The major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, marking one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War. Created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, 888,246 ceramic poppies will progressively fill the Tower's famous moat over the summer. Each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war.

The poppies encircled the iconic landmark, creating not only a spectacular display visible from all around the Tower but also a location for personal reflection. The scale of the installation intended to reflect the magnitude of such an important centenary creating a powerful visual commemoration.

Today Mum and I went 'uptown' to Borough Market and also to see the last of the poppies being planted at the Tower of London.

I have visited a couple of times over the past few months but today it looked amazing. 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' created by artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper comprises of 888,246 ceramic poppies and this is one of the most impressive views facing the Thames.

Tower of London Remembers.

To mark the centenary anniversary of the First World War the Tower of London is creating an evolving art installation "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red". Formed of 888,246 ceramic poppies by artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war. The installation was officially unveiled on 5 August 2014, one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War and will be in place until 11 November 2014.

On 24 August I helped to build a just a little more of the installation by constructing and planting a batch of poppies. I believe it is now (as in these photos) about a quarter completed. Each poppy is a life lost - when it is completed maybe it will help to demonstrate the scale of those numbers which we really cannot imagine.

I met Charles and Ginger in one of the art galleries above Proctors Theater in Schenectady, NY.

I noticed Charles hat, which said “Take Our Picture 5¢.” I was fresh out of change, and my daughter didn’t have any nickles, so I borrowed a dime from her. Then I went and offered it to Charles, asking if I could take two.

It turns out they have started a project where THEY pay people 5¢ to take photos of THEM, with their camera. They found that in their travels they wind up with photos of each other, but weren’t getting shots of them together. And this is their ingenious and fun solution. (I love it!)

I took some pix of them with both our cameras. Finding out along the way that Ginger does pipe cleaner sculptures (cool stuff, which I saw a few months back at the Albany Center Gallery) and works at the Tang Gallery, up at Skidmore College. And that Charles is a stage designer. I had a blast photographing and talking with them, what a wonderful couple!
