Celebrating the first day of spring on this #FrontierFriday with photos from last year's Springtime Roundup at Big Thunder Ranch.
Yesterday Springtime Darners (Basiaeschna janata) were emerging from the Potomac. The photo is of a larva that is climbing a tree to emerge. Many more species will soon follow. Lander Boat Launch, Potomac River, Maryland.

Jacaranda and the Illawarra Flame Tree in flower. Photo taken at Redbank Plains, Ipswich, Queensland. Taken with my Samsung Galaxy Phone camera.
Home Sweet Home Museum, East Hampton, NY. This bird's nest was situated at just about eye level in the wisteria.
A better photograph under natural light. At the moment I hand-craft all my chains for my necklaces. I like to be able to add colour and texture by wiring in stones to complement the focal.
I like the contrast between the very clear and sparkly lemon quartz and prasiolites and the opaque focal stones.
okay, it's not exactly springtime. Brisbane doesn't get any - it goes straight from winter to summer. But every October the jacarandas flower all over Brisbane.
These were taken using a Pentax 85mm f/2.2 Soft focus lens. It was designed to have a ton of under-corrected spherical aberration. As such, it's depth of field is extremely deep, even wide open (if you don't understand how this can be, ask and I'll try to explain, or point you to someone who has already said it well). I find if I focus close and let the back edge of what is in focus barely touch the subject, the background _finally_ drops away. Messing with the aperture, of course, adds another dimension of possibilities.
The real reason I wanted to write something in these comments/descriptions is that this Pentax lens came mounted with a Nikon F-mount bayonet. It's the only Pentax K-mount lens I've so far seen remounted this way. I don't know if Pentax made a series of Nikon F-mount (never heard of it before) or if this was just a very good job done in a shop somewhere.

Pattern adapted from the First Book of Modern Lace Knitting by Marianne Kinzel. The pattern is called Springtime and it's a tablecloth pattern.
Mods:
Work half the number of repeats.
Work flat instead of in the round
Start and end with 2 garter selvage stitches
Work only 2 repeats of the B chart
Finish with a crocheted picot bind off
All the yarn is handspun, 2ply sock weight, that I worked up on my spinning wheel. The orange fiber is a kool-aid dyed mix of angora, alpaca and soy. The red is a blend I bought of wool, sari silk and sparklies. I haven’t calculated the yardage I used yet.
