A standout among the surviving drawings for the vault of the Stanza della Segnatura is this dazzling pen-and-ink sketch for the allegorical figure of Theology, which pulsates with movement. Raphael conjured the animation of the woman's pose through her fluttering draperies, the slight turn of her head, and the vigorous gestures of her open arms. Quick, circular strokes of the pen produce repeated reinforcement outlines and lead the viewer's eye from her shoulders down to the book on her lap. In the final fresco, Theology sits upright, assuming a more august, frontal pose on the clouds with her book closed and its spine on her knee.
