The Pathfinder Shuttle Stack at the U.S Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL, is the only full shuttle stack in the world.

Pathfinder served as a non-flight test vehicle and is currently undergoing restoration.

The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated from 1981 to 2011 by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of the Space Shuttle program. Its official program name was Space Transportation System (STS), taken from a 1969 plan for a system of reusable spacecraft where it was the only item funded for development.

The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981, leading to operational flights beginning in 1982. Five complete Space Shuttle orbiter vehicles were built and flown on a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011, launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Operational missions launched numerous satellites, interplanetary probes, and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), conducted science experiments in orbit, participated in the Shuttle-Mir program with Russia, and participated in construction and servicing of the International Space Station (ISS).

Our Daily Challenge - Mar 4, 2012 - "Stacks"

This was fun!

I was pretty much at a loss until late afternoon when I decided to see if I could pick up some pale/pastel fabric at the fabric store, as I tend to prefer the darker tones and that's pretty much all I have save white and pink (for Valentine's day.)

While I was there, I found this lovely blue&white check fleece (love fleece - it hangs nicely, doesn't cause glare, and tents to resist wrinkling.)

Anyway, with fabric in hand, I started thinking I'd go with an "It's a Boy!" baby theme. Alas, on returning home, I realized son's baby stuff is in a box or two (or ten) and not at all accessible.

So I rummaged through the puppy bin (Yes, I have one. Yes, it is accessible. Stop laughing.) and came up with some pastel toys.

(Hint: rubber bands work wonders to hold woolie toys together when you want to stack them and have them stay stacked!)

For whatever reason, the boys got a kick out of this shoot, and a good time was had by all.

I really like the depth of field in this shot. I was using a rented 50mm f1.4 lens.

Stacking it was easy. Cutting into squares was a pain though :-)

Out Stack is little more than a rocky outcrop, and is uninhabited. It has been described as "the full stop at the end of Britain". Travellers would not encounter any further land masses between Out Stack and the North Pole if heading directly north.

Taken from Victory Field -- downtown Indianapolis.

Off to the far left, you can see a bit of Lucas Oil Stadium, the new home of the Indianapolis Colts. Yeah -- it's big.

This is among my first attempts to use layers in Gimp (Freeware PhotoShop Clone). I darkened the sky and then painted the structure so that it shows through unedited. I'm not particularly happy about the noise in the sky and I probably could have picked an easier subject to start layers. The detail around the smokestacks was a bit tedious. Thoughts?
