "vilolent acts" and were arrested, AP also reported that the police used pepper spray to repel some protesters who refunsed to clear an intersection. I observed a number of protesters needlessly haranguing cops on the other side of the barrier, It always saddens me to see such uncivil behavior at a peace march.
