In Paralimni you can find the largest church square in Cyprus with three churches in the center of the Town.

Two of the churches are dedicated to St. George and the other one to St. Anna which is the oldest one of the three.

День Святого Георгия - 23 апреля.

Порой мне кажется, что Собор создает вокруг себя, в этой невероятно красивой и в чем-то загадочной местности, атмосферу определенного состава воздуха.

This lighthouse always draws my eye. The clouds on this afternoon made a nice background.

As today is St George's Day, 23rd April, 2015, I've included an additional image taken in the mighty hills and valleys of Cumbria ... this is Kentmere Valley. If you follow the link below, you can listen to the most evocative piece of music that summons the spirit of England, I think .... Nothing somehow paints a picture of our hedgerows, the gentle pastures sloping and rising undramatically into the distance, the drizzly mists, the subtle browns, greens and reds of our autumn, the trickling of a brook or river, the forests melding quietly into the valleys and broad acres, and all the time, the seas that encompass these islands, and ... this England.

The Convent of Saint George was a Benedictine convent located in the Prague Castle in the Czech Republic. Founded in 973, the convent was next to the seat of ecclesiastical and state power in Bohemia and occasionally the entire Holy Roman Empire, and played an important historical role. Although no longer active, the convent's building and the attached Basilica dedicated to Saint George still exist; the building now houses the Czech National Gallery's collection of 19th century Bohemian art.

The brickwork beyond the end of the canopy is slightly lighter than the rest of the building following a partial collapse of the ticket hall area in 2021. Thankfully no-one was hurt, and the cause eventually put down to vegetation growth both on and around the building. The lighter brick represents the rebuild area, which was done in a style replicating the original building. The section of platform awning lost in the collapse, which extended to just short of the footbridge, was not replaced.

I've given this a bit of an arty tweak to add vibrancy and show off the Victorian architecture - which may not be everyone's cup of tea.

The beauty of this building remains while the mayhem of the Lime Street road works behind me continue.

St George in the East

Situated in Cannon Street Road, Whitechapel, London E1 0BH.

It was built between 1714 and 1729 with the funding from an Act of Parliament. It is one of the six London churches designed and built by famous architect Nicholas Hawksmoor.

The church was very expensive to build, at the cost of nearly £20k, it was designed to seat over 1,000 people.

In and around 1800, major work was done on the entrance steps. In 1820 a new vault was added, also the churchyard was drained. In 1829 the church was re-roofed. In 1871, box pews were removed in order to install new seating.

In 1880, 5 Venetian glass mosaics were installed in the apse, illustrating passion and resurrection scenes. The organ which was in poor state had to be rebuilt and between 1881-1886 this was completed by the firm Gray and Davidson.

In 1941 during the blitz the church received a direct hit from a bomb. The interior was destroyed by a severe fire that swept through the building. Fortunately the walls and towers survived intact. The mosaics were also saved but had to be restored.

A new interior was completed in 1964, designed by Arthur Bailey. The design, a much more simple plan.

Scenes from the film ‘The Long Good Friday’ were filmed in and around the churchyard.

Liverpool`s St Georges Hall. It doesn`t matter when it was built and who built it, it was built and that`s all that matters.

April 23rd is St George's Day (England's patron saint), so here is a photo of Castle Combe's High Street. It has been used as film location in Steven Spielberg's 'War Horse', and in other dramas.

I visited it on a lovely day in 2022.

Also known locally as Looe Island. Jesus Christ has supposedly visited, and Richard Branson allegedly tried to buy it for an exclusive retreat. Go figure....

Around 600AD, the Saxons called the village of Brockworth, near Gloucester, "Brocwurthin" – the "wurthin" (enclosure) by the "broc" (brook). St George's Church was built by the first resident Norman: Lord of the Manor, Roger de Chandos. In 1142 it was consecrated and became one of the earliest churches in England to be dedicated to St George. About 1846, the church was renovated at a cost of around £800.

This building has been on my list of things to shoot for a while. I was there in the middle of the day so needed to use my 15 stop filter to draw out the exposure, bring some movement into the sky and flatten the river. Whilst I had the shutter open one of the ferries came in to dock, but because it basically kept moving the only evidence is the light streak to the left.

After a couple of intensive weeks at work it was good to get out shooting again.
