This was a standout page innmy sketchbooks throughout this project. it was the start of realizing the aesthetic of the works. These pages are my notes for initial design and where elements came from. The idea of disorientation and place being changed through memory meant that I was linking this place in thought to other places I had been to. Therefore the stairs were introduced from a site much closer to home. The idea was they would fade in and out of the final artefact.
Liminality developed over several months from its conception in small sketches and first stage of existence through to its final colour overlays. The idea behind the stencils came from this disorientation you can feel in a vast landscape and how your memories of such landscapes can be distorted through repeated memory and subsequently altered. I found that images in my mind of this place (the same that featured in the Masts of Cleeve Common) and others began to muddle and what I could and couldn’t remember became obscured. There are also continued ideas of a presence within the landscape other than our own, of something that we are distances from. During the making of this plate I watched a BFI film called Arcadia that gave me the same feeling of disorientation, bewilderment and at some points a fear of the autonomous nature of land and how our lives sit alongside it, that I had begun feeling in this landscape. This is when I brought in colours and peculiar stencils that altered what you could see of the landscape.
A beautiful Shooting star plant ( new addition a few weeks ago) with the native pretty crested iris - spring is magical!
