I was watching Springwatch this evening and got a feeling of deja vu when I saw the Snipe photo on the back of their cue cards, and on the screen at the back of Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan. I don't mind the BBC using my photograph but it would have been nice to have been credited.

I took the photograph in Upper Teesdale four years ago.

There was a lot of talk on Springwatch about "reintroducing" White Storks back to Britain, but the evidence for Storks being former resident breeders seems pretty flimsy. There is a single record of a pair supposedly nesting on St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh in 1416, but that record has been questioned, and if it was genuine, was a freak occurrence. Bones dating back c150,000 years were found in Devon. A few bones have also been found from Scotland from the Bronze Age, and from Southern England in Roman Times, but these may have been from overshooting Continental birds, which are more than annual in recent years. Since 2004 thee have been a handful of unsuccessful nesting attempts but these have all involved rehabilitated birds released from captivity.

I photographed this one searching for food in the flower-rich grasslands of Spain's Coto Donana, where large numbers do breed. This is a nice clean one with a vermilion bill though many get rather dirty during the breeding season. That purple haze in the grasslands is Purple Viper's Bugloss (Echium plantagineum).
