Ode to Robin Williams and the Holy City Zoo.

What a sad week. Back in 1981-82, I was a soldier stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco. My favorite past time, which I did at least 3 times a week, was the 10 minute hike down to Geary Street, and catching the East bound bus down about a mile and planting myself firmly on the seat of a dinky little bar (seating capacity 78) known as the Holy City Zoo. The Holy City Zoo was ground zero of the San Francisco stand-up comedy scene, 7 nights/week. This is where Robin Williams and many others cut their teeth and later became international icons. The juxtaposition between Army life and high quality stand-up comedy must of had something to do with my weird outlook.

The list of Holy City Zoo alumni is impressive. In addition to Williams, the alumni who honed their craft there includes: Steven Pearl, Doctor Gonzo, Paula Poundstone, Will Durst, Dana Carvy, Billy Jaye, Barry Sobel, Larry "Bubbles" Brown, and many others.

On the weekends, the line waiting to get a seat was long. Often more people were outside in line than inside enjoying the gags. One night Robin Williams appeared walking down Clement Street and burst into an impromptu performance on the street. He was already well established as "Mork from Ork" by 1981, yet he would still appear at the Zoo at the drop of a dime. My friend's girlfriend pretended to faint upon seeing Williams, exclaiming: "Ahhhhh.....Robin Williams!" Robin retorted: "Nooooooo, no, no, no. No more Grand Juries! I just appeared before a Grand Jury investigating that nasty John Belushi affair! I just can't take that again!"

The Holy City Zoo is long gone, I passed by the building yesterday, now know as the "Side Bar". There were a few flowers and as a very understated memorial to the comic greatness that passed through those doors. Thanks for the memories, and making my youth enjoyable while figuring out "who I was" while finishing up my term of service in the Army.

I don't think he dropped in unannounced at The Knitting Factory with plans to do a full hour of material, but the vibe was good & the other comics on the lineup graciously stepped into the audience to watch.

He looks happy.

In my standup comedy I joke, after telling the story that in Facebook someone wrote me and proposed to become my Toy-boy. "What? Toy Boy? An expression I never heard about yet. Anyway, I do not like "boys". I like men. As for toys, I have in my drawer." then I add to it... topping.

"The most important toy, always at arm length near my bed, because SIZE is important! Well not always, but sometimes it is." That most important toy, is my dear Kindle! I can see characters in big size on it!

and so on goes, telling the audience, how after my cataract operation I could not use eyeglasses and Kindle let me read for 9 month! After I did get new eyeglasses, I used it to put "50 shades of grey" (and hide it from my grand children's eyes)...

In keeping with the relaxed and leisurely spirit of ‘Island Time,’ you need to use this occasion to stop and think about the many times you and your lovely lady have visited this alley they call The LINQ Promenade. And by the way, The LINQ Promenade is definitely An Alley Very Much Up Your Alley! 🌞😅😁

Think about the first year you and your very lovely lady visited the LINQ Promenade. Was it 2013, 2014, or did y'all wait until 2015 to make your first LINQ Pilgrimage? Were you two influenced by the patio bar expansion at Margaritaville? Did you two come here to ride America’s tallest Observation Ferris Wheel? The High Roller stands at 550 feet high!! 😧 Or did y'all come here mostly to lay claim to the best people-watching patio table at your choice cafe or bar? Did you two come here to sample world-class gourmet cupcakes? How well did y'all like the Tilted Kilt Pub? Did y'all go bowling at Broadway Bowl? Did you two go to the Comedy Club? Did you two go to the Yard House just to sample their rooftop patio dining and people-watching? Did you two go to CHAYO to dance Salsa, Mambo, and Merengue on Latin Nights up on the big airy rooftop patio bar!! Which restaurant did you patronize the most -- because there are more than two dozen major eateries and bars along the entire length of the LINQ Promenade! Did you two stand in long lines to get good food from IN-'N-OUT Burger? Did you two indulge in Frozen Baileys at O'Sheas Irish Pub!! ☺️😅😊

Did you and your very lovely lady do selfies at the central square water fountain! 🌹😎

Do Tell! 😈

I was at a loss as to what to post here today and then I remembered Tracy. She's from my hometown up in Canada and she's made quite a name for herself in stand-up comedy. She was in Albuquerque a few years back but unfortunately, I was sick with the flu/allergies and didn't want to share my germs with her or anyone for that matter. It's always great to see someone from your hometown do well.
