these cds all remind me of my parents, RIP

my paternal grandfather was a jazz musician, and so there was always great music floating around the family gatherings. I've had a really hard time listening to these albums since my mom died.

Stan Getz made a rare appearance at the Left Bank Jazz Society concert at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore, Maryland. This may have been the only time I ever saw Stan Getz.

Serenity - Stan Getz Quartet - Recorded live at the Cafe Montmartre, Copenhagen, Denmark on July 6, 1987 ( 4 years before his death).

Stan Getz was one of the greatest tenor sax player in jazz history. His smooth, cool, fluid and melodic style is, for me, one of the epitome of cool sax =)

Musical background : Hidden Orchestra "Strange"

Connections = Stan Getz + J. Hendrix for the blues mood...

The Chief of the Vilage in Arziv, Israel, Bernard, was Jewish and played jazz on the straight saxophone. He met Stan Getz, also Jewish, in Israel in about 1960. They were friends and played together in concerts on occasion.

The time I met Stan Getz, he had just finished swimming in the Mediterranean. He had no towel and he was soaking wet when he came to my office asking for "Bernie." I showed him to Bernard's lodging. That was the only time I spoke to him.

Among other appearances in Israel, he gave a concert on the beach at Arzim. It was incredible! He had such great tone on the sax.

I sat in the sand near his wife and her girlfriend. I eavesdropped on her conversation and found out that the reason he drank so much was because he had sometimes crippling stage fright.

One of Stan's sons was in this band. In my memory, he played keyboard, but the photographic evidence does not support that. I think now he was the bass player.

Stan Getz/Astrud Gilberto (1964)

Getz / Gilberto - Japanese kami sleeve = little paper album cover CD, gold CD; also available as an SA-CD; 1964

Stanley Getz was an American jazz saxophone player. Getz was known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone, his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band, Getz is described by critic Scott Yanow as "One of the all-time great tenor saxophonists." Getz went on to perform in bebop, cool jazz and third stream, but is perhaps best known for popularizing the bossa nova, as in the worldwide hit single "The Girl from Ipanema" (1964).

These scans come from my rather large magazine collection. Instead of filling my house with old moldy magazines, I scanned them (in most cases, photographed them) and filled a storage area with moldy magazines. Now they reside on an external harddrive. I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history.
