26 June is the 'dies natal is' (day of death) and thus the feast day of St Josemaría Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei.
At his Canonization in 2002, Pope St John Paul II said: "Ever since 7 August 1931 when, during the celebration of holy Mass, the words of Jesus echoed in his soul: "When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all to myself" (Jn 12,32), Josemaría Escrivá understood more clearly that the mission of the baptized consists in raising the Cross of Christ above all human reality and he felt burning within him the impassioned vocation to evangelize every human setting".
These words from Scripture are carved into the book held by the angel in this sculpture.
This statue of the saint is on the exterior of St Peter's Basilica and can be seen from the Vatican Gardens.
St Josemaria was the founder of Opus Dei and this relatively new statue of him stands in a niche in the external wall of St Peter's Basilica.
The Mass was held in the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, started at 7:00 p.m.
The chief celebrant was H.E. Joseph Cardinal Zen SDB, retired bishop of Hong Kong.
