St. Louis Blues Take the Stanley Cup

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Hockey Season Is Here !!! St. Louis, Mo.

We went to the Nashville Predators game last night against the hated rival St Louis Blues. This date has been dubbed Hockey Day in America which marks the first day of Hockey Week Across America hosted by USA Hockey. This annual, nationwide event was created to engage the hockey community in both celebrating the sport at all levels and exposing hockey to new audiences. As a result, the rally towels shown here were given to all attendees vie their seat. I was able to find an empty section and snap this photograph before too many people filed in for a great hockey game...Go Preds!!

Technical Information (or Nerdy Stuff):

Camera - Nikon D7200 (handheld)

Lens – Nikkor 18-300mm Zoom

ISO – 800

Aperture – f/5.6

Exposure – 1/50 second

Focal Length – 18mm

The original RAW file was processed with Adobe Camera Raw and final adjustments were made with Photoshop CS6.

The Saint Louis Missouri USA local professional hockey team in the NHL is known as the Saint Louis Blues. The fans seem to express their loyalty in interesting ways.

Pre-game just before players take the rink with each teams logo projected onto the ice and the NHL logo on the new (and gigantic!) "Fangvision". Unusually for Smashville, there are still quite a few empty seats around the arena but each has a rally towel on it awaiting the fan on to come.

This wide angle shot is always one of my favorites to get at Bridgestone when the Predators play. It was taken with my newest lens, a Nikkor 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6 super wide. It's not my everyday, all the time lens but awesome to have when you have a chance at a shot like this...

Draw what you hear. This was the brilliant suggestion by Rob Walker in a blog extension of his timely book “The Art of Noticing” (robwalker.net/noticing/)

I just sat on that notion for a while then yesterday, when tuning in to a virtual concert by another New Orleans’ creative, Michael Ward-Bergeman, I was moved to do just that.

A terrific concert, pairing Michael Ward-Bergeman with his collaborator/trumpet player/friend Dominik Farinacci, on Dominik’s Song Book Watch Party. (Amazing folks coming up with amazing ways of keeping life thriving, not just surviving.) (www.dominickfarinacci.com/swp-events/2020/4/1/new-orleans...)

So this is what I drew. And it was terrific fun. Moved to explore it more. Line dancing. : ) This was drawn to their rendition of “St Louis Blues”. This also relishes in Rob Walker’s encouragement that we Make Bad Art.

That’s exactly what the St. Louis Blues had to do to win their first ever Stanley Cup last night. Inexperience or quite literally climbing from the bottom of the barrel didn’t stop them. A great story, one we should all believe in.

vs The St. Louis Blues in February of 1993 in the Winnipeg Arena. Bob Essensa makes a save here, but I believe the Jets went on to lose this game.

It's a good thing that these brand-new baggage cars are being used simply to provide extra axles for trains like the River Runner.

Regardless of my thoughts on the Blues, this is pretty cool to see. That being said, let's go, Hawks!

Eddie Johnson - Edward Joseph Johnston (born November 24, 1935) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender and former coach and general manager in the National Hockey League. His professional career spanned fifty-three years (twenty-two as a player and thirty-one in management), mostly in the NHL. He won two Stanley Cups as a player with the Boston Bruins in 1970 and 1972, and a third in 2009 as senior advisor for hockey operations with the Pittsburgh Penguins, an organization he worked in various capacities for twenty-five years. He was the last NHL goaltender to play every minute of every game in a season, in 1963–64.

Johnston grew up in an anglophone neighborhood in Montreal and was often called "E.J.", a nickname by which he is still known. He became interested in ice hockey as a youth and became a goaltender.

He began his NHL career in 1962 for the lowly (last place) Boston Bruins after several years starring in the WHL, EHL, QHL and EPHL. In 1963 he played all 70 games for the last place team. In 65-66, he split the goaltending duties with a young Bernie Parent. In 66-67 Cheevers came on the scene, but Johnston still played the bulk (with Parent). In 67-68 and 68-69 he backed up Cheevers. In the fall of '68, he took a slapshot to the head by teammate Bobby Orr in practice and was in a coma for 6 weeks. Then he came back 3 weeks after that and finished the season, going 11-4-2!

The next 3 years he shared the (#1) job with Cheevers. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 70 and 72. In the 1972 playoffs, Johnston shared the nets with Cheevers and actually had much better numbers: 6-1; 1.86 GAA, .936 sv%. He was the 3rd goalie chosen to represent Canada in 72 Summit Series, but only played exhibition games. Cheevers left the team for the WHA and so Johnston was the sole (#1) for one year before being traded to Toronto. Then to St. Louis, where he shared the net with Davidson, Belanger and then Staniowski. In 1977 St. Louis picked up Phil Myre and the 42 year-old Johnston was relegated to 3rd and was later traded to Chicago where he played 4 games before retiring. In the 80's and 90's he coached the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then managed.

Johnston played in 592 NHL games, going 236-256-78 with a 3.25 gaa, .896 sv% and 32 shutouts. His best year was 1970-71 where he went 30-6-2, 2.53 gaa, .914 sv%, 4 shutouts. (For comparison, that year Cheevers went 27-8-5, 2.73 gaa, .918 sv%, 3 shutouts.) In 2018, The Hockey News rated him the 87th best NHL goaltender.

Johnston and Cheevers goaltending duo is still considered one of the best in Bruins history.
