Tree Trek...

Last week we packed up and headed for a local park, hiking deep into the woods.

I find that when I am surrounded by the wonderful quietness of the forest, I become acutely aware of the rustling of leaves and twigs as squirrels and other wildlife scurry about their day to day business. .

This photo is of a hiker who passes us on a wide trail in a part of the forest which is mostly tall pines and other fir tress, the forest floor is a bed of pine needles and other decaying debris. that feels soft and spongy beneath your feet while you hike through.

Every ten years or so, when conditions are just right, millions of Painted Ladies work their way northward from Mexico and the southern US to invade western Canada. On arrival in June, they mate, lay their eggs on thistle foliage and by mid-July they are just a memory. Five or six weeks later, however, nice fresh Painted Ladies like this one begin appearing again in large numbers.

Early morning, and the sky was beauitiful, so I took 3 exposures for a HDR effect. There are a lot of large-ish ponds still around, as a result of all the snow we got over winter. This was actually taken a week ago.

Thank you for visiting and your comments are always appreciated.

Steep Hillside...

Hiking through the woods of White Spruce Park is always a lot of fun. They have a game of Frisbee golf throughout the park and most of the time you are paying attention to what direction the next Frisbee will come from. If you aren't paying attention you could get hit in the head.

Even though it is precarious at times it is well worth the effort as it is a lovely area of trees and undergrowth; as these two images reveal.

VIA Rail's flagship Train #1 rolls up to Spruce Grove Alberta at 79 mph. The thermometer is buried at a balmy -25 Degrees Celsius, which is just an average February for residents of Northern Alberta.

Although CN has started to retire it's unique fleet of cowl body C40-8M's, a few can still be found in service. With chipping paint and well worn sides, CN 2438 still makes for an impressive sight climbing the hill at Spruce Grove with unit oil train U711.

Pink Bird House...

Yesterday we went to White Spruce Park, someone had hung little bird houses all through the spruce grove; they were all different colours, this pink one really stood out against the dark green leafy backdrop. and the bokeh from a bit of sunlight breaking through in the background really added to the overall aesthetic of the shot don't you think!.

Even though it is precarious at times it is well worth the effort as it is a lovely area of trees and undergrowth; as these two images reveal. most of the leaves in the park had already fallen; with the exception of this small patch that were sheltered from the wind and rain by the tall stand of white spruce. they glistened yellow and orange between the grey and silver spruce trees. gently swaying in the slight breeze that managed to make its way this deep into the woods.

A battle weary ex. BC Rail C40-8M leads westbound 217 up the hill at Mile 17.99 of CN's Edson Subdivision. With rumors flying around the sand house regarding the pending retirement of the cowls, this was totally a shoot em while you can moment for me. I'm still not convinced of any truth to said rumors, so until the cutting torch shows up I'll stay content to track down and shoot these unique units.

Recently I had an opportunity and privilege to help the The Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society with some photography they wanted done. It was a great opportunity to see the inside and outside of this beautifully maintained elevator. The Society and its members along with volunteers are doing awesome work to keep the elevator alive. Check them out and take a tour... Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society Grain Elevator

The Chini Khana or backdrop behind the waterfall was the most interesting feature of the water channel. The self-guiding pamphlet explained these niches are traditionally filled with candles, oil lamps or flowers. Attractive in steady light, one day, I'd like to see a garden using candle or oil lamps, there's something about the randomness of flickering light.

Empty unit grain train G834 heads east past the restored elevator at Spruce Grove Alberta. I've lived in this suburban city for close to ten years now, but the elevator is tricky to shoot due to all the clutter around!

When I was a child the highlight of any car ride was when we had to stop and wait for a train. The sounds and smells of the railroad were a big thrill for me, and to my parent's credit they spent the rest of their lives allowing my interest in trains to grow into what it is today. At three months old, my daughter has yet to take notice of events on the rails, although she does seem unfazed by the noise and the smells. I'll be doing my part and allowing her interests to grow, whatever they may be. So far, Freya has shown the same disinterest in the ES44 models as her dad has, so I guess some of the railfan gene has passed on!

We took to the trails for a winter walk, found ourselves in the white spruce stand again. This time a light snow had just fallen, the sky was extremely overcast and cast no shadows at all like a giant soft box what a perfect time to take photos.

Every now and then you really need to look up you never know what you will find..

More photos from my fall series.

The spruce grove was especially peaceful, silent, except for the wind whispering gently through the tree tops: the tall spruce trees swayed rhythmically yet ever so softly in the evening breeze. The days light was slowly dimming, soon it would be time to head home, leaving me just enough time to capture the moment.

It was a very hot day, but still cool in this spruce grove.

After waiting for eastbound trains U772 and Q112 to pass, unit potash train B759 finally gets the light to head west on the Edson Subdivision

The L519 local passes the preserved and mural adorned water tower at Spruce Grove Alberta. The survey stakes are in place, and crews are hard at work to the west of here grading the right of way for a second main track

With the double track expansion project between Spruce Grove and Carvel Alberta, CN has installed new "really friggin tall" signals. An eastbound lumber drag splits a pair of the signals at Spruce Grove

Back view of a WARNED thunderstorm that parked over SW Edmonton for a bit. As the anvil grew, a Boeing 737 flew adjacent to it. Amazing oppty to show sense of scale.

The Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society have done an excellent job of preserving the elevator at mile 19.9 of CN's Edson Subdivision. Due to foreground clutter and foliage near the ROW, it can be difficult to frame the structure in a shot with a passing train. On the evening of June 14 2018, I captured westbound M311 passing the preserved structure shortly after a rainstorm hit the area. This scene will change shortly, as CN crews are busy adding a second main that will connect to the right of the lead unit.

An eastbound freight with a single ES44 in charge passes a crop of canola on the Edson Sub.

Someone had taken a chainsaw to a large number of the spruce trees and left these cuttings laying around. so a few minutes of creative rearranging and viola a cool wood stack.

SD40-3 #5946 (sublettered for the Grand Trunk Western) roars through Spruce Grove with local freight 519

The Edmonton area hasn't seen a lot of snow so far this winter, but I'm sure there's some on the way! Q108 heads east towards the Capital City with some authentic British Columbia snow on board.

UP 5759 leads CN Train S211 west near Spruce Grove Alberta. Lately these loaded sand trains have been featuring a mix of leased and borrowed power, and today's S211 also featured a CEFX AC4400CW as the mid train remote. I had originally set up at a different canola field, however the shot I wanted was blocked by an eastbound intermodal on the south main, with S211 running on the north. A quick detour on a couple of grid roads got me to this spot, where the canola was also in great form.
